I'm not done, yet. I want as much creativity as possible and as many votes on demons as possible. I'll be checking on this post regularly and critiquing along the way. Thanks.:D

it seems like a succubus thing to do

By the way, my compliments of the campaign idea. It sure has a lot of fun potential

Glabrezu, because they're deviously fun when they've got their hooks into someone with power.

Or the Nabassu, because they're greatly underused.

If I'm not mistaken, Succubi and Glabrezu are the main "tempters" of the Abyss, the former uses seduction while the latter promises power. As such, probably one of these two would be a good choice, though against the likes of Gareth Dragonsbane (epic level paladin, if I'm not mistaken), that'll be a pretty tall order! You may consider a Marilith or even a Balor for the job.

I'm going by the 'Monster Manual' here, since I neither own nor have read 'Hordes of the Abyss'. :D

Realisticly, it would be cool if he was posessed by a Lilitu.

Don't forget the gem tree given to the king of Damara by Bahamut which stops all demon activity within the bloodstone lands.

Or there is a work around and due to the confidence Gareth has in the tree's power he doesn't realize there's a demon in his midst until it's far too late.

Or some such explanation.

Any demon that has the fiend of possession class (fiend folio) could be used for this. You could get away with a quasit or an imp ruling the lands. That class also allows you to make hide checks inorder to get past wards and detections.

I don't have the Hordes of the Abyss supplement but too me it seems unlikely that a lesser demons like the ones you mentioned would have the power to take control of someone as powerful as King Gareth.

If memory servers me correctly (at work away from my books) but he is well aware of what demons can do because of his fight against arguably the most powerful demon out there, Orcus.

Wouldn't it seem more feasable that another power of that caliber would be needed to subvert Gareth? Like Graz'zt or Demogorgon?

Perhaps one of these mighty Demon Prince's along with say a friend of Gareth's, like a fallen priest of Lathander (or whichever god is mostly revered in Damara, Again don't have my books) who is now working for said prince have secretly taken control of the good king.

Thats just it though, the fiend of posession class is so versatile a mediocre demon could posses King Gareth. It could hide and travel via servant. Until it is within the area of the king, then it could easily jump to him. just by coming in contact with him it can bestow curse on him dropping his wisdom by six or or his will save by four. Leaving an open minded king ready for posession.

Doesn't this seem a little overpowered? If it is that easy why not send an army of Imps with a level or two of Fiend of possesion into a town/land like Suzail/Cormyr and have them take it over?

Why would you need to? Go to Candlekeep. There's an entire Impiltur campaign that I put together storyblocked out somewhere. I'm still running it, but it's DANDY.

That and you do need the full 6 lvls of the class to posses and control creatures.
