Some evil assassination plot (maybe even from evil monstrous beings) the heroes have to uncover could be interesting. Could be solved in a series of small adventures that are mixed between your other stuff. :)

If you can pull it off (and it's a pretty hard game to pull off) a mystery type adventure is great, be it trying to track down a thief who stole something important or a murder mystery or whatever.

Undermountain is always an easy cruch for a few adventures. I actually had the PC's enter through the Yawning Portal and they soon ran into another band of adventures who were in pretty rough shape. The party patched up the others and told them how to get out. They were thanked and rewarded, and the party continued their adventure. Little did they know, they had assisted a group of greater dopplegangers, who had defeated earlier adventurering party. Greater dopples can "save" more than one personality, so they exited the Yawning Portal as the "Party of the Blue Axe". When the real party exited a different way, they were surprised to find that the Party of the Blue Axe had lost favor with the city and several party members were accused of serious crimes, including murder.

One that I ran recently found the PC's entering the Catacombs of Yintros. A once potent magical academy now rendered to ruins, inhabited by many foul (oozy) critters and the big bad I used was an Arcane Ooze - the miniboss was a Summoning Ooze, the one suggested in Waterdeep: City of Splendors for 3.5. the Catacombs were great for the PC's and they had a real challenge with the dungeon - I am glad one of the PC's started investigating it, otherwise I may of never used it! Plus the potential prize that lays within - a spellbook could have any wizard PC drooling.

If you ever need adventure ideas read Volo's Guide to Waterdeep - if you have exhausted all the adventure possibilities in that volume than you play too much D+D. :D

It involves ignoring the canon "spell to keep Waterdeep plateau from collapsing", but I had an interesting scenario...

Basically, Halaster Blackcloak is taken into Ravenloft, removing most of Undermountain with them... but leaving a lot of the monsters. At the same time, a large earthquake* causes a good chunk of Waterdeep to slip into the vacant area that used to hold Undermountain, and monsters start boiling up.

My players went down to Waterdeep and were camped about a half-day away when the earthquake struck. Fighting your way through the violent streets, trying to get people out, or find things that people want. My players watched for several minutes while one troll fought several harpies.

*Look at where Waterdeep in relation to the mountains to the north, and the sword-blade like Sword Coast, including deep cliffs; it's got to be a seismically active area.

Dang Mark, you should move to my neck of the woods so I can join in on your games, sounds like you've got some skills.

I ran a campaign out of Waterdeep for a long time. PCs most did thief type stuff when in the city itself but often ventured out into the surrounding areas. There's a web enhancement with maps of the interesting stuff around the city itself.

That was the first time I ran the "Hobgoblin Imperium" storyline; I later moved it to Cormanthor.

I was planning to run an adventure in which the Waterdeep Mage's Guild had set up a portal to a small town in the silver marches which was in dire need of adventurers. It's a good plot device to get them out of the city for a session.

How about a Wererat infestation in the sewers. With all the gangs and thugs using them as spies and warriars to make them stronger. Eventually they get the disease... and Wallah! A perfectly good adventure.

The adventure I'm running right now involves the Plague Rats, who have stolen a major artifact of Selune. Retrieving it means adventuring into Undermountain...simple yet effective.
