I'm new to this whole world wide campaign thing so I'm a little confused about how it works. I was wondering what level new characters start at. Sorry if this is against the rules or something.

Thanks in advance.

All LG characters start with 0 XP. To get ramped up, you should read the "LGCS" which is a document which covers among other things, character creation for this campaign.

I would advise you to consider where you will be playing the most. I find if you going to be playing pick-up games at cons, you may want ratchet up the powergame quotient a bit. If you'll be playing in a home group more often there seems to be more room for characters that are not optemized.

Either way, you can decide on the APL you want to play often enough where you don't need to have the optemized character to survive. Despite how things may look here on the forums, not every character is maxed-out for death and some roleplay does occur.

By all means, play what you are comfortable playing but, filling a needed role will make you more popular with your fellow players and general durability will probably keep you a happier player.

There's only one way to have a high-level character. Start at first level, and earn it, bucko.

Incidentally, this means that 6th level characters are about a year old, and 10th level characters are about two years old, and 14th level characters are about three years old.

Now, you might be thinking "Who of this mighty cohort will want to play with little ol' me?" Don't worry. Because there is a limited amount of time you can play a character, (see time units in the LGCS) those who started before you/have more free time than you do will generally have MORE characters.

So, instead of playing my 13th level rogue/ranger with your 1st level rogue, I'll play my 1st level fighter with your 1st level rogue, and we'll undoubtedly get hired to protect a caravan from goblin bandits, or fight giant rats in the sewer.

Later on, mods can start with people teleporting in and saying "My undersea kindgom is beseiged by sea giants, can you help us? You are our only hope." Having to work your way up to that makes it that much more special.

..or more likely you will save the Oerth on your first adventure and do pest control at level 12 :D
