Can someone explain me what a turnip is? And why do gnomes have an obsession with them?

What? It's a type of vegetable, and not a particularly impressive one.

As for the gnomes I couldn't say. Probably just another one of the many bizarre fetishes attached to gnomes over the years.

A quick look at turnip terminology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnip_%28disambiguation%29)

As for why gnomes have an obsession with turnips, it can safely be counted among the number of other customs gnomes (rock gnomes in particular) have in common with Northern Europeans, most notably Fenno-Scandians, the latter of whom have traditionally maintained good relationships with the gnome folk for centuries.

Why don't be silly. Every one knows why gnomes have such a fascination with Turnips. I was telling my Granduncle about it just the other day. Now, you see, my grand uncle is a rather strange character. For one thing, he's not actually related to me; He just claims to be. We think this all started when he was out adventuring and took afew too many hits to the head from an ogre. Not just any ogre mind you; This ogre was leading his party. I guess he and Unncy just didn't really seem to get along.

So anyway; You see, My granduncle and his party were walking along, somewhere near Amn if memory serves. And anyway, they were on a quest to find a way to stop the Bandits that had been raiding the area. silly quest, im my oppinion, since the bandits weren't actually much of a threat. Rather cowardly, to be honest, and more busy fighting gnolls than robbing merchants. But, I suppose a gold piece is a gold piece, and so my uncle was there.

But now, you see, bandits are a rather interesting subject. did I ever tell you the story of my old friend Argitchra? Now I don't mean to brag, but he was a bandit of no little repute near Waterdeep. Quiet a fine man, that Arghitchra, even though he counldn't stand turnips. I never did understand that. But oh well.

A turnip is a shrunken mauve-hued illithid head, with all but one tentacle severed and the head turned upside down.

They're very useful as spell components.

In the game Animal Crossing, the entire economy is based around Turnips. In my day, I was the greatest Turnip-Trader in all the land....

Yep, raw they are crisp and taste like cucumber or watermelon rind, but with more of a twang and a little sting.

The asian markets sell pickled Tunips called "Dai kong" that are usually yellowish in color, and if the Halflings love turnips so much then likely Picled Turnips is likely the most popular way to carry them long term. it is slightly sweet and slightly sour and if you ever had Sweet Sour ribs pickeled turnips may be among the "weird veggies in there"

Used in stews they can be mistaken for potatoes at first but the twang give them away. After cooking for a while they turn partially transusent and donate their "Twang" to the stew broth....It's my Grampa's secret ingredient in his beef stew (turnip is removed before serving...lol)

[QUOTE=Ramenth;12257623]Gnome story...... removed for convenience..[QUOTE]

Why, that reminds me of my cousin Tilly Fleetknees, and the garden she had at the foot of a dryad tree in the Forest of Wyrms. She moved up there expecting well aerated soil, and did she get a supprise! Oh yes indeed! Why, I remember it as if it was burned into my memory with a flaming stick, which is very close to the truth actually....

The gnomes and turnips deal was more or less set up thanks to Jan Janson, the gnomish Illusionist from Baulder's Gate II who couldn't go ten seconds without starting some innane story, and then wouldn't get a chance to finish it thanks to the fact that he remembered another story. He was an inventer, mage, thief, and turnip salesmen, and talked quite abit about his crazy reletives. If you can find it online, you should read the endgame summery of his fate...... you can find it on Gamebanshee come to think of it.....

Personaly I hate the Gnome = Turnup lover thing. Its the D&D equivelent of the Fish Malk. Much preffer Eberron's treatment of Gnomes, though having said that the gunslining Gnomes of Lantan have a certain charm.

I don't know... I like that the gnomes are less retensive and more good-willed and humorlike than the dwarves. Make them more grim and dark and it's sad.

And note, teddymalks are just peoples who didn't get the malks, like the guys who play the kenders as simply ADD thieving brats.

Keep in mind that most of the time you find a gnome annoying, they're doing it on purpose.

was talking fresh of ocurse, although I did have dish one time consisting of pickles and porkchops as the main ingredients, not bad food mind you.

Ever try battered pickles? Sliced thin and cooked correctly they are really good.

I can't stand turnip - it's one of those vegetables that could have been forgotten. x-x

My gnomes prefers potatoes in the north, and sweet potatoes in the south. Like a certain song of Mononc' Serge and Anonymus. X3

Food is what you make of it, who would have thought that tahini (sesame seed paste) garlic, lemon, a little salt and some garbanzos thrown into a blender and pureed would be so darn good.

Or yogurt with some garlic, cumin, seasme oil and ground red pepper splashed on some chicken would be down right tasty.

Or for that matter, yogurt with a tablespoon of salt placed into some cheese cloth and left to sit draining over the sink for a night then chilled and served with some olive oil on it as spread on pita with some cucumbers and tomatos piled on and seasoned with fresh pepper and oregano

okay I'm hungry now

Rock Gnomes are simply what the Standard Gnomes are called on Toril (In Forgotten Realms) and there in no added Torilian cultural specificness I can think of off hand other than, like most of the other races, they were "imported" by the Asabi during their Heyday via interrealm/interdimensional gates (Asabi seem to be the original indigenous creatures of Toril whose great culture fell under the Slave Races uprising with the help of their interloper godlings)
