Can characters be from Greyhawk City or elsewhere? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I saw that LG characters are allowed to be from Greyhawk after Ruins releases, can we be from there now? Our group is going to try joining the LG campaign this summer (before August) since we have had fun in the Greyhawk World in the past but we don't all necessarily want to be "from" Nyrond.

Are there other options available, like the City of Greyhawk or Celene or someplace, without ruining a character? The campaign guide mentions being from anyplace in The World of Greyhawk, but that there are penalties. We haven't found where or what the penalties are.

What about our friend in Saigon that plays via VC? It says he has to be from Geoff, but he plays with us, in Nyrond? Does that hurt him somehow? Or is his character just "on vacation" or a "business trip" forever in the Nyrond area (aside from core and storebought)?

Any clarification is appreciated. Thanks!! :)

As it stands now, you can make PCs whose backgrounds are from whatever part of the Flaness you want them to be from. They cannot currently be residing in Greyhawk however. When the Greyhawk Ruins source book comes out, expect that the option will be there for PCs that start in a CGY (City of Greyhawk) mod to be able to actually live in Greyhawk. Or at least something to that effect.

I'm not sure what the VC refers to, but if your friend is in Saigon, you may play cores with him remotely, but not NYR or NMR mods.

I think VC is video confrence.

Ok, so we have to live in Nyrond but can be from anyplace. Cool. Thanks Bitznarf :)

VC = Video Conferencing.

I guess from page 4 of the LGCS that counts as "online". It also seems to imply that if 50% of us are in Nyrond, then we can run Nyrond adventures and include him... but I have to send the AR's to 'Nam for him, right? And his character's "residence" has to be in Geoff, even though he'll be adventuring in cores and Nyrond?

So, there aren't currently any penalties to worry about? right?

His address in the RPGA database has to be within Nyrond for him to play Nyrond mods through a video confrence system or the like.

His characters residence can be from wherever he wants it to be, same with your PCs. You are just more likely to play mods within your physical region (Nyrond in your case, Geoff in his) and thus will get more benefit from having 'in region' PCs rather than out of region PCs. You can play a PC who lives in Zeif (my region) but for whatever reason spends most of his time around Greyhawk (Core mods) and Nyrond. It would be slightly silly in my opinion, but you could do it. Your PC would effectively be travelling back to Zeif after every mod. Zeif is in the far NW part of the Flaness if you're not sure.

From a meta-game perspective, the only penalties that I am aware of are the extra TUs that need to be spent on each 'out of region' mod. I am referring the the PCs region here, not the players region. In game, some groups will like you less if you 'aren't from around here' or things like that. Some groups may like you more, etc.

I figured I would expand on my last post. As a player, you have a region. That region is determined by where you physically live. That region's triad is your triad. You can order adventures from your region, and the meta-region that your region belongs to.

As a PC, you can be from anywhere. It just takes you longer to 'reach the adventure' if you are playing Nyrond mods with a PC from someplace like Ratik or Zeif.

The player's region and the PC's region are in no way related to each other, they are totally independent. A PC is just more likely to get more benefits if he is from the region he plays the most mods in.

More specifically: a PC has to live in a player-controlled region, unless campaign documentation says otherwise.
So, I can have a PC living in Ekbir, The Bandit Kingdoms, or Keoland, because those are player controlled regions.
I cannot live in Tehn, Geyhawk City, or the Valley of the Mage, because those are not.
There are three exceptions (that I am aware of):
- PC that started their career in the Blight on Bright Sands scenario, could choose the Bright Sands as their home region
- A snow elf, craeted with a special RPGA campaign card, MUST have the crystalmists as his home region.
- I expect that PC that start their career in the Greyhawk Ruins intro scenario, can choose Greyhawk City as their home region

Playing a regional from a region where your PC lives costs 1 TU per round.
Playing another regional costs 2 TU per round.

You can only play regionals in the geographical area associated with that region. So you can only play Ekbir mods in France, for instance.

But that is a choice. i.e. Most of my PCs do not live in Sunndi as I cannot play Sunndi mods anyway. Some regions may simply be cooler to have your PC 'be from' - if you don't mind the extra TU, it may be worth it.

... but I have to send the AR's to 'Nam for him, right?

Yes, although you can scan the signed AR, and then send him an electronic copy, which he can then print out.

And his character's "residence" has to be in Geoff, even though he'll be adventuring in cores and Nyrond?

Not necessarily. As gomeztoo notes, you can pick any Triad-controlled region as the home region for your PC (and, there are a few other options, if you have the documentation). By default, his PC's home region would be Geoff, but he could choose to make it Nyrond, or the Pale, or any other Triad-controlled region.

And, if you're going to be playing Nyrond regionals with him via teleconference, there'd be advantages to him choosing Nyrond as his home region, from the standpoint of TU costs. He'd also likely have better eligibility for Nyrond metaorgs; I'm not sure about Nyrond, but here in Verbobonc, the metaorgs play a significant part in our regional modules, and it may be worthwhile for his (and, for that matter, all of your) PCs to be members of Nyrond metaorgs.

Each of the players has a region, based upon their place of residence; it isn't something you can choose, generally, although you can take a point of view if you are temporarily somewhere else (student, miltary, work assignment, etc). Each player character may have a home region, which can be anywhere. You may use VC to play all cores, core specials, and adapted mods with you buddy in 'Nam. To play NYR regionals with him, the player's place of residence needs to be in Nyrond (SoCal, AZ, UT). If he is temporarily in Saigon, he can keep Nyrond as his place of residence, and thus play NYR mods.

I think you meant to say "player character" with that last "player".

Oh, he's not temporarily there. He moved there in order to live like a king with servants and stuff after selling his CA house, lol  But he still games with us regularly, not people local to Saigon, being from SoCal and possessing advanced (American) technology.

The only trouble is during the rainy season the internet there floods sometimes so occassionally we get cut off. Usually it's just like having him in the room though.

Well, that's one trouble. The other is we may only be able to play cores from LG :(

Is there, or will there be, anything resembling DM's marks for LG?

Also, thanks for the good info :)

If he lives in Saigon, then unfortunately he cannot play Nyrond modules via teleconferencing.

You can only join a table playing a regional or metaregional via teleconference if you live in a place assigned to that region - that is if your registered with the RPGA address is in that region.

You can, however, play Cores, home-play Core Specials and Adapted modules online or via teleconferencing without a problem.

Although this last point isn't helpful for you playing more games as a group, but he can now join existing real-world Geoff tables taking place in the Geoff areas of the US or in any other area of the world that isn't specifically assigned to a region. This is, though, the only way he can play regionals online.

No, there isn't, and I don't think it's ever been discussed. DM's Marks were developed to give the D&D Campaign players more play opportunities without making those campaign staffs write more modules. Given that LG modules have a completely different retirement structure, the need isn't there in the same way.

Note that, from what I've heard, the LG High Level Campaign modules are very similar to DM's marks (ie. the module you get is just a bare-bones story/encounter outline, which the DM then fleshes out and customizes to the party he/she is running for). I don't have a high-enough level PC to play in the HL Campaign though, so this is all just from hearsay.

Yes, that's essentially true.

High level adventures will be something to look forward too I suppose. Assuming we can get enough core and adapted adventures to make it that high :)
