Okay i know Drizzt's official stats are in Forgotten Realms Campaign setting, but is there anyplace where I can see Wulfgars official stats? I would like to see them, but that brings up the question, is there ofiicial stats for him, or do they only have stats for Drizzt?

Both him and Bruenor can be found in either Heroes' Lorebook (AD&D) or Silver Marches (3E).

wulfgar is a 9th level fighter (barbarian kit) in heroes lorebook

bruenor is a 13th level fighter on pg 77 of silver marches

there is another thread called Characters of Mr R.A. Salvatore in this forum which states their 3.5 stats

The latest stats for Wulfgar appera at the back of his Night Below D&D Miniatures stat card. He's listed as a 16th level barbarian over there.

As was mentioned above, Wulfgar's stats can be found in the 'Silver Marches' book. I THINK he's listed there as being a 9th level barbarian. For me, I'd put him around 12th level, and personally stat him as a barbarian 10/fighter 2.

Both Wulfgar and Bruenor stats were reported in 3E Silver Marches (as noted above by other members), but they were unaccurate at best: Bruenor's weapon should be a battle axe or a dwarven waraxe (in fact in the novels he uses it one handed along with a shield), but in Silver Marches he is armed with a great axe, which prevents the use of a shield.
Also, Wulfgar stats do not reflect his deeds in the books.

So I used stats of both of them I found in an old AD&D handbook from the FR series: "Hall of Heroes".
Here Wulfgar is a 6th level fighter (barbarian kit); in AD&D a 6th level warrior had 32000 XP, so I figure an equal ammount of XP translated in 3.X rules, which means a 8th level character. I think Bbn5/Ftr3 suit him best for the Wulfgar we see around the Halfling Gem (with an advancement of 1 level each novel after that - Wulfgar being alive, thus discharging any downtime in the hands of Errtu I know, very few will consider this spoiler, but you can never know :P ).
His AD&D stats were: Str19 Dex16 Con18 Int15 Wis14 Cha15 which seem suitable to me, except the Str score. Now, making adjustment between AD&D and 3.X Str score is tricky: AD&D Str19 meant that the character inflicted +7 damage, +3 to hit and had a maximum lifting capacity of 640 punds.
Which means, if I am correct (I go with kilos for weight): the damage adjustment of a Str24 3.x character, the hit adjustment of a Str16 3.x character and the lifting capacity of a Str26 3.x character.
I usually adjust 3.x Wulfgar's Strength to 20 (started with Str 18, +1 4th lvl, +1 8th lvl).
Aegis Fang is credited to be a maul in Silver Marches, but it is clearly a warhammer; plus the fact that Bruenor made the hammer, being circa a 12th 13th lvl character.
So here's my 3.5 Aegis Fang: using the rules of dwarven forges in Races of Stone, Bruenor's level is used as caster level for the pupose of calculating Aegis Fang's abilities and this means a total bonus of +4 upon the weapon: +1 mithral throwing distance returning warhammer.
Wulfgar's armor remains obscure through the novels, so I'd go with either a non magical studded leather or a non magical chain shirt. But if I want a more badass Wulfgar I give him a mithral breastplate (as he gains access to it, potentially, by living with the dwarves of mithral hall).
So, my "Silent Blade" Wulfgar is a Bbn4/Ftr4; "Spine of the world" Bbn5/Ftr4; "Sea of Swords" Bbn5/Ftr5; "Thousand Orcs" Bbn6/Ftr5; "Lone Drow" Bbn6/Ftr6; "The two swords" Bbn7/Ftr6. Of course this means at the end of the novel.

Oops! I was forgetting Bruenor.

According to Hall of Heroes, He has the following ability scores: Str17 Dex15 Con19 Int12 Wis15 Cha15. He was a 9th lvl Fighter, which gives us the first problem: this means 250000 XP, which is epic level character. For Wulfgar the XP calculation was fitting, but I don't think it is the same for high level characters like Bruenor. So I usually go with a bit of common sense for the 13th lvl fighter at the end of The Halfling's Gem.
Ability scores are fine, so I leave them as they are; if I want a little more badass Bruenor I push up his Con by +3 (+1 4th lvl, +1 8th lvl, +1 12th lvl), thus having a score of 22. Pretty good.
Bruenor's properties are pretty much tricky, though: in the novels it is never openly told that they are magic, so I have two options: 1) mwk dwarven waraxe + mwk heavy steel shield + dwarven breastplate + horned helm;
the option number 2): +1 dwarven waraxe, +1 steel shield, +2 dwarven breastplate (according to what is said in Hall of Heroes his shield is +1 and his armor +2 and he wields a +1 weapon).
After Halfling's Gem I use this advancement progression (end of the novel): "Legacy" Ftr14; "Starless Night" no advancement; "Siege of Darkness" Ftr15; "Passage to Dawn" no advancement (ok maybe he should go up one level, but I don't feel he has a so relevant part in the novel  ); "Silent Blade" no advancement (again no relevant deeds); "Sea of Swords" Ftr16; "Thousand Orcs" Ftr17; "Lone Drow" Ftr17 (resurrected and loose 1 lvl, back to Ftr16; he gains a new level and is again Ftr17 by the end of the novel though); "The two swords" Ftr18 (he has no relevant part in this book, but I think that fighting tirelessly against orcs give you some XP, even if you do nothing important).
That's that, how I give stat blocks to these two characters, completely ignoring most of the official stat blocks :D
Obviously mine is a completely personal interpretation: feel free to disagree and change ;)

