I'm requesting pictures of what the people of Faerun might wear.
Elves, in particular.
I've got some artwork I've done, which I will be providing links to.
Feel free to discuss the "fashion of Faerun" and provide your own images.

Nice stuff, but I think the Eilistraee worshipper is overdressed. :P

(and she has child-bearing hips, not that I mind)

Intersted in any requests, I need someone who is good at Elves to do a new race for me?

As little as possible, if you have a high Cha.

Um.... I've honestly got no clue off the top of my head, as I know nothing about fashion. I couldn't even use the right words for the majority of stuff that would be culturally applicable. We know most of it's vaguely European (well, very European in most social ranks - due largely to similarities in environment, I'd guess).

I know this would actually be really good information to have in print. I think someone once mentioned wanting it in the "REAL Player's Guide to Faerun" that will never see print

Yes, she does have child-bearing hips. Funny thing is, thats the change-danced form of my male drow character, here (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Neyinssin-60467137). LOL. Sure, I do requests. Just drop me a message. :)

A dancer (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Dancer-of-Eilistraee-53289336) of Eilistraee. (warning... lack of clothing.) Here is my male drow character, Neyinssin (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Neyinssin-dancing-60528336), in such a dance (warning... once again... lack of clothing.)

A male Hanalian Goldheart (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Goldheart-of-Hanali-WIP-62752383) (one of my characters). Here (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Goldheart-of-Hanali-61447118) is another version.

An avatar of Kiaransalee (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Kiaransalee-54259112).

A draegloth (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Draegloth-54224677). This has next to nothing to do with the fashion of Faerun, but maybe it'd be fashionable for this priestess of Lolth (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Priestess-of-Lolth-52248727)? Hmm? ;)

An elven wizard (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Elven-Wizard-52249697). This one is old, and looking at it now I see lots of mistakes.
This elven wizard (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Elven-wizard-studying-65010739)is slightly better in my opinion.

A Starsinger (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Starsinger-of-Sehanine-62119891) of Sehanine Moonbow. Slightly anime-ish.

A lythari (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Lythari-Warrior-61567585)in elf form.

Thats all for now, folks. ;) I hope you like 'em.

Fashions and faces are excellent, and the bodies are good as well.

My only critique would be to the size of the extremities in a few pictures. I don't think GD minds the males with the big hands and feet though. ;)

If you can get the proportions down better, your stuff would be top-notch (way better then anything I could hope to do).

Hope you don't mind me saying that - I used to be a regular at an art site so I'm used to telling people how to improve their work, so please don't take it the wrong way.

I'll have to re-draw the 'being' I did with P&P, because my scanner sucks. I've never tried to draw freehand using PS before, so hopefully I can find the Tablet I bought three years ago and never used. If I find it, I'll post my pitiful version to give you an idea of what I need.

I appreciate you doing this - it's an illustration for the K-T thread. :D

EDIT: Now THATS an Eilistaee lover!

Oddly enough, i have a near irrational fear of disproportionate body parts. But they have to be REALLY disproportionate and twisted. Just "big hands" isn't scary, but long, gnarly, taloned hands would be. In particular, a mixture of too-big AND too-small things freaks me out the most.

Though that's not saying I dislike things being realistically large.

MT, you have photoshop and a tablet? I'm oh so jealous.... :P
I'm working now and saving my money for just those things. Then I'll be able to actually color my artwork and make it look decent. Until then, I'm stuck with pen, paper, and pencil.

And I'm currently working on a sun elf cleric/fighter/divine champion of Corellon, actually. ;)

um......ew! ;)!

Though, I think alot of FR characters wear surcoats, tabards, and many medieval clothing from that time period. Looking at sites like http://www.by-the-sword.com/ and http://www.museumreplicas.com/museumreplicas/ will give you ideas as to what many people of Faerun might wear. Though I'm not sure about elves, they tend to do things differently with fashion from the main populace of humans.

Too modern. Far too modern. Makes me think of the 60s.

That's all I've got.

I'd look around for medieval-renaissance recreation sites. They'll give you plenty of ideas. Just remember, some of the sorts of fabrics we have now (particularly anything really stretchy), just don't exist without modern manufacturing techniques.

Otherwise, your art shows a lot of promise, Darksong. :)

Well, here is my attempt at "dashing" sun elves.
A divine champion of Corellon (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Elven-Champion-of-Corellon-WIP-65127667). This is merely the body, without his armor. I'll be posting another version shortly with armor. Just practicing muscles here...

This is a sun elf (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Swordplay-65129188)who has just finished practicing sword play... Perhaps a knight in training? The dummy I threw in scares me. :P

And lastly, a moon elven mischief-maker (http://darksongknight.deviantart.com/art/Mischief-maker-of-Erevan-65130277) of Erevan Ilesere. This guy is rather cute, IMO.

alot fo the cultural illustrations in Races of Faerun are sound.

since alot of the lands are good approximations of Earth lands/eras, i'd shoot from the hip on that.

ie)
-calimshites wear burkas <sp> and burnooses, sandals, etc.
-dwarves are very pragmatic, so function over form; always consider weather/work before style etc.
-elves aren't quite the opposite given flair for asethetics, though w/ that Con penalty, you'd think they'd be mindful

Heya,

Well, its supposed to be a very form-fitting mithril chain shirt... XD

More detail is needed in the body of the mail. Mail, as you probably know, is made up of linked rings of metal. The way it was drawn it looked like a white dress, and her boots were exactly the same colour... I don't think they have mail boots - leather or leather and with metal plates might work.

