In my quest for new information about Thay, I googled Szass Tam and the name Larloch popped up. It states, in 2nd edition, that Larloch is a shade/lich sorceror of imense power (around lvl 46) whom controls huge armies of undead and is secretly behind Tam.

If that is true, what happened to him? Was he lost in the transition to 3.0 or was he just a internet hyped panzy?

Larloch is indeed a very *real* part of the Realms setting (http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Castle/2566/ed-larloch.htm).

I'd also recommend the sources:- Lost Empires of Faerūn, Lords of Darkness, Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast, the Netheril: Empire of Magic boxed set and plenty of Ed's replies at Candlekeep. These are entirely more responsible sources for information regarding Larloch, when compared to just about anything you'll learn online elsewhere.

See also the 'Tears So White' tale from the Realms of the Elves anthology for the "Last Mythal" trilogy.

He's the source of the mighty Larloch's Lesser Life Drain spell from BG I+II (you know, the one that steals 1d4+1 hp)!! :D

hehe, I loved that spell. Any 3.0/3.5 versions of it? They'd probably changed the name, but anything that resembles that?

Larloch is believed to be an Archwizard from the times of the Netherese Empire. If you look at the Netheril boxed set you'll run across some parts where his name is mentioned both in spells and in history. I believe he even had his own Enclave.

The incredibly powerful Lich now can be found in Warloch's Crypt along the Sword Coast, and I doubt seriously that any hero is going to take this guy easily, even with a +3 toothbrush. His hordes of Shadows, Ghouls, Ghasts, and Vampire apprentices are more than enough to keep the average epic party of adventurers or well funded mercenary army at bay.

Yeah, but then any Chosen of Mystra comes along and sneezes and he's dead.

Larloch vs. Telemont would be an epic battle I'd love to read about.

The Chosen actually fear and are somewhat nervous about Larloch. NOT because of what he could do directly face to face with them.

This is confirmed in the Lost Empires of Faerūn. Warlock's Crypt is actually the ruins of the fallen enclave Orbedal. Not sure about Larloch's own enclave or if he was known by another name in Netheril.

His hordes of Shadows, Ghouls, Ghasts, and Vampire apprentices are more than enough to keep the average epic party of adventurers or well funded mercenary army at bay.
Not to mention servitude liches, which last I heard, he has at least sixty.

In the Lords of Darkness (page 161) his levels are Wizard 20/Epic 12. If you convert that, it would probably be Wizard 32 or Wizard 27/Netherese Arcanist 5. Or something to that effect. All and all, I don't particularly like the stats given to him in that book. They don't do him justice.

There is an interesting dialog on page 4 of The Winds of Netheril, between Larloch and Tam. Tam himself, made a deal with Larloch in one time in the near past. In return for unknown service(s), Larloch gave Tam two artifacts; the Death Moon Orb and the Thakorsil's Throne (both are detailed in the old 2nd Volo's Guide to All Things Magical. The old Spellbound box (which also should include a detailed description of the two artifacts) has two adventures; Throne of Deceit and the Runes of Chaos, which are about Tam freeing the demon lord Eltab from his prison and attempting to bind him into his service, using the two artifacts.

That is the extend of the relationship between Larloch and Tam, as far as I know.

About Larloch's motives, I am not sure. He's still a bit of an enigma for me. He seems content to live out the rest of his eternity in Warlock's Crypt and yet I haven't found out exactly what he wants.

IIRC, though, hasn't Larloch said himself that he fears Silver Fire because it can destroy him or something to that effect? Not that it would ever happen, of course - balance of power is all.

His motives/goals are to construct a giant network of portals, under his control so that if a mage uses one, he can mind-ream him or what-have-you as he pleases. The portal spells are ready, but he hasn't figured out how to bind them yet, and until that point, he won't proceed any further with his plans.

He's statted in Lords of Darkness, but I prefer Ed's version - a CR46 or so, who can choose which spells cast affect him and which spells don't, from 1st level right through to 9th.

I think Larloch is one of the cooler personalities of the realm really.

His history is one of great interest and I can't help but see him as sorta the Undead Eliminster of the world. Both are from the same age (if I recall correctly), both are of immense power. Both have the same opininon on villians and heroes. Its better to just stay home and be a guiding hand then a outright antagonist to others. Hence why he shrouds himself in a protective cover of undead loyal to him. I don't think he does it for the sole proposal of teaching his fellow undead things. But to mainly make it nearly impossible for his own continued existence to be at risk. When you have 60 liches, hundred of vampires, ghouls, ghasts, bodaks, skeletons, zombies and more around you...not alot people can do. If people wanted to wipe out his enclave it would require more time and energy then one country could commit to such a extended campaign. Now if he started going out and causing trouble that would inspire various factions and countries to work against him.

Exactly. The thought of Larloch putting himself into such a position, where the Chosen would be antagonistic towards him and could actually use Silver Fire against him, is a bit silly.

Not anymore, his liches went out for a party during the time that The Last Mythal took place and he no longer has 60 liches.

True. My bad. Although I'm pretty sure here didn't use them all and nothing prevents him from restocking.