@ White Wizard: I like how you came up with the conversion/advancements of Wulfgar and Bruenor.

As for Aegis-fang, I've come up with this:

Aegis-fang is a +3 Dwarvencraft Dwarven Thrower Maul. It functions as only a +3 Maul, except when wielded by the barbarian Wulfgar, or any dwarf. In these hands the maul gains an additional +1 enhancement bonus (for a total enhancement bonus of +4) and gains the Returning special ability. It can be hurled with a 30 foot range increment, and when hurled it deals an extra d8 (or an extra 2d8 vs. giants) bludgeoning damage on a successful hit. Also, Aegis-fang is keyed to Wulfgar personally, meaning that if he is within 500 feet of the maul and someone else throws it, the weapon will return to his grasp unless he wills it otherwise. This tie is so strong that even if he drops it, or is somehow separated from his mighty weapon, he need only call out its name and it will magically teleport back to his grasp…even from right out of another’s grasp! Doing this is a free action that can be used once per round, and cannot be used to allow Wulfgar more than one ranged attack with Aegis-fang in one round.

As for Bruenor, I've statted him out as a fighter 14/exotic weapons master 1, and have fixed that pesky "greataxe" thing by replacing it with a Dwarven waraxe.

Thanks bondius!

And you are right: I forgot that Wulfgar can call Aegis Fang back! For anyone that wishes to use my version, simply add this power along with the others.

As for the Exotic Weapon Master Bruenor I admit it is very fitting. Nice job there!

And what's most strange is that usually official stats reflect a less powerful version of the character than that from the novels.
Say, for example Drizzt: his official stats on 3E FRCS are far from reflecting his deeds and they give him a scimitar of frost, when it's clearly a frostbrand scimitar with keyed functioning (I think when in presence of a magic fire and/or a demon).

Not that good? As far as I remember, anything over 15 becomes insanely dangerous. In any case, Drizzt is 18CR from what I remember(if you include his drow noble bonus of 2).

In any case, he should be in the 20's since he beat Zaknafein, a level 24 fighter, and Salvatore has noted that Drizzt became better than Zak was in his interactive threads.

But 16 is still far from "Not very good".

In any case, NPC stats do not always reflect Canon novels, and are extremely malleable.

Using your levelling system, what level would you place the other members of the companions of the hall?

Using your levelling system, what level would you place the other members of the companions of the hall?

I don't have a system, you know. I stat down characters using hints from books, and trying to figure out how their deeds in the novels can be translated into game rules (which is sometimes easy, sometimes not so much). However if a character goes through a full novel fighting and being useful to the plot, I think that he takes a level at the end of that novel. I he is not so prominent, I leave him at the same level he was.
However, to answer your question: I had a write up of Drizzt with a total of 19 class levels (fighter and ranger, using the non spellcasting variant of Perfect Warrior for the latter) by the end of the Hunter's Blades Trilogy. It was Rgr11/Ftr8 if I remember correctly.
I don't have any other write up, aside those I mentioned about Bruenor and Wulfgar.
Cattie.brie is a little bit tricky during the Streams of Silver/Halfling's Gem period, because she is really low level there. I think 5th, maybe 6th level by the end of the Halfling's Gem. Fighter, of course. She takes an additional two levels during Legacy, two more during Starless Night and one more during Siege of Darkness. During Silent Blade she isn't that much relevant, so she doesn't gain any new level. She gains one more level during Sea of Swords and a total of two levels during the entire Hunter's Blade Trilogy (representing mere fighting against orcs: otherwise she acts very little there).
Regis is a bit easier: I think he starts fittingly as a 6th level rogue and gains one level by the end of The Halfling's Gem. After that he gains another level at the end of Siege of Darkness and another one by the end of Silent Blade (representing the change in his mind after what happens to him during the adventure: he becomes more strong, more wise). Each novel after that is a +1 level for him: Sea of Swords, Thousand Orcs and The Two Swords.
I make Artemis Entreri (another character I statted for my own purposes) start as a Fighter 5 / Rogue 10 during Streams of Silver.
He becomes Fighter 6 by the end of that novel.
He gains anadditional Fighter level by the end of Legacy and a fighter level along with a rogue level during Starless Night. Another rogue level he gains during Silent Blade, and a fighter level during Servant of the Shard. The last novel I read about him is Promise of the Witch King, which I thinks gives him another +1 Fighter level (unfortunately Road to the Patriarch is not yet published in my country).
Jarlaxle is a tricky character to figure out: it is impossibile to determine his possessions (especially since more than a few of his items seem very particular and often aoutside the bounds of normal game rules), but I'd put him as a 15th level rogue / 5th level Fighter by the end of Promise of the Witch King.

