| Azar_of_Faerun03-03-07, 09:37 PM | I've heard this term used in a good deal of movies, and read it over quite a few times in novels. Does it necessarily mean 'honorable" death, or can it be by a cheap shot/torture? Also, what are some good FR examples of "a warrior's death"? |
| BrennonGoldeye03-03-07, 09:53 PM | Simplified definition? A warrior's death is when a person commits themselves to a cause and willingly dies for that cause. They war for something. Could be for reasons good or evil, lawful or chaotic. :v: |
| MarkusTay6303-03-07, 10:04 PM | Good call, BGE. Its the same as the 'honorable' death without all the alignment crap thrown in. Example: If an Orc tribe raids a village and an Orc is killed during the raid by farmer with pitchfork #2, he has died a warrior's death. His actions, however, were far from honorable. |
| draco111903-04-07, 05:06 AM | Example of a warrior's death: Custer's Last Stand (even though the guy was a half-wit!) Example of a warrior denied a fitting death: Douglas MacArthur If you want a FR example of a "warrior's death," how about every dead member of the Knights of Silverymoon in the Battle of Keeper's Dale? Or Regweld Hapell? Or Uthegental Del'Armgo? You don't have to be a warrior or a good guy to die a warrior's death... |
| irishwerewolf503-04-07, 07:08 PM | Warriors death: Death found in the act of war when fighting for a cause the warrior deems important or necessary. (act of war meaning battle of any nature for the cause of this discussion) Examples of such things the warrior may deem necessary: Love, loyalty to king and country, honor, ect. And yes...it is completely possible for an evil individual to find a warriors death. Just because one individual (or group) finds someone to be evil doesnt necessarily make them so. Many "evil people thought that their actions were in the best interest of the world and its inhabitants. Their actions may turn out to be evil....but their dedication to a cause, no matter how evil, could still constitute a catalyst for a warriors death. Irish |
| Stigger03-04-07, 07:28 PM | Hmmm... I always just equated it with death in battle, any battle, being preferable to dying of old age, toothless and gray. |
| Lord Karsus03-04-07, 07:45 PM | Example: If an Orc tribe raids a village and an Orc is killed during the raid by farmer with pitchfork #2, he has died a warrior's death. His actions, however, were far from honorable. -I got him good, too. :D -Remember, every culture has a different idea of a warrior's death. Strapping a bomb to yourself and detonating in a cafe may be a warriors death in one culture, but certainly not in others... -As for some good warrior's deaths in the Realms...The Starym lad with the Elfblade, and Captain Starbrow Melruth fighting for Myth Drannor, and defending until they ran out of options are two prime examples, methinks. |
| Dark Wizard03-04-07, 08:19 PM | -As for some good warrior's deaths in the Realms...The Starym lad with the Elfblade, and Captain Starbrow Melruth fighting for Myth Drannor, and defending until they ran out of options are two prime examples, methinks. King Azoun |
| Lord Karsus03-04-07, 08:33 PM | King Azoun -Him too. Let's add Yamun Khahan too, while we're at it. :) |
| bitter thorn03-05-07, 12:09 AM | King Azoun ...and his daughter Tanalasta (sp?) |
| Empirate03-05-07, 03:56 AM | IMO, the warrior's death concept originates in Norse mythology: Every freeborn male was expected to die while fighting. It didn't matter if you were killed with many swordstrokes in heroic defense of your home fjord or because you, being drunk, fell off the boat wearing chainmail while attacking an English monastery full of defenseless monks. Either way, you were eligible to rise to Valhalla as one of the Einherjer - warriors knowing no death until the final battle of gods vs. giants. If you weren't "lucky" enough to die in a fight, you were usually condemned to die the "straw-death", meaning death on your bed, of old age or illness. This brought you to Hel, a place of no colors, no emotions, standstill, slow decay, forgottenness. |
| Lord Karsus03-05-07, 10:36 AM | It didn't matter if you were killed with many swordstrokes in heroic defense of your home fjord or because you, being drunk, fell off the boat wearing chainmail while attacking an English monastery full of defenseless monks. -Gotta love the Norse. :) -The concept of a warriors death originated long before the Norse were attacking English monasteries, however. I mean, monastaries imply Christianity, and there have been thousands of years of noted, civilizations before Christianity. |