Those liches may have died in the short story, but keep in mind that they probably aren't permanently dead. I don't recall the semantics of the story, but I don't see why they wouldn't have been able to retreat to phylacteries that may have had contingent spells on them to transport away or something (or maybe some spell that extended their link with their phylacteries). Unless I missed something phrased in the story that would imply that they had been absolutely destroyed.

Well, I never liked that story in particular. The best use for that story was to just fill the pages. When you read it, it's hard to even take it very seriously. Just had to read it so I could say I had read it. It's certainly not something that I'm worried about, or taking into account in my games. Some of the liches might have returned to their phylacteries and others Larloch could simply have restocked. No matter how you look at it, I'm pretty sure he still has enough liches to go around.

You don't. Larloch pre-dates Elminster by well over five hundred years, and quite possibly several centuries or millenniums more - El was born in Athalantar in 212 DR, while Larloch is a survivor of Netheril who ruled his own enclave in his day (and Netheril's fall was back in -339 DR). El is almost a child compared to Larloch.

Why is Larloch so powerful?
3 reasons:
1. He was one of the stronger archmages of netheril before its fall - strong enough to have defeated and enslaved several other surviving archmage lichs of Netheril after the fall. He has had nearly 1700 years since the fall to work on building his power and collecting items and spells of interest to him since.

2. He has a deal with Mystra so that he is basically free to do spell research of various sorts for himself and her for an undisclosed purpose - this is much of the reason why the Chosen leave him alone - basically they have been warned off by Mystra (unless something gets screwed up). Having this purpose be (permanently) undisclosed is a greeat deux ex machina as it allows DMs to pull him out of the closet to fix or wreck their campaigns as they choose. Such as my idea for eliminating the shadow weave - He has been researching an epic level spell similar to either Karsus Avatar, a really souped up Rip SHadow Weave or the Dragonrage Mythal that will either rip it from shar, destroy it or block it planet wide. - why the lichs? he is going to need those 60+ high level casters and their life/unlife forces to complete teh spell at which point they will cease to exist or become part of the spellweave (as the DM sees fit). WHat roll do the PCs have in all of this? - why defending him from all the shadow weave casters/sharrans that will start to attack once he starts castingthe spell of course - one hell of a battle royal whenever WotC (or the DM) chose to return the realms to sanity.
3. he is so powerful because he is supposed to be beyond any party's defeat - like Tam your going to have to find a way to meet him and negotiate with him for the thing(s) he has that you want. Like Elminster (and the otehr chosen of several deities) he is really not meant to be there to fight - but as a means of pushing the PCs on to greater heights - so he is always hidden in hte depths of Warlock's crypt waiting to be used but too strong to be abused. (whetehr you use WotC's stats or Ed's stats)

Larloch is pretty much THE most powerful guy in the realms. 60 liches + 3 demi liches in his control, and him the hive mind leader of all of them + if he is physically taken down, he just swaps bodies with them and forces their soul back into their own phylactery(Even if silverfired, he just swaps bodies with another lich he dominates). Not to mention hundreds of vampires(Think, ancient, extremely powerful wizard vampires who are resistant to sunlight and silver), and just about every other kind of undead.

The spellpool in Larloch's crypt is probably the most comprehensive in the realms, allowing him to syphon's spells from it at will + He has dedicated several of his epic rods into this spellpool. His 25 Ioun stones are nothing to sneeze at either.

Heck, Greenwood is on record saying Larloch is the one guy nobody even wants to attempt going at, Elminster included, because he would be impossible to defeat in his lair. Outside his lair, Greenwood says he could still go toe to toe with any of the chosen of Mystra. Its kind of strange. The latest book claims larloch is only 32, but greenwood denies this, claiming he is 46.

I've always been under the impression that Larloch isn't evil, Per se, but rather leads an evil organization and periodically tells his minions to do evil things to thin the ranks.

Oh, he's plenty evil, he just doesn't care about most of FR. He has no need to propagate suffering, to dominate the masses or anything most evil beings like to do but he'll gladly sacrifice entire kingdoms if it would aid him in developing his magical knowledge.

Basically, anything that gets in his way is dealt with ruthlessly, no matter if it's demons, devils, angels, churches, kingdoms or wee little children.

Further, when he finally is able to perfect his portal enchantment then he'll be ripping arcane knowledge and power from anyone who uses those portals (though it would probably be rare, since there isn't much that others know that he doesn't already know a lot more about).

Larloch's enclave was the flying city of Jiksidur, which crashed in Narfell. One of his agreements with Tam (in return for those two artifacts) is for Tam to reclaim some of the magical treasures of Jiksidur for Larloch.

Which IS NOT to say that Larloch would have a difficult time acquiring those items himself (though, one must consider the enemies that Larloch may have made throughout the planes, that might make him want to stay home more often as well)

Not that I think you're trying to imply that KtM, just that some might jump on that as a "it's a partnership of equals!" thing. :)

Wasn't implying anything of the sort. That's what it says in LEoF :) It's efficient. Why waste time when you can get someone else to do menial tasks for you? Leaves you with more time to do the real work.

Exactly.

A pretty bauble (whatever he's having Tam pick up) is just that when compared with Larloch's true work (the portal network for one and probably dozens upon dozens of other experiments/research projects).
