| Gaelforcwynd02-09-07, 04:37 AM | I'm starting a Human Cleric in my first LG game on Sunday. I've been thinking about what to go with. I have long been seduced by the Magic and Travel domains, but realistically, half their spells are pretty useless. I want to play a decent combat/buffing Cleric, not a turning one. I've also been starting to like the Celerity, Liberation and War domains. A few deities with interesting combinations of these and other decent domains are Fharlangn, Lirr and Tritherion. I like to keep a 3rd domain in mind for if I should have the opportunity to gain a level of the Contemplative PrC later. I still like the Travel domain, so I started looking at the other domains of the deities who offer it. I found one particularly interesting example in Kelanen. He only offers the Travel and War domains, which if I want to go for the Contemplative PrC later, poses the question about which extra domain I could take, if any. I guess it would be an alignment based one. Kelanen has several interesting attributes. His followers may only wield daggers, swords and crossbows. They are almost exclusively, but not strictly, Neutral. His Weapon of the Deity is a +1 Keen Longsword (doubles theat range - 17-20 critical). You can take a Weapon Specialisation and Weapon Focus in any martial sword. So.. Human Cleric 1 of Kelanen (Travel, War) STR: 12 (+1) - longsword (later masterwork, +2 etc.) DEX: 12 (+1) - scale or chain mail, buckler (later full or heavy plate) CON: 14 (+2) - (later amulet of health) INT: 10 (0) - who cares WIS: 16 (+3) - keep bumping this to 18 (later periapt of wisdom maybe) CHA: 10 (0) - Knowledge(Religion), Eagle's Splendour (magic item later) Or 10 STR, 14 DEX. Or 10 STR and DEX, 14 CHA. Or 8 INT and CHA, 15 STR or DEX, bumped to 16 at 3rd bump. Concentration - 4 ranks Healing - 4 ranks* Knowledge (Religion): 4 ranks Spellcraft - 4 ranks* *whichever Improved Initiative^ Scribe Scroll^ Skill Focus - Knowledge(Religion) Weapon Specialisation - Longsword# Weapon Focus - Longsword# ^unsure #bonus (not sure how the +1 base attack bonus requirement for the Weapon Focus feat works at 1st level with the War domain..) So ya, I like the idea of a longsword wielding Cleric with some decent battlefield spells. What do you guys think? |
| bhale18702-09-07, 08:06 AM | The weapon Specialization is news to me. A few things to think about -with 12 STR and full plate it will not take much gear before you are heavy encumberance -Craft wonderous item is very important to clerics in LG, especially since you can never be sure what items you might get access to in ARs -war and travel are 2 great domains, especially for a combat cleric, but if you are looking for a third later you might try Heironeous or St Cuthbert -I think you would have a tough sell on any alignment outside of Nuetral since it flat out states this is an intentional disregard for your dieties teachings |
| Gaelforcwynd02-09-07, 08:58 AM | The weapon Specialization is news to me A few things to think about Oops my mistake, I mean Weapon Proficiency. -with 12 STR and full plate it will not take much gear before you are heavy encumberance I thought that extra mundane equipment didn't have much effect on your encumbrance unless it was a large object. If what you have stated is true though, I could put more points into STR anyway. Besides, both medium and heavy armour make a Human move at 20'. Okay so with heavy load I can only run at triple speed, but I can live with that. -Craft wonderous item is very important to clerics in LG, especially since you can never be sure what items you might get access to in ARs Agreed, I would take that at 3rd level, which is the requirement. -war and travel are 2 great domains, especially for a combat cleric, but if you are looking for a third later you might try Heironeous or St Cuthbert But they don't offer the Travel or other cool domains. The Strength domain is good, but if I was going to take that domain I would choose Zuoken or Fharlanghn as my patron deity, because they have other cool domains to choose from. If I chose them I could take the Celerity, Protection or Strength domains, or all of them if I gained access to the Contemplative PrC later. -I think you would have a tough sell on any alignment outside of Nuetral since it flat out states this is an intentional disregard for your dieties teachings Why is Neutral bad? I can still turn undead and choose which axis my spells will affect. I can still spontaneously cast healing spells can't I? |
| bhale18702-09-07, 09:38 AM | nothing bad about neutral, I just mistook your OP, I thought you were getting a the idea of taking something other than neutral with Kelanen. agreed on travel, it is my favorite domain, magic is a close second I suggested Heironeous and St Cuthbert because as a combat cleric the shining blade makes a cool PrC also, I thought you could only take the domains expressed in the dietites description, therefore a 3rd domain owuld be wasted on Kelanen (although I have certainly been wrong before) |

