Hi everyone,

My brother is working on making 2 different Dwarven characters and a couple questions came up.

1. Can a Dwarf use a black bear (large) as a mount? He is wanting to make a Bear Warrior that is a druid and has a black bear animal companion as a mount. Any suggestions on a build? I think he is looking at Barbarian3 and Druid3 then Animal Lord to get an advanced animal companion (black bear).

2. How does the Battlesmith (RS) work? This is an Open PrC that requires you to craft a dwarvencraft item, which can't be done in LG? The LGCS says that this can be accomplished by buying the item and then you must enhance it (I think). So the way I see it, you must have Craft Arms and Armor to take the PrC, but the PrC give the same feat for free at level 1?

Thanks,
Bob

A PC can use an animal one size larger than he is as a mount provided he is trained to accept riders. I suggest you check the Handle Animal Skill in the PHB for more info's on that. If i can recall tho, Black bear is a medium animal, brown bear is what you are looking at (too lazy to check in MM :p)

For the Battlesmith, owing a Dwarvencraft item is enough to meet the class pre req. Buying an Item an enchanting it counts as being crafted by you for purpose of adjucating class features bonus. You don't need CAA to get in Battlesmith :)

1. A dwarf could use a black bear as a mount even though it is the same size. There would be a penalty of -5 for having a nonsuitable mount. As a judge, I'd think it's really stupid (probably would think the same if it was a brown bear). But, if it was an animal companion, then I would probably have to allow it.

2. You have to find access to a dwarvencraft item and then purchase it. See the notes in the LGCS.

Barbarian 3/ Druid 3/Beastmaster will get you a Brown Bear.

As will Druid 4/xxx 3 plus access to Natural Bond.

Barbarian 3/Druid 3/Beastmaster 1/xxxx 3 plus natural Bond gets a Polar Bear
