That nasty area of magical instability caused by Mystra’s destruction at the hands of Helm seems to have disappeared from all 3rd edition material!?!? Who can tell me why? If there is information on the Helmlands please post it here. Exact location and any important features inside the area would be helpful. Castle Krag was present at the destruction of the Goddess and I’m sure it was leveled by the divine explosion. What about the dungeon levels? Anything on the area from second edition till now would be great. It’s interesting that there is no mention of them in the Cormyr section of the FRCS. What’s up with that? Basically feel free to write anything you know about the Helmlands including why they were not mentioned in FRCS! Thanks:D

Since its one of the main goals of the churches of Torm and Mystra to clean the dead and wild magic zones, I suppose it was cleaned...

Maybe I'm wrong though...

Hasn't been mentioned in 3e, might be mentioned in the upcoming "Cormyr: The Tearing of the Weave".

Or it might be gone. I note a solar can use wish as an at-will spell-like ability, wiping out a 30-foot radius of dead or wild magic every six seconds. Assuming that between them Mystra, Azuth, Torm, and other gods interested in wiping out the area were able to continuously spare a single solar to the work, in fourteen years (1358-1372 DR) that one solar could clear out just under 7,500 square miles of dead- and wild- magic.

Well in the second edition which took place about 10 years after the time of trouble Cormyr was still having problems with the Helmlands. They had to send mercenary company’s and Purple Dragons in to clear it out twice in that 10 year period. So unless they cleaned it up in that last 4 years it should still be there.

Well, perhaps he meant that they were just 'brutally removed' by the D&D's very own Elena Bobbit - 3e. They both just viscously hack and slash away at the things we love most. ;)

Or, he could have just been a jerk. ;)

Probably just being a Jerk. Lord knows it wasn’t helpful. Also he is some sort of grammar Nazi, which makes him a bad egg.

The answer doesn’t make a lot of sense. Solar’s are pretty important emissaries of the God. Remember they are almost Demigods they are so powerful. Why would a God waist a resource like that on something so trivial? It’s like sending a Demigod to do yard work.

Also why didn’t they go after any of the other areas of Magical Instability? Like Tantras!

It seems like they just got deleted between 2nd edition and 3rd edition. Which sadness me because the Helmlands where an interesting area. I hope someone can prove me wrong and point me in the direction of a Helmlands reference from 3rd edition so at least I know they still exist.

I pretty sure the Helmlands are still there, but I can’t figure out why there hasn’t been anything written about them since 2nd edition.

You know, I did a quick search and from what I read
People like you, have been asking that question since 2001
Looks like your right and they haven’t published anything on it for sometime
Doesn’t look very hopeful..sorry

The answer doesn’t make a lot of sense.

It was about 95% a joke.

The Helmlands are on the map printed in "Death of the Dragon" back in 2000. I haven't seen a mention since.

Well that’s promising. I wonder if they were mentioned offhand in the novel.

It gained intelligence and used it power to hid from the sight of mortals and gods. It is currently trying to evolve into a more material being.

Okay, enough with jokes. I think that it just hasn't come up in the text yet, being skipped over due to other events taking the realms.

But you might want to look up Volo's guide to everything magic (Not the exact title, but...) on the wizards download site, last time I saw it. It had an artifact that was linked to the creation and possible destruction of the Helmlands.

Yeah I read that. That was the last published mention of the Helmlands. Its old 2nd edition stuff. I believe the artifact was Helms tear. It still doesn’t explain why the Helmlands have yet to be mention in the 3rd edition. I mean especially with everything that’s been happening in Cormyr in the last few years.

Helmlands, Helmlands, anyone anyone?

Could be the silence stems from all that has been happening in Cormyr. Who has time to go look at an old problem with all the new ones popping up sort of thing I guess. If you want them there, they're there, if not, you can happily invent some reason why they aren't there anymore.

Yeah, but with all the new problems I would have thought the Helmlands would have been mentioned as a continuing or reinforced problem. After all it would become really annoying if the Helmlands filled up with Goblin Refugees.

At least you'd know where they were... not necessarily a bad thing to know. Very good really strategically speaking.

Yeah but if you remember in second edition they said the Helmlands was cleared out three times by Armys of Purple dragons but it kept filling back up with bad guys. Mainly due to the magical instability. It made the war wizards useless.

And here I thought you liked conflict... ;)

Don't recall them sending out full armies though, thought it was just chartered adventurers... never paid that much attention to the region though, never really caught my interest that much, so I'm probably wrong about that one.

They used Purple Dragons the first time then they sent a bunch of mercenary companies after that.

Reading Volo's Guide to all things Magical, it's kind of obvious This wild magic area was caused by the artifact The Guardian’s Tear.

This item was stolen by Drow and now is in the Underdark.

Since the artifact was removed from the area, it stands to reason the are known as the Helmlands no longer exists as a wild magic area.

Thats my guess at least.

The region was created from Mystra’s destruction. The artifact was created at the same time. The artifact produces effects similar to the Helmlands, but is not the cause. All the Gods deaths left marks on the world. Mystra’s left a particularly deep gash because she was the Goddess of magic.