I'm a big Magic and Travel fan too! This could be love.. :P My original choice was a Human Cleric of Lirr with Magic and Travel. |
| bhale18702-09-07, 09:49 AM | sry to get off topic, but i saw you are from western Australia. Are you close to the famous Wolf Creek Crater? |
| Gaelforcwynd02-09-07, 01:38 PM | sry to get off topic, but i saw you are from western Australia. Are you close to the famous Wolf Creek Crater? Nope, that's in the very northeast quarter of the state of Western Australia. I live in Perth, the capital city, which is in the southwest. I didn't know about that crater until now. How interesting. If you've read any Lovecraft you will have heard about the Pilbarra region which is mentioned in his story The Shadow out of Time. Also, Western Australia (Shark Bay) is the home to one of the oldest fossils of living creatures in the world. They are 3.5 billion year old stromatolite deposits. That's pretty cool hey. :) I'm a big fan of prehistory though, I have some interesting books on the formation of continents and oceans. One of which you might be interested in is ORIGINS: The formation of Oceans, Continents and Life by Ron Redfern. Ancient stuff fascinates me, as I'm sure it does a lot of you D&D fans. Check it out. Which brings me to the subject of dinosaurs. Now they were REAL monsters! ;) |
| Iswald02-10-07, 12:51 AM | The weapon Specialization is news to me. Instead of cleric, favored soul could be used. Since they gain weapon specialization, they could then take weapon mastery? |
| Gaelforcwynd02-10-07, 12:26 PM | nothing bad about neutral, I just mistook your OP, I thought you were getting a the idea of taking something other than neutral with Kelanen. agreed on travel, it is my favorite domain, magic is a close second I suggested Heironeous and St Cuthbert because as a combat cleric the shining blade makes a cool PrC also, I thought you could only take the domains expressed in the dietites description, therefore a 3rd domain owuld be wasted on Kelanen (although I have certainly been wrong before) Ok well I'm not that pushed about possibly taking the Contemplative PrC in future. So this is what I've decided on for the game I'm playing today. Male N Human Cleric 1 of Kelanen (Travel, War) STR: 14(+2) - longsword DEX: 10(0) - buckler, scale mail CON: 14 (+2) INT: 10(0) WIS: 16(+3) - bonus 1st-3rd level spells, bonus 4th level spell at CL 8 CHA: 10(0) Concentration: 4 ranks Knowledge(Religion): 4 ranks Spellcraft: 4 ranks Skill Focus(Concentration) Scribe Scroll Martial Weapon Proficiency(longsword) Weapon Focus(longsword) Detect Magic x 2, Read Magic Bless, Protection from Evil: Magic Weapon I thought about making DEX or CHA 12 and WIS 15 but then I would have to wait until 12th level instead of 8th for a bonus 4th level spell. I am kind of wasting one of my stat bumps the way I'm going, but I might gain a +1 stat boosting item later which will even it off. Should I take the Improved Initiative feat instead of Skill Focus(Concentration)? I also thought of taking 2 ranks in Healing and 2 in Spellcraft to get a bonus on Heal checks earlier in my career. Depending on whether I can find a PrC that requires more than 5 ranks in Knowledge(Religion), I will probably only have 5 ranks in that skill. Then I will focus on Concentration, Healing and Spellcraft. 5 ranks in Knowledge(Arcana) wouldn't be bad either if I can afford the points at some stage. I'll take Craft Wondrous Items as my next feat. |
| clannagh02-11-07, 11:57 PM | . I'll take Craft Wondrous Items as my next feat. Also consider Domain Spontaniety Travel |
| Gaelforcwynd02-12-07, 03:52 AM | Also consider Domain Spontaniety Travel Someone at the game told me about those Domain Spontaneity feats and they sound cool. I don't have the sourcebooks for them, so I hadn't taken them into consideration. I did decide on the 2 ranks in Heal and 2 ranks in Spellcraft so I could join the Aid Auszugen (Fighting forces of Perrenland) at the end of the regional we played. It required 2 ranks in Heal and I am now a member of it. I also gained access and can afford a Masterwork longsword, so I'll have a +4 attack bonus (+2 STR, +1 Weapon Focus feat, +1 Masterwork) and a +2 to damage (+2 STR). I also have enough cash to scribe 4 spells. I will choose Cure Light Wounds x 2, Remove Fear and Summon Monster I. |
| Gaelforcwynd02-12-07, 03:53 AM | Instead of cleric, favored soul could be used. Since they gain weapon specialization, they could then take weapon mastery? I don't have access to the CD at present. Off the top of my head, I think Weapon Mastery requires Fighter 4th?. |
| bhale18702-12-07, 07:57 AM | Pre Req is +8 BAB, Wp Focus, and Wp specialization |