Mail wouldn't be that form fitting over the hips, butt, and upper thighs, as the person wearing it needs to move. Plus making metal mail that tight would be next to impossible, and would chafe horribly (that's why you wear a layer of padding under the armour. This is mithril, so maybe you don't need as much padding, but you can't wear mail against your skin. It'd be like wearing a grater... and mithril with its fine links would be like a very fine grater - full torso abrasions anyone?).

She'd be wearing something else on her legs, probably leather. They definitely wouldn't be bare. ;)

If you want to see chain mail that looks sexy, I'd refer you to the DMG 3.5 entry for Elven Chainmail (one of my favorite DnD illos in the entire line).

Hmm... I was trying to keep with the Eilistraeen flavor, hehe, but I suppose it makes sense. Torso abrasions wouldn't be fun. ;) I'll also try making her boots look softer, they're supposed to be boots of elvenkind.

Ah, yes, I'm familiar with that one. It is very nice. Its just so darn hard to get the minuscule details of the chains in, especially with mithril. I'm studying up on patterns and such now. Hopefully I'll be better next time I draw chain mail.

Currently, I'm designing elven (mithril) full-plate. Any suggestions? :D

Much better than some of the well meant but less talented stuff I've seen from others.

Heya,

Currently, I'm designing elven (mithril) full-plate. Any suggestions? :D

Make sure all the vitals are covered (whether by plate or chain)... That includes, throat (there's a major artery and a major vein running up either side of the neck, deadly if pierced), chest (heart and lungs amongst other things), stomach (stomach, intestines amongst other things), groin, inner thighs (there's a major artery up near the groin, which will kill you in 6 seconds flat if cut/pierced!).

Full Plate is pretty much a tin can that you strap yourself into... No flesh should be showing when the person wearing it has their helm and gauntlets on. Those places where there's a need for flexibility, such as knees and elbows, should be covered with chain or leather or both.

Sorry, there's not really a way to make it sexy. ;)
ElberethSilverleaf

09-23-07, 03:09 AM
Of course there's no way to make full plate, even mithral sexy. The stupid idea of serious female fighters running around half-naked in chainmail bikinis has always made me want to vomit!
MarkusTay63

09-23-07, 02:07 PM
But if it isn't sexy, then it's not Realmsian. Open sexuality played a big part in Ed's Realms, after all.

You can make sexy full-plate - just give it some big shoulders and a half-top. Put gaurds on the forarms and legs, but leave them open in the back and at the top and bottom Make the 'skirt' piece solid but very short.

The armor that Alias wore (from the pic) was so ridiculous, that the author had to modify the story and give her a flimsy but powerful enchanted outfit. Magic makes it all work, and a trained warrior learns how to use her armor effectively, so that a piece will always intervene on every swing.

Just chalk it up to really good training. ;)

Heya,

But if it isn't sexy, then it's not Realmsian. Open sexuality played a big part in Ed's Realms, after all.

It is true, but most of the time when Ed portrays a warrior woman in his writing, she's fully armoured. (Having just finished reading Swords of Eveningstar, both Islif and Myrmeen spring to mind... The former wore a kind of splint mail, while the latter wore full battle leathers.)

You can make sexy full-plate - just give it some big shoulders and a half-top. Put gaurds on the forarms and legs, but leave them open in the back and at the top and bottom Make the 'skirt' piece solid but very short.

Sounds like rather uncomfortable half-plate to me, with plenty of vital areas still open for stabbing. If you're trying to go for realistic full plate, it should cover everything with plate or chain.

Yes, magic is quite effective at protection. I know, why not do away with the armour all together and just go nude? All you'd really need would be a set of beautifully crafted Bracers of Armour +10! :D :P (And if you really wanted to go all out, a Ring of Warmth, for when it's snowing!)

Just chalk it up to really good training. ;)

No amount of training can make up for holes over the vital areas. If skill really mattered, then all the fighter types would get bonuses to armour the higher they got in level.
GothicDan

09-23-07, 09:25 PM
Also note that one doesn't have to be heavily armored to be a good warrior, though. :)

It all depends on style.
ElberethSilverleaf

09-24-07, 05:02 AM
No you don't have to be heavily armored to be a good warrior, but you better have a good dexterity or all those little slashes & stabs will add up to major damage in a battle!
Suin Bahhar

09-24-07, 09:11 AM
Fighting styles will consider what areas are better protected & armored and use these in combination with positioning to absorb blows with the most readily available striking surfaces . The roman gladiators had piecemal armors wich for example protected only the swordarm, the shoulder and a part of the frontleg for a sideways combat stance. A large shield can replace a full plate on certain areas to make it piecemal like (and leave more skin to look sexy).
Naked warriors were quite common on battlefields of ancient earth.

