Currently reading the novel Evermeet: Island of Elves. When Zaor and Amlaruil first meet she says they are kin, born of the Moonflower clan. Later on she reveals that they are cousins.

Does anyone know or have a theory on how close of cousins they are? First, second, related through name only (but elves use the cousin "discriptor/title" as an "honorific"?)

Also does this sort of thing happen often? Could you see cousins within elven clans marrying without taboo?

I don't know if there's any specific answer here, but I had GUESSED Amlaruil and Zaor weren't close cousins.

Incest is generally our genes telling us "Hey, this could make bad offspring."

The Elves did not evolve; their genes aren't the same as ours. There's no reason to assume that incest is taboo to them.

Good point, GD--although, like Rinonalyrna Fathomlin, I'd assumed that they weren't very closely related either. They'd never met before, and didn't seem to know all that much about one another--they didn't have any "oh, Aunt so-and-so, sure, she's my great-aunt" kinds of recollections, that kind of thing. But I don't think it's stated anywhere, just the impression I got.

Yeah, that's why I made the assumption I did. Of course, that COULD be wrong, and they could be first cousins (0 times removed!). But when I read the book I was given no reason to think that.

-The Moonflower Clan is also incredibly large. Any Elf who can trace his/her liniage back to Sharlario Moonflower, or any of his decendants, have Moonflower blood within them.

-As to the idea of it being taboo or not...Obviously not. In the actual modern world, those with "royal" blood are constantly marrying those who are distantly related to each other.
