Waterdeep and sewage removal [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-04-07, 11:19 PM I know that Waterdeep has a sewage system. What I don't know is how individual buildings get rid of it. Is it like ancient Rome or more "modern"? Or is it a mix of both?
Most people don't have a magical chamberpot, so do they have nonmagical flushing toilets and running water or are they stuck with chamber pots being emptied out of windows each morning? (think London and Rome)
Just curious if Ed has said anything about this....

05-09-07, 11:26 AM IIRC there are Ghaunadans thought to operate within Waterdeep--I'd imagine there's an extensive sewer system under the city, which might be where they lair (and a convenient way to get around).

Now that I am throughly grossed out and appalled I can't help but think that almost every large town and city in Faerun has a palpable stench exuding from it. (except for ones like Waterdeep that not only have an extensive sewer system but also constant ocean breezes to blow some of the smell away)

I wonder how large communities of elves handle the situation, considering they have been civilized much longer than the lesser races.

And for some reason I picture all Dwarves acting like Fat Batard when discussing their 'internals'. Must be the scottish accent; Warning, gross Austin Powers quote -

"First things first! Where's yer shitter? I got a turtle head poking out", "I'm not kiddin'; I got a crap on deck that could choke a donkey. Ooooh, it's squidgy! Ach, Christ, I'm gettin' all emotional from it."

I would imagine that most nobles could afford 'pantaloons' with portals built in, that lead to the Elemental Plane of raw Sewage...

The richest nobles may spend money to solve such a minor inconvenience through magic, but just as not all elves wear a ring of sustenance so they don't need to worry about eating (which conceniently solves waste disposal issues too), elf commoners have no more access to magic than most humans do.

Or in other words: There's a reason elven architecture builds things upward. :D

05-16-07, 10:53 AM I think a simple 4th or 5th level spell could create enough wind velocity in a confined space to create a suction.

As long as we're being realistic, then in this magic enabled engineering society there would be mages for hire to recast the spell every so often .. they would surely get extra mileage out of that 'extend spell' feat! :D

Once again, magic solves everything for the elves. Maybe all their waste is sent to the astral through portals or something.

Seriously, though, there was an image from my game that will live in infamy. Now, I run a living world, so when the PC did this, I actually had to check to see where every single PC active in the game who was in Waterdeep was. I had to run the event in multiple campaigns.

A player cast a fireball in the Waterdeep sewers in order to avoid being killed by an Oytyugh. Now, Otyughs live in large pools of...well...sewage.

For those of you who are unaware, methane is colorless, odorless, and highly flammable. Pockets of methane persist throughout sewers. So I roll the 25 percent chance at this point that there's going to be an explosion, and there is. 01.

So, I roll to see who gets caught in the explosion among the player characters. Some do. One paladin, standing on a sewer manhole, is brutally launched through a second floor window, where she arrives in the middle of a tryst between two people.

Chaos ensued. It was very funny.

So, off to my books I go. As a result of this, Eleasis (Sp) 8, 1367 is now Explosion Day!

a one way portal that opens just above the supreme throne at random intervals.

Good Idea, of corse I have a reputation for abusing Deanters of Endless water. Other purposes have been: With a spechaly crafted Nozel and a heat metal spell to make a wepon that sprayed supper heated steam over foes. As a Source of pressure for Hydralic devises (Waterpunk :cool: ) creation of soft ground to foil a cavalry charge in the battle the nect day, and using a guizer spray to destabalise a hillside and case a mudslide.

this may explain why the orcs, goblins and dwarves of certain regions are always in foul moods.

Perhaps if she were democratically elected.
But definitely a democratic city state where anyone with a noble title is automatically disqualified from running for office for any election or being "appointed" (i.e. buying) to a post of power.