I've totally played characters that are so vain that they WOULD do that (well, not a gown, but a male version), IF they provided just as much protection. ;)

It works really well for wizards/sorcerers, actually.

Heh. I think it'd be better (and more comfortable) to wear an enchanted gown, or some other sexy piece of clothing, than to wear magical, "sexy" armor that doesn't even cover the most vunerable parts of the body. I mean...what's the point?

If you're trying to go for realistic full plate, it should cover everything with plate or chain.Absolutely YOU are correct. I was a part-time member in the SCA and participated in historic recreations, so I'm well aware that an outfit as I described would be nearly useless in combat.

However, the Realms are a fantasy world, and seeing some skin, even on male outfits, fits the genre perfectly. True, a women in full-blown Machiavellian Plate would be well protected (and rather ornamental), but you would hardly be able to tell it was a female at all. :P

Right. Whenever I hear the old magical excuse trotted out (with regards to unprotective armor), my personal response is "Why not just wear a magical evening gown, then?"See above response. In a fantasy RPG, 'flavor' is a major component. ;)

That's a good question... However, I think the answer is quite subjective. It would depend on the individual in question.

Personally, I prefer my armour to look like armour... Which is why I quite like the picture of Elven Chainmail in the DMG - beautiful and functional. (And the woman wearing it isn't half bad either. ;))

That picture is my favorite in the DMG, and one of my top favs of Lockwood's art. It's almost perfection :D The only problems I can see is the shoulder guards look like they're solidly attached to the colar (with a pointy section appearing like it's going to pierce the neck) and that the elf would gouge her inner thighs if she lifted her legs due to the leaf style protective cover over the groin area. She also doesn't appear to be wearing sufficient padding underneath, which makes chainmail rather moot. Then again, it's elven chainmail and it looks greats :)

These are some generic sketches of my realms party members. My character was fond of cloaks and leathers with ornate paddings, the elven sorceress of acrobat attires, the elven priest of finely made tabbards or heavy chainmails. The party was pretty savage looking when emerging from the underdark (no bathing for like 2 weeks) and really had no time to buy clothing to "fit in" with the local Dalesmen. The later party had a more woodsy theme with a halfling with furred clothing and a bestial halforc covered in loose chainshirt and with tattoes of eyes on his face. When they were teleported to the south of fearun (Lapaliyya) they could show more skin and buy more colourfull clothing found in those areas.

Having spent the last year or two doing most of my roleplaying through the online medium of Neverwinter Nights based Forgotten Realms games, I've found this sort of topic to be a rather fascinating one that seems to get brushed over in many normal, less visually centered, gaming sessions.

Specifically, I've seen a lot of discussion about what constitutes 'appropriate' dress for the Realms, both in terms of design, as well as modesty and a sense of public decency. That chain-mail bikini may seem eye-catching, but is it going to get you the wrong kind of attention - i.e., that normally reserved for, as Ed puts it, 'highcoin lasses?' :D

As far as armor goes, everyone here seems to have hit on the salient points already. That is, many of the outfits in fantasy illustrations are designed purely for looks, and would not be effective in a real fight. This doesn't bother some people, of course - this is fantasy, and escapism, and they're not worried about the exact look of the outfit matching up perfectly to reality. Others want the proper look, just for aesthetic value, because they know it is what would be 'right.'

Now, is wearing something, even a fashion-piece, or a breastplate, better than nothing? Probably so. It's going to force your opponent to aim elsewhere to try and hit more precisely than might otherwise be necessary. Is it going to be as good as a full suit? Definitely not. Still, the notion of wearing just an armored shirt isn't uncommon, or just a breastplate, for that matter.

Does this mean that my Priestess of Eilistraee is going to wear full chainmail? No, she wears as little armor as possible (though does not fight naked) in effectively a chain shirt, covering most of the torso and thighs. Is it styled to look good? Yes. Is she relying on it primarily as armor? Not really. Of course, in the case of a character that wasn't intent on such appearances, she'd likely be garbed in as much as possible - such as that Evening Gown +10, albeit with appropriate slits up the side so as to accomodate proper mobility. :D

If one could find it, I'd suggest looking for "Historic Costume in Pictures" by Braun & Schneider, circa 1975. Covers stuff from before the 4th Century to the Late 19th Century, all done in black and white on plates, some 1450+ individual illustrations on 125 plates. Been invaluable to us really... no idea if you could find it as a PDF somewhere or not though... maybe a used vintage book store somewhere. Was part of the Dover Books costume collection... might try the Met in NYC if you can get to it, they were selling reprints of it a few years back when they opened some clothing exhibit thingy (quite) a few years back.

Personally I think dress all depends on where you are located in Faerun. You could be dressed in semi-ancient clothing for some areas. To Medieval in places like COrmyr, and even Colonial and Revolutionary War style for Lantan and other areas.