I would be interested, very much so. I like your novel based level progression. Personally I have calculated levels by 1 a Trilogy, rather than by book.

Using Drizzt's 3.0 stats as an example. I placed him as Ftr10/Bbn1/Rgr1 at the end of Dark elf Trilogy and added 1 level a trilogy after that.

Icewind Dale - Ftr10/Bbn1/Rgr2
Legacy of the Drow - Ftr10/Bbn1/Rgr3
Paths of Darkness - Ftr10/Bbn1/Rgr4
Hunter's Blade - Ftr10/Bbn1/Rgr5

I use this progression for Artemis aswell, the other characters have different rates of advancement.

This is probably how WotC designers planned it. But I would like see where you place the points at which the characters level up in the individual books and which series you would guess the most levelling occured i.e. the most challenging adventure.

Ok, this is my version of Drizzt. You'll find that I haven't included special abilities to represent the Hunter and that's because I think it can be left out as a novelistic flavor. If you want the Hunter to pop up as stat bonuses, however, here's a couple of ways to do it with this Drizzt: 1) just throw in 1 level in the Barbarian class (add +1 Dex for reaching 20th lvl). 2) switch Fighter levels with Ranger levels: being a non-spellcasting ranger from Complete Warrior he gains a special ability that allows him to gain +4 to Strength OR Dexterity OR Wisdom once per day up to a total of 1 min. per character level (being 19 minutes)*. Or there's the third way: use both solutions and throw in Perfect Two Weapon Fighting for reaching 21st level (this a more badass Drizzt).
*: this way the number of feats shouldn't change (the Two Weapon Fighting feats would come entirely from the ranger class, while in the cersion below, just the Improved Two Weapon Fighting comes from the ranger class feature). Anyway check it up, if you make the change.

Does this mean you've placed his ranger levels as a product of his underdark life and the fighter levels afterwards. Could you show what levelling order you gave him through the novels? It seems you've given him some ranger before leaving the underdark (Drow favoured enemy) and some after he left(Giants favoured enemy). Also what level did you place at the time he left montolio's grove - end of Dark elf trilogy.

Drizzt very, very clearly has at least one level in Barbarian, due to his experiences in the Dark Elf trilogy.

This is highly debatable, as he only succumbs to his 'Hunter' side on 3 separate occasions throughout his life.

1st - The Underdark. During his Exile.
2nd - Against Artemis whilst battling again in the Underdark.
3rd - Whilst battling the Orcs of The spine of the World.

This can be chalked up to artistic liscence.

Well, that was AD&D, he was a fighter then :P
As I have said, mine are just home made write ups, so if you feel that he's got a level in the barbarian class, feel free to add it; I don't, though, so I didn't put it in the stats ;)

Unfortunately I have no idea of the precise order of leveling. However he starts as a fighter in this write up for the purpose of starting hp, skill points and feats. 2nd level is probably ranger (when Drizzt leads drow patrols in the underdark). However feat order could provide some hints about leveling because I level one by one when I made a write up (unfortunately this has been done some time ago, so I don't remember exactly the order of leveling).

Anyway I can come up with something like the leveling indications about Wulgar and Bruenor (previously on this thread). Giving some time of course.

And this is Artemis.

Like Drizzt's write up, this is entirely home made, based on what the novels say (mostly Silent Blade, Servant of the Shard and Promise of the Witch King). This is how I imagine Artemis Entreri by the end of Promise of the Witch King.

One note: I didn't put any level of assassin and it was a hard battle there, because Artemis is definitely an assassin. But the standard assassin PrC provides spells at it's very 1st level and clearly Artemis is not a spellcaster, so I didn't give him any level in the assassin PrC. However, if anyone is willing to create a non-spellcasting variant of the assassin class, I'd suggest Ftr8/Rog7/Ass5.

