He didn't. That's what he was known as in Calimshan.

Eric Boyd had a DRAGON article in the works a few years ago which, amongst other things, dealt with some magic items that Hilather [Halaster] created when he was working for the Shoon. This article explicitly stated that Halaster was Hilather. See the write-up of "Kuraltaar the Demonshield" in Dragons of Faerûn.

Hilather is his given name, Halaster the grander name he assumed as a mage of power.

Before coming to Toril millenia ago he was known as Saruman, until he got beat-up by some halflings. ;)

After that, he was never quite right in the head. :dancin:

I'm known as Susrak, So what?
Regardless of what I'm known as, and regardless of the FR canon police (those sad, little, tiny, and pathetic people that keep pointing out Candlekeep opinions), I'm still me.

Well, ya see, he really wasn’t paying enough attention to his purchases and internet browsing and so he ended up the victim of identify theft and then kept getting all these catalogs he didn’t want and lots and lots of spam and billed for stuff he didn't buy so then he did this magical finagling to become Hilather and tricked the catalog and span and billing people into sending all their stuff to Elminster and that is why the Zhents invaded Shadowdale, they are actually a collection agency. He is CE, after all.

Actually, the original Ruins of Undermountain boxed set first stated that Halaster used to be named Hilather.

That's the one! Thanks Eric. ;)

I just couldn't immediately recall the "first" source for Hilather when I replied the other day.