| MarkusTay6303-05-07, 12:52 PM | On a side note, it doesn't neccessarily go the other way either. In other words, an honorable death isn't always a warrior's death - the Samurai often commtted Sepeku (ritual suicide) when facing failure, weather to an opponent or when losing face. It was honorable, but I don't think "fighting yourself" counts as a warriors death. ;) |
| GothicDan03-05-07, 03:25 PM | As pointed out, I personally think a warrior's death is death in battle, of any sort. But then again, I'm all about the Norse, so. |
| Dark Wizard03-05-07, 10:17 PM | On a side note, it doesn't neccessarily go the other way either. In other words, an honorable death isn't always a warrior's death - the Samurai often commtted Sepeku (ritual suicide) when facing failure, weather to an opponent or when losing face. Just a nitpick, I've heard it wasn't a frequent occurrence by any means. It was honorable, but I don't think "fighting yourself" counts as a warriors death. ;) Not unless he was your insane magical evil clone/doppelganger out to destroy you. "Mirror Match!" |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-06-07, 12:41 AM | Dieing in combat is all you need to qualify for a warrior’s death. Your all romanticizing it a bit to much |
| MarkusTay6303-06-07, 05:01 AM | WHO? Me?! :ahem: I said the Orc was killed by a farmer with a pitchfork! If you call that romanantic you got a strange sense of love my friend.... |
| Kid SixXx03-06-07, 06:53 AM | What is a warrior's death? Go see 300 this weekend and you'll see plenty of them. Any "Today is a good day to die" / "I'm wounded but I can hold them off! Go on without me!" scenario you can think of is pretty much a warrior's death. Most likely they happen when the odds are terribly against the warrior's in question (ie. the battle of Thermopolae, the last fight in The 13th Warrior, Boromir taking several arrows in the chest and STILL FIGHTING ON from LotR: Fellowship of the ring) or against an implaccable foe (ie. Beowulf / The Dragon, Obi-Wan / Vader). Also, what are some good FR examples of "a warrior's death"? Well, Bruenor jumping onto Shadowgloom's back while doused in flaming oil or Wulfgar collapsing the caverns of Mithril Hall on top of himself to thwart the Drow attack would be good examples... if either one of them had actually died during those actions. Silly Salvatore |
| Critalondel03-06-07, 07:10 AM | If you ask me, a warrior's death just means you go down swingin', regardless of the odds. Anyone that takes their wound to their front, facing their foe (instead of to the back, running away) has fallen like a warrior. |

Hey didn’t they print stats for Xerxes the Great in dragon a few years ago? |
| msatran03-06-07, 02:13 PM | Farmer 1: Dang, those orcs are in my tomatoes again! Farmer 2: You mean them tomatoes that was corrupted by that Shar Lady o' Night girl? Farmer 1: Yeah! Got one with a pitchfork last night! Farmer 2: Hmmm...you're sure you're not one a' them Shadow Weave Farmers? |

| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-06-07, 11:45 PM | Yeah the Chic that played Sarah Connor in the Terminator was in it. She is wicked old, but still hot in her own way! 300 rocks! |
| GothicDan03-06-07, 11:56 PM | I want to see it even less now. There should be more gayness. |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-07-07, 01:16 AM | That’s a crappy comment!  |
| MarkusTay6303-07-07, 01:23 AM | Girls? Aw. :(Don't worry Dan, there'll still be plenty of 'Spartacus' for YOU. :P Or in your case... Spartukus. ;) |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-07-07, 01:31 AM | Don't worry Dan, there'll still be plenty of 'Spartacus' for YOU. :P Or in your case... Spartukus. ;) Ewwwww:yuck: :rolleye2: |
| Stigger03-07-07, 06:37 AM | No need for the peanut gallery Mr. Homophobe... go back to your gnome and hin hating ways and content yourself with your virulent spelljammer bashing and just walk away from this one. :P ;) |
| Kid SixXx03-07-07, 07:33 AM | Watch out for all those girls in 300. :duel:  Oooooo. Women in those togas = teh win! |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-07-07, 04:16 PM | Gnomes are not real people anyways! Demihumans have no rights! The only good demihuman is a dead demihumn!:D :P |
| GothicDan03-07-07, 04:20 PM | Another thing that he hates? NEVAR! UNPOSSIBLE! That being said, my comment about wishing there was more gayness is no 'crappier' than you commenting on the appearance of a female. Newsflash: I'M A GAY MAN! I LIKE HOT WARRIOR GUYS IN LEATHER! MMMMMMMMMMM!!!! *Coughs, snickers.* Me, expecting to see homosexuality in a movie about Spartans? NEVAR! |