I have included stats for a few of Artemis possessions because they are not standard objects. I used material from PHB, CAd and Heroes of Battle, plus a few of FR setting books. I recently modified the vampiric ability of the dagger to meet the new version that has been described to me on this forum. Also, There are feeble and vague hints in Silent Sword suggesting that he may still possess Drizzt's mask of disguise after the facts of Starless Night.

Artemis Entreri: Medium humanoid (human); Ftr10/Rog10; HD 10d10+10d6+20; 124 hp; init. +6; Spd. 30 ft; AC 24 (+Dodge, +Combat Expertise, +jeweled dagger, +4 while fighting defensively); Atk. +23/+18/+13/+8 melee (1d8+7 and wounding 19-20/x2 Charon’s Claw) and +25/+20/+15 melee (1d4+5 and 1d6 hit point drain DC 16 17-20/x2 jeweled dagger); AS: sneak attack +5d6; QS: trapfinding, evasion, trap sense +3, uncanny dodge, improved uncanny dodge, skill mastery (Tumble, Disguise, Disable Device, Intimidate, Sleight of Hand, Open Lock); AL LE; ST F +11 R +16 W +9; Str16 (+3) Dex22 (+6) Con12 (+1) Int18 (+4) Wis17 (+3) Cha17 (+3)
Skills and feats: Bluff +11, Climb +16, Disable Device +17, Disguise +9 (+11 if observed), Escape Artist +17, Gather Information +11, Hide +20, Intimidate +19, Jump +10, Listen +15, Move Silently +20, Open Lock +14, Search +15, Sense Motive +13, Sleight of Hand +19, Speak Language [elven (drow)], Spot +15, Tumble +20; Two Weapon Fighting, Improved Unarmed Strike, Deflect Arrows, Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus (longsword), Combat Expertise, Dodge, Improved Two Weapon Fighting, Snatch Arrows, Elusive Target, Improved Disarm, Improved Feint, Superior Two Weapon Fighting.
Possessions: jeweled dagger (+4 keen defending vampiric dagger), Charon’s Claw (see below), Daern’s instant tent, cloak of protection +4 (see below), mask of greater disguise (see below).

Charon’s Claw – +4 wounding longsword. Intelligent Item Int10 (/) Wis13 (+1) Cha13 (+1). It can communicate with the wielder empathically and can see and hear up to 30 ft. NE. The Wielder can see in natural and magic darkness as if affected by a blacklight spell. Ego 10. Curse: if the wielder fails an Ego roll, he becomes extremely possessive about the sword. If the sword is held without the protection of the glove, the character holding it must win a Will ST DC15 or suffer the effects of a disintegrate spell (Caster Level 20). Wearing the Glove of the Claw (now destroyed) allow to avoid this effect.
Powers: upon command, as a swift action, Charon Claw releases trails of ash that fill the square of the wielder providing concealment (20% miss chance). Such concealment is similar to that provided by a obscuring mist spell and is influenced by the same things that would influence such a spell (like a gust of wind spell), with the difference that it lasts only 2 rounds. The wielder’s foes do not benefit from concealment provided by Charon’s Claw (i.e. the wielder does not suffer 20% miss chance provided by the sword, but he may suffer any other form of concealment coming from another source).

Cloak of Protection +4: this cloak works as a cloak of resistance +4 and a pair of bracers of armor +4, providing a +4 resistance bonus to Saving Throws and a +4 armor bonus to Armor Class. There are also +1, +2, +3 and +5 versions of these cloaks. I took this item from AD&D and translated directly in 3.5 as it was.

Mask of greater disguise: this mask grants the wielder the benefits of an alter self spell that lasts as long as the user wears the mask.

wasnt this thread about wulfgar?
ok we all love drizzt but in my opion wulfgar is just as good a char as him.
i think ppl try and make drizzt out too be a god of some sorts but you are forgeting about wulfgar,catter-brie, regis, and one of the most important the KING of mithral hall.
dont get me wrong drizzt is awsome but he would be nearly as good without his companions they make each other some of the best npcs in d&d so give credit when credits due.

just a opion i guess

Anyway I can come up with something like the leveling indications about Wulgar and Bruenor (previously on this thread). Giving some time of course.

I'd like to see Wulfgar's, Bruenor is fairly straightforward.

Charon’s Claw

Have you looked at the write-up for this in the latest Dragon magazine?

You are correct. This thread has become abit of RAS character thread now. I'll claim responsiblity for this as I was curious about White_Wizard's levelling system - which was showcased by a print of Wulfgar's stats.

