where did that fighter level come from? no way is sammaster a warrior. he always fought with spell in the book. he almost never engaged in combat in the first place.

the fighter level was souly for the bonus feat and armored mage alternative class feature, which allows him to ignore arcane spell failure in light armor. and i know he never directly engaged in direct combat and always used spells in the year of rogue dragons trilogy, but i was also accounting for the "keepers of the gate" trilogy back when sammaster wasn't a chosen of mystra, he focused on a combination of magic and melee, i'm inclined to think he has a couple levels in spellsword, but i didn't count it in.

I don't see the need for wearing armour, since given his resources, he can easily acquire a set of epic bracers of mage armour or enchanted twillight mithral chainshirt. Or give him auto-still or something. He started off as a wizard's apprentice, so that lv of fighter makes no sense at all (compared to Elminster).

He is also no longer a chosen of mystra, and his 2nd ed stats had him as a lv26th wizard with the benefits of having specialized in necromancy (but without the need to ban 2 schools - to reflect his dedication to the studies of necromancy).

Karasendreith has a short stat block in races of dragon which puts her as a song dragon with lvs in sorc and bard. Dorn is a ranger/fighter. That smoke dragon guy is an advanced smoke drake necromancer with the vampiric dragon template.

Here was Samasters pre-lichdom. This is from the 2nd edition Cult of the Dragon suplement. I am not sure if Dragons of Faerun had an updated version in there.

Sammaster’s abilities at this time are described
below.
Sammaster (hm Nec26): AC 5 (17 DEX, staff of
power) MV 12; hp 45; THAC0 12 (10, staff of power);
#AT 1; Dmg 1d6+2 or 2d6+2 if a charge is expended
(staff of power) or by spell/weapon; SA differing
necromancer powers, necrology and netherworld
knowledge, command undead: SD detect magic, wizard
sight (Tome of Magic), detect invisibility at will, 90-
foot infravision, spell immunities, +2 bonus to all
saving throws (staff of power); SZ M (5’ 10”); AL CE.
S 8, D 17, C 25, I20, W 14, Ch 13.
Special Equipment: staff of power, ring of human influence,
ring of wizardry, potion of evil dragon control (×3),
pearl of power (recalls one 8th-level spell), wings of flying.
Spells*: 13/13/13/7/7/6/6/6/6.
*Including one bonus necromantic spell per spell
level and effects of ring of wizardry (doubles 1st-3rd-level
spells).
Notes: At this point, Sammaster’s extensive researches
into necromancy and undeath qualify him as a
necromancer specialist mage. His unique history and
studies also give him the following special abilities:
Differing Necromancer Powers: Sammaster does not
suffer the usual necromancer penalties that balance the
bonuses a necromancer receives, as in actuality he is a
mage that has gained incredible knowledge of necromancy,
performed twisted ceremonies, and made dark
pacts to gain his unusual abilities. Therefore, he does not
need a 16 Wisdom score, is not restricted from learning
illusion/phantasm and enchantment/charm spells, does
not suffer a -15% penalty when learning spells from
other schools, etc. He does enjoy all the bonuses of the
necromancer specialty (as a way to define some of his
increased abilities in AD&D® game terms).
Necrology and Netherworld Knowledge: Sammaster possesses,
among his numerous nonweapon proficiencies,
extensive knowledge of the undead, the disposition of
spirits after death, and the outer planes. These nonweapon
proficiencies are detailed in The Complete Book of
Necromancers, but effectively, unless something is considered
obscure knowledge in these fields, he knows it.
Command Undead: Sammaster can command undead
creatures as an evil priest of his level.
Spell Immunities: Sammaster is immune to any spell
that drains life energy, traps or moves the spirit to other
places unwillingly, or instantly kills outright in a fashion
not due to accumulated damage, such as: energy drain,
magic jar, death spell, finger of death, trap the soul, power
word, kill, etc.

but, have you accounted for the abilities he uses in the year of rogue dragons book 3 "the ruin" where he uses what is clearly a finger of death spell at a range of about 50ft? that would require arcane reach requiring at least one level of archmage.