| Kid SixXx03-07-07, 05:00 PM | Another thing that he hates? NEVAR! UNPOSSIBLE! http://www.needlenose.com/i/fubar/vizzini.jpg INCONCEIVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| BrennonGoldeye03-07-07, 08:18 PM | Wow, he's wandering around in a fog isn't he.:thinks: |
| draco111903-07-07, 08:49 PM | Newsflash: I'M A GAY MAN! I LIKE HOT WARRIOR GUYS IN LEATHER! MMMMMMMMMMM!!!! Already knew that, and I figured you saw Troy just to see Brad Pitt as Achilles. That jumping neck-stab in his first fight scene was friggin' awesome! |
| GothicDan03-07-07, 09:21 PM | Ooohh yeeaah.. Achilles for the win. Unf. |
| BrennonGoldeye03-07-07, 09:49 PM | Hey Dan, let's get LLKN a cruise to Mikinos. Might give him a whole new perspective.;) |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-08-07, 12:47 AM | Hey Dan, let's get LLKN a cruise to Mikinos. Might give him a whole new perspective.;) :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :rolleye2: |
| Stigger03-08-07, 01:59 AM | C'mon, now you're just antagonizing poor LLKN... he's entitled to his opinion... Now if only we can get him to use more tact when expressing it... :P |
| Critalondel03-08-07, 02:12 AM | If a straight guy's allowed to comment about hot chicks, a gay guy's just as allowed to comment about hot guys. But if a gay guy's allowed to go "eww" about hot chick comments, a straight guy's allowed to do the same about hot guy comments. Tact, respect, blah blah blah, are all two way streets. |
| draco111903-08-07, 03:39 AM | But if a gay guy's allowed to go "eww" about hot chick comments, a straight guy's allowed to do the same about hot guy comments. Yeah, but it wasn't "eww." It was "aw." You know, as in disappointment? |
| Lord Karsus03-08-07, 09:15 AM | -So...How 'bout those warrior deaths, eh? |
| Isildrae Kyuss03-08-07, 11:16 AM | Warrior's Death = Suicide? In those old Japanese Samuri movies it was...kill oneself to save their family from disgrace. |
| Lord Karsus03-08-07, 06:08 PM | Warrior's Death = Suicide? In those old Japanese Samuri movies it was...kill oneself to save their family from disgrace. -That isn't exactly a warrior's death, in the Western sense. In the Western sense, which is what we're really talking about, a warrior who is felled by another warrior of equal or greater prowess is considered to have died a warrior's death. Seppuku, if applied to this concept, would not fit. |
| MarkusTay6303-08-07, 06:21 PM | Yes, that would fall under the category 'Honorable death', and the two are often the same but not always as we have already pointed out. Mel Gibson dying in Braveheart = Honorable death, but he was denied a warriors death. Poor Julius Ceasar had neither... just left to bleed on a cold stone floor.... :( |
| Lord_Lucien_Karsus_Necron03-09-07, 02:39 AM | yeah! death! much more death please! |
| GothicDan03-09-07, 01:05 PM | Lucy... Are you 15 or 50? |
| BrennonGoldeye03-09-07, 03:05 PM | ..snicker.. |
| Arbourean03-12-07, 01:18 AM | Wulfgar dying fighting the yochlol is an excellent example of a warrior's death. I've always felt that there's too much romanticism around Japanese suicide. They can make all the bushido excuses they want: in the end, it's killing yourself to escape a crappy situation. Most people have contempt for those who kill themselves, so why should we view those that choose to disembowel themselves as anything greater? |
| Stigger03-12-07, 01:27 AM | Depends on the person killing themselves... having known more than my share of them, and for the most part agreeing with their reasons... I see no problem with suicide on the whole. For some people, death is preferable to life. |
| Lord Karsus03-12-07, 10:00 AM | I've always felt that there's too much romanticism around Japanese suicide. | Azar_of_Faerun03-14-07, 02:16 AM | Hoo boy, this topic strayed off the path for a bit  Are there any famous notables of Myth Drannor that died a warrior's death? |
| boards03-14-07, 04:09 AM | I'd say pretty much anyone who fought during the fall had a warriors death. But good examples would be Flar Starbrow, and Josidiah Starym. |
| Lord Karsus03-14-07, 09:52 AM | Are there any famous notables of Myth Drannor that died a warrior's death? -I mentioned that at the beginning of the thread: -As for some good warrior's deaths in the Realms...The Starym lad with the Elfblade, and Captain Starbrow Melruth fighting for Myth Drannor, and defending until they ran out of options are two prime examples, methinks. -As boards mentioned though, pretty much anyone who died in combat defending the city died a warrior's death. |
| Mpinkard03-14-07, 06:52 PM | My favorite Warrior's Death is shown in the 13th Warrior, when they drive off the barbarians, Buliwyf sits dropping his sword(gifted from King Hrothgar) down as if atop a throne and dies(from poison). |