People do like to beef up Drizzt alot. Personaly I'm happy with his level as it is, maybe only abit of tweaking here and there to help capture him properly.

No one's slagging off the other companions - yet. Drizzt is the people's favourite though, whether it's deserved or not, so it's only natural that the other characters will not get as much limelight.

However your point stands, this is a thread about Wulfgar, we should try to discuss him.

I heard a mini was coming out this month with new stats on Drizzt and wulfgar. I also heard both were epic level now.
Eli_the_Tanner

09-04-07, 06:55 PM
There is a minatures boxed set coming out called the legend of Drizzt. It recreates the battle between Wulfgar, Drizzt and Icingdeath - in fact here is the page: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndmin/9780786943500

An 'Epic' stat card does not represent the same thing as it does in the RPG. It is simply a more powerful version of the monster in the minatures rules, often bringing it closer to their roleplaying stats - but rearely exceeding them. Drizzt and Wulfgar's offical roleplaying stats have not changed, in fact the 3.5 version of the character is represented on the reverse of the skirmish(non-epic) minature cards.

Indeed I don't feel like I'm one of those "Drizzt-is-a-god-yay" fans that crop up from time to time. Yes, I have the whole of Drizzt's novels collection (aside Road to the Patriarch) and, yes, I don't like Wulfgar's character so much. But This does not mean, I can assure you, that I will push up Drizzt's stats while potting down Wulfie's: I made up Wulfgar's leveling looking at an old AD&D FR handbook and adapted the leveling both to 3.5 and further novels that cropped up since then. The same goes for Drizzt: usually I write down stats for famous characters looking at what they do in the novels, rather than looking at official write ups, which, imho, are bound to follow rules too closely and often do not include material from non-base handbooks.
If it canbe said that my write ups are more powerful than official ones, it is only because it's true. My write ups are a bit more close to the novels' heroic characters' deeds, while it's hard that the official statted characters can do the same things that they do in the novels.

Like Eli_the_Tanner asked, anyway, I'll see if I can post a write up (again, entirely homemade) of Wulfgar, so I'll bring the thread back to it's point of interest (I'll post also Jarlaxle write up because Eli asked me previously: it would be unfair not to mantain my word about that).

Have you looked at the write-up for this in the latest Dragon magazine?

Unfortunately not.

And here we are with wulfgar (soon Jarlaxle, as promised!).

I took a leaf out of Alurvelve's Wulfgar with the Prodigy feature from PHBII (which he calls Powerhouse: that's why I never heard it :P ).
Also I used a slightly modified dwarventhrower for Aegis Fant (and this was due to Eli's write up in this thread if I'm not mistaken).

Basically he takes Str18 at 1st level, +2 for the Prodigy Feature (and +4 to Str based skill checks), +1 at 4th lvl and +1 at 8th lvl.

I hope you all like this! As usual, it is strictly homemade, not based on any recent official stats (but, as I said before, it is based on an old AD&D write up, levelled up). This should cover for Wulfgar at the end of The Two Swords.

Wulfgar: Medium Humanoid (human, Illuskan); Bbn7/Ftr6; CR 13; HD 7d12+28 and 6d10+24; 131 hp; Init. +3; Spd. 40 ft; AC 18 (touch 13, flat footed 18, +1-5 Combat Expertise); Atk. +23/+18/+13 melee (2d8+6 19-20/x3 [or 3d8+6 19-20/x3 against giants] Aegis Fang) or +20 ranged (2d8+6 19-20/x3 [or 3d8+6 19-20/x3 against giants] Aegis Fang); SA rage 2/day; SQ prodigy, fast movement, uncanny dodge, trapsense +2, improved uncanny dodge, DR 1/-; AL CG; ST F +14 R +7 W +6; Str22 (+6) Dex16 (+3) Con18 (+4) Int15 (+2) Wis14 (+2) Cha15 (+2).

Skills and feats: Climb +22, Craft (weaponsmithing) +12, Jump +27, Listen +13, Ride +15, Spot +9, Survival +9, Swim +23; Power Attack, Cleave, Weapon Focus (warhammer), Combat Expertise, Improved Unarmed Strike, Point Blank Shot, Far Shot, Weapon Specialization (warhammer), Improved Critical (Warhammer).

Possessions: Aegis Fang (see below), mithral breastplate.

Aegis Fang: +2 warhammer; since it is a special dwarventhrower warhammer made for Wulfgar, in the hands of a dwarf or in Wulfgar’s it works as a +3 warhammer, it has a range increment of 30 ft and deals +1d8 damage (+2d8 against giants). As an additional power, Wulfgar, or any dwarf, can call Aegis Fang in his hands simply by speaking it’s name (swift action): if Aegis fang is within 100 ft it appears instantly in the hands of the caller.

