| D.K.R.08-04-07, 05:57 PM | if I take the arcane disciple feat, I basically have spells added to my spell list, and can only cast them once per day. To quote the feat directly, "Add the chosen domain's spells to your class list of arcane spells. If you have arcane spellcasting from more than one class, you must pick which arcane spellcasting ability this feat applies to. Once chosen this decision cannot be changed for that feat. You may learn these spells as normal for your class; however you use your Wisdom (rather than the normal ability for your spellcasting) when determining the save DC for the spell. In addition, you must have a Wisdom score equal to 10 + the spell's level in order to prepare or cast a spell gained from this feat. Each day, you may prepare (or cast, if you cast spells without preparation) a maximum of one of these domain spells of each level." So, my questions are; If I am unable to cast the spells gained (due to insufficient wisdom), can I still use the spells in my spell book or spells known (assuming I added them) to craft scrolls, wondrous items, potions, weapons and armor, and/or wands? If the answer is yes (which I suspect it is), do I actually have to learn the spells, or is having them added to my class list sufficient? Assuming I took the domain of healing, the wands/scrolls I craft are arcane (as I emphasized above) versions of the spell - does that limit others from using them (without UMD)? Bards already have an arcane variant of healing spells available to them, but I have rarely seen a DM require UMD for them to use normal divine scrolls/wands... but then I haven't played in RPGA/LG games yet. What of adding the divine version of a spell which can be both arcane and divine to my class list? Specifically, Identify... this spell costs arcanists 100gp per casting, while divine casters just need their focus. Could I grab the arcane version of a divine version of identify, and no longer need a pearl to cast the spell? And is Identify really a necessary spell in RPGA/LG? Are there any specific domains that are best for this feat? (and if yes, why?) Thanks! |

No, you must be able to cast the spells to craft items with the spell as a requirement, and you must be able to cast it each day of crafting. To craft an item with a spell as a requirement, you must both know the spell AND be able to cast it. While scrolls are specifically divine or arcane, wands are not. Identify is not all that necessary as all items are identified for you at the end of a mod anyway. The only benefit of identify is knowing what the items are in mod. As far as best domains, generally any domains that grant spells you normally can't learn. |
| D.K.R.08-04-07, 07:12 PM | Thanks for the clarification - I just re-read the item crafting section and realized it is only caster-level requirements which are waived in item crafting (and those only in certain cases), not spellcasting requirements. Somehow I had misread that the first time through. Another question on Arcane Disciple. Say I am a specialist wizard and have selected the requisite one or two schools which I am unable to learn spells from. Would this feat let me bypass that in any way? Such as selecting evocation as a banned school, but gaining the spells from the Force domain (almost all evocation)...? |
| Southernskies08-04-07, 10:30 PM | No. Arcane Discipline adds the spells to your wizard spells known (not a separate pool of spells), so if you have them as a banned school, you should probably retrain into a different Domain. |