Also I used a slightly modified dwarventhrower for Aegis Fant (and this was due to Eli's write up in this thread if I'm not mistaken).

Actually Bondious was the one who wrote up aegis-fang in this thread - all credit to Bondious. I did suggest using a dwarven thrower in Alurvelve's thread, though.

Wulfgar: Medium Humanoid (human, Illuskan); Bbn7/Ftr6; CR 13; HD 7d12+28 and 6d10+24; 131 hp; Init. +3; Spd. 40 ft; AC 18 (touch 13, flat footed 18, +1-5 Combat Expertise); Atk. +23/+18/+13 melee (2d8+6 19-20/x3 [or 3d8+6 19-20/x3 against giants] Aegis Fang) or +20 ranged (2d8+6 19-20/x3 [or 3d8+6 19-20/x3 against giants] Aegis Fang); SA rage 2/day; SQ prodigy, fast movement, uncanny dodge, trapsense +2, improved uncanny dodge, DR 1/-; AL CG; ST F +14 R +7 W +6; Str22 (+6) Dex16 (+3) Con18 (+4) Int15 (+2) Wis14 (+2) Cha15 (+2).

Not sure about the Mithral Breastplate but it all seems preety good.

Indeed that's not based on any of the novels. Wulfie's armor can be tricky: nothing significant about it is said in the novels, and nothing leads to think that it could be magic, so, since it is not mentioned, I assumed it is not magical. Mithral breastplate could be afforded by Wulfgar while he lives in Mithral Hall and fights daily against Obould's orcs. Also a breastplate provides some sort of protection, indeed the best among non-magical armors (light and medium ones).
If you are not convinced, then a leather armor or studded leather can be used (maybe magical, +1 or +2).
Hall of Heroes states that he wears layers of wolf hides that provide him +3CA (studded leather, non magical).
Also, in this handbook, Aegis Fang has +5 enhancement bonus.

Wouldn't Hide armour be appropiate then. +3 AC bonus aswell. It is described as 'multiple layers of leather and animal hides' in th PHB.

Is this +5 in addition to it's throwing propeties? A +4 Dwarven Thrower could match this - when thrown a dwarven thrower gains +1 to it's enhancement bonus.

A note about Wulfgar's armor, in the Hunter's Blade (the second book, I think) it mentions that Wulfgar's wearing chainmail. It's only mentioned once, and I only remember because I re-read those books fairly recently and was working on a re-write of his character, so the armor thing stuck.

Now I don't know if it was a chain shirt OR actual chainmail, and it didn't say it was mithral, though if I were to guess/take a stab at it, I'd probably go with a +3 Mithral Shirt (Mithral Hall, after all), which is the same enhancement bonus as the +3 Hide that he's statted with in 'The Silver Marches' sourcebook.

As it is, though, the only "official" armor is that +3 Hide.

Nice catch Bondious, I should re-read some of the books really. Makes sense that Bruenor would kit people out with some quality dwarven armour, especially if Obould's causing a fuss.

I'd put my money on the mithral shirt as well. In the Tom Costa write-up of the companions of the hall both Regis and Cattie-brie have been give mithral shirts. So I guess it would make sense that Wilfgar would have something similar.

As it is, though, the only "official" armor is that +3 Hide.

:D

Aye, I imagine though that we'll see an update of all these "official" stats in the new FRCS.

Absolutely. It is his official stats' armor indeed.

Yep, and it was RA Salvatore himself that statted that version of Wulfgar, and obviously that version of Aegis Fang, in Halls of Heroes, an old AD&D handbook for Forgotten Realms setting.

Thanks Bondius for the chainmail. I didn't remember that. And a mithral chainmail seems excellent to me!

Also, in Hall of Heroes (which, you'll have noticed, is my primary source for novel-based stats, mainly because the authors of the novels worked on them) it is said that, by around the end of the Halfling Gem, Cattie-Brie is a 3rd level fighter (with a magic mithral chain mail and a magic dagger, plus Taulmaril) and Regis a 8th level rogue. I don't have statted any of them yet, but I think I'll do it soon.

Ok, this is for the promise I made: my version of Jarlaxle by the end of Promise of the Witch King. I delayed him because there was a huge work of translation to do. I tried to check that everything was ok, but Jarlaxle is really a lot of work.
Ok, after this I swear I won't go Off Topic anymore on this thread.

I have included description for most of Jarlaxle's items because they are unusual. The special wand of shadow evocation is simply a wand with a 5th level spell stored in it.

Jarlaxle: Medium humanoid (drow elf); Ftr5/Rog15; HD 5d10 and 15d6; 80 hp; init. +4; spd. 30 ft; AC 23 (+Combat Expertise and displacement and cape of scintillating colors); Atk. +18/+13/+8/+3 melee (1d4+4 19-20/x2 +3 dagger) and +18 melee (1d4+3 19-20/x2 +3 dagger) or +19/+14/+9/+4 melee (1d4+3 19-20/x2 +2 dagger) or +18/+13/+8/+3 melee (1d4+2 /x2 light hammer) or +19/+19/+14/+8/+4 ranged (1d4+2 19-20/x2 +1 daggers); SA: darkness, faerie fire, dancing lights 1/day, sneak attack +8d6; SQ: immune to magic sleep effects, +2 ST W vs spells and spell like abilities or Enchantment, search secret doors, darkvision 120 ft, SR 31, light blindness, fire resistance 30 (ring), trapfinding, evasion, trap sense +5, uncanny dodge, improved uncanny dodge, skill mastery (appraise, bluff, decipher script, diplomacy, gather information, intimidate, sense motive, use magic device), slippery mind; AL CE; ST F +9 R +14 W +11; Str12 (+1) Dex18 (+4) Con11 (/) Int20 (+5) Wis17 (+3) Cha20 (+5)

Skills and feats: Listen +17, disguise +15 (+17 if observed), Search +19, Knowledge (arcana) +15, Knowledge (local, Menzoberranzan) +15, Decipher Script +15, Diplomacy +22, Disable Device +15, Forgery +15, Intimidate +24, Perform (weapon display) +7, Move Silently +19, Hide +19, Spot +17, Sense Motive +25, Gather Information +29, Bluff +27, Sleight of Hand +16, Open Lock +14, Use Magic Device +27 (+29 for scrolls), Appraise +22; Alertness, Investigator, Two Weapon Fighting, Negotiator, Persuasive, Point Blank Shot, Magical Aptitude, Rapid Shot, Force of Personality, Appraise Magic Value.

Possessions: +3 dagger of extension, +3 dagger of extension, bracer of infinite daggers (+1 daggers) *, eye patch of mind shield, eye patch of fiery fear (24 charges), portable trench, cape of scintillating colors, drow boots *, +5 ring of protection *, orb of languages, orb of healing (8 charges), ring of major fire resistance (fire) *, hat of Jarlaxle *, brooch of the hammer, brooch of shielding (47 charges), piwafwi of superior displacement *, Jarlaxle’s whistle, whistle of Bregan d’Aerthe, wand of lightning bolt (DC14 5d6 30 charges), wand of fireball (DC14 5d6 13 charges), wand of slow (DC14 23 charges), wand of viscid globe (24 charges), special wand of shadow evocation (DC17 17 charges), major ring of spellstoring (dimension door x2), necklace of fireballs type IV *, bag of holding type III (at least 200000 gp), belt of the snake, waistcoat of secrets (skulls of the Witch King).
* - item worn and included in stats.

+3 dagger of extension: upon command, as a move action, this dagger extends to match size either of a longsword or a short sword.

Bracer of infinite daggers: this bracer holds up to five daggers; the wearer can draw a dagger from the bracer with a free action. Each time the dagger is thrown, it acts as if it had the returning special ability, reappearing back in the sheath on the bracers from which it was drawn.

Eye patch of fiery fear: as a wand of fireball and a wand of fear; it has a total of 50 charges upon creation. The wearer chooses which spell to cast with each charge he uses.

Drow boots: as boots of elvenkind. As a special power unique to these boots, the ability may be activated/disactivated as a swift action.

Orb of languages: upon command it casts an effect of comprehend languages in a radius of 20 ft.

Orb of healing: as a wand of cure critical wounds 4d8+7.

Hat of Jarlaxle: as a bag of holding type IV; it’s diatryma feather can be used 1/day to summon a diatryma that serves the wearer [unfortunately I never found stats for a diatryma!], also a patch can be detatched and transformed into a bat that serves the wearer up to 1 hour.

Brooch of the hammer: upon command, as a move action, it becomes a +1 light hammer.

Jarlaxle’s whistle: with a different melody the owner can cast one of the following spells 1/day each: detect magic, banishment, tongues.

Whistle of Bregan d'Aerthe: the sound of this whistle can be heard only by members of Bregan d'Aerthe within 1 mile.

Belt of the snake: upon command it can be transformed into a Medium snake that serves his master; the magical snake can work as a rope of climbing and/or a rope of entanglement.

Waistcoat of secrets: each one of the three golden buttons of this waistcoat acts as a bag of holding type I protected by a nondetection spell.

Skulls of the Witch King: sorry, I don’t have statted them yet! I’ll wait till I have read Road to the Patriarch. Anyway is pretty clear what their primary functions are. They should be artifacts.

Yes, that's for a reason: Artemis is more fight-oriented, while Jarlaxle has a lot of skills (and a lot of social skills). So Jarlaxle's rogue levels try to reflect this.

Where are these feats feom, I don't recall seeing them befoe?
They're from Complete Adventurer.

White Wizard,
I like your Jarlaxle stats they are good. However, I do think you are missing the last book which has a few tidbits that you'd find interesting.
1) A.E. watches Jarlaxle in a tavern fight take on more then a few thugs. A.E. looks down on Jar at first stating that the swashbuckler style he uses is not a very good style. Then Jarlaxle starts doing some of the higher level special abilities of a swashbuckler and A.E. changes his mind.
2) Jarlaxle CASTS spells in RotP.
3) Fighter just doesn't do Jarlaxle justice. Why in the world would he take something that simply gives him an extra 3 feats but goes against EVERYTHING he is. a) heavy armor or shields? no way b) skill points and skills? 2 skill points and terrible skill selection. Swashbuckler gives him weapon finnese, grace (is he anything but), uses his intelligence mod in addition to str mod for extra damage, style, 4 skill points, EVERY skill that Jarlaxle excels in is a class skill, dodge.
4) In the new drow source book they have a fighter variant that drops the access to heavy armor and shield and instead gives fighters extra damage equal to dex mod with attacking something that is denied it's dex bonus.

Anyway, take a look at RotP and you'll see swashbuckler for sure somewhere and the casting of spell(s).

I think he has access to almost any not artifact magic item out there. He's arguably the most connected and powerful drow of Menzo. Plus there is major information about what the priesthood in Menzo thinks/believes Jarlaxle to be in RotP. I recommend you read that book asap for tasty info.

1) A.E. watches Jarlaxle in a tavern fight take on more then a few thugs. A.E. looks down on Jar at first stating that the swashbuckler style he uses is not a very good style.

Thanks for comments, they were most appreciated.
I will answer with correspondant numbers, so it'll be easier to keep track of things.
1) I read that scene and I tried to represent that fact with the skill Perform (weapon display). About the name of the skill I'm not very sure: I took it from Complete Warrior, which I own in a translation, not in original language, so I don't know what's the exact name of the skill. See point 3 for Swashbuckler.

2) Unfortunately Road to the Patriarch still isn't available in my country.

3) In fact Swashbuckler is a fantastic idea. I used fighter simply to stick to the old AD&D write up by RA Salvatore which showed him as a pure fighter. But I think that Swashbuckler class suits him nicely (and gives him more skill points, which is the best for a character like him, way better than the Fighter skill selection).

4) I recently acquired a copy of Drow of the Underdark, unfortunately it was so recently that I hadn't read it on the whole when I posted my write up of Jarlaxle, because I think that the fighter version in that handbook is wonderful both for Jarlaxle and for Drizzt (and even Artemis Entreri could use it, since the rule of being a drow is not very strict: it's the kind of fighting skill that depicts him perfectly). Also the Drizzt of the AD&D Menzoberranzan boxed set showed skills that can be represented by the use of this variant of the fighter class, but I'm going OT, let's stick to Jarlaxle.

Speaking about Jarlaxle magic items I agree with you: if used as NPC the DM should feel free to give him any sort of non-artifact magic item he (the DM) could find useful for the game, and that's also the biggest problem in trying to write down his magic possessions (luckily he doesn't seem to own anything non-magical! :P ). My write up includes (or tries to) magic items he makes display of in the books and those magic items that are showed in his AD&D write-ups. It's far from complete, though, since it's easy to imagine that he still hides a lot of useful items, ready to use them when most needed (and being constantly in search of new magic items, we can easily assume that the number of his magic items is far from fixed).

Isn't Jarlaxle a Swashbuckler?

Isn't Jarlaxle a Swashbuckler?
As I said before:
3) In fact Swashbuckler is a fantastic idea. I used fighter simply to stick to the old AD&D write up by RA Salvatore which showed him as a pure fighter. But I think that Swashbuckler class suits him nicely (and gives him more skill points, which is the best for a character like him, way better than the Fighter skill selection).

My write up was obviously previous to the discussion on this forum. Should I re-write Jarlaxle after what has been said here, I would probably use Swashbuckler/Rogue.
