| Shieldhart9103-20-07, 04:59 PM | My Ftr4/Pal1/KnP1 has recently acquired his cohort, on which I am deciding to make my character's cohort either his brother or his wife. That being said, I wanted a buff cohort that could enhance my abilities as much as possible. So far...I've come up with this... Sorcerer 4 Medium Humanoid (Human); HD 4d4+4; hp 20 Init +2; Spd 30 ft/x4 AC 12 (+2 dex), touch 12, flat-footed 10 Base Atk/Grapple: +2/+1 Full Atk +5 (Ray) SA/SQ: Familiar (Toad) AL LG; SV Fort +2, Ref +3, Will +4 Str 8, Dex 14, Con 13, Int 12, Wis 10, Cha 16 Skills: Bluff +10, Concentration +8, Knowledge (arcana) +8, Spellcraft +10. Feats: Weapon Focus (Ray), Ranged Spell Specialization, Sudden Extend Any ideas? My selections aren't limited to anything specific; but keep in mind we gotta use the Elite Array and I have around 3,000 gp to toy around with regarding this guy. I want a buffer, arcane OR divine (doesn't matter)- but I want something with Buff Primary, Blast or Battlefield Control Secondary. |
| Jay_Ibero_91103-20-07, 05:54 PM | Here's a possibility: Race:Human Alignment: STR-10 DEX-13 CON-14 INT-15 WIS-12 CHA-8 Transmuter Specialist (Ban enchantment+???) Lv1(Wizard)Scribe Scroll, Metamagic School Focus (Transmutation), Rapid Spell Lv2(Wizard) Lv3(Wizard)Acidic Splatter Lv4(Wizard)+1 INT Prepare up to 3 rapid enlarge persons without level adjustment, and have Acidic Splatter for infinite blasting as needed. Enlarge as a standard action is nice. |

| cycloptic_squirrel03-21-07, 12:56 AM | Shieldhart, I think it'd help if you told us what your character does, does well, and what you want the cohort to supplement. Otherwise we're just guessing. My assumptions are thus: You are a spirited charger who wants a cohort who can aid him in pumping the spirited charge damage through the roof, as well as being able to boost in non-mount situations. Your skill set is low so anything your cohort can bring to the table in that regard is appreciated. Someone who can use a happy stick is a benefit so for the rare table where the wand wielder is expected to take cleric duty. While it is your cohort, you realize that bringing a cohort that benefits the entire table is greatly appreciated and other people will be pleased when they find out your cohort is joining. With these considerations in mind, what do you think of this guy? I see him more as a mentor type, who tells you how to do things better; also allowing for a dramatic moment where you swear revenge if and when he is cut down before your eyes. But that's just how I see it. It could easily be an older brother or doting wife. LG Human Str 15 Dex 8 Con 13 Int 14 Wis 10 Cha 15 1: Bard 1 - Melodic Casting, Skill focus: Use Magic Device 2: Bard 2 3: Marshal 1 - Extra Music 4: Marshal 2 - bump Cha 16 spells known: 0) detect magic, know direction, prestidigitation, message 1) inspirational boost, feather fall Marshal minor aura: Over the Top Major Aura: Motivate Attack Skills: perform drumming (3), perform sing (max), use magic device (max), spellcraft (5), decipher script (5), knowledge religion (max), Listen (max), others suit to taste Major Equipment: small mithril shield/buckler, chain shirt +1, guisarm, silvered mace, cold iron rapier, longbow & arrows, warhorse (make sure the DM notes you have no/few ranks in ride, so it probably won't count against your APL), 300 gp of useful scrolls So pretty much your first round is inspirational boost, sing, move up so that your target is well within 60 of your cohort. Your turn - charge, with +3 to hit and +5 to damage. If you can find a memento, you can do this every combat. A UMD of +13 (+17 for scrolls), (which becomes +19(+23) at fifth) means he can use almost any scroll he can get his hands on. Do buy him a cloak of charisma, happy stick, and wand of enlarge person. He can't buy them, but you can and just lend them to him every session. You won't regret it. If you get access to a masterwork drum, grab it; it'll make your inspire courage go up by one damage. A few low level scrolls can be used for battlefield control (grease, entangle, obscuring mist, even silent image if used correctly). And this is how I see him leveling 5: Marshal 3 (minor aura: charisma) 6: Marshal 4 - Skill Focus: Knowledge Religion 7: Divine Oracle 1 8: Divine Oracle 2 - Prescient Sense 9: Lyric Thaumaturge 1 - Insert Cool Feat Here 10: Lyric Thaumaturge 2 11: Lyric Thaumaturge 3 12: Sublime Chord 1 - Insert Cool Feat Here 13: Sublime Chord 2 If you ever feel you can afford to buy him mithril full plate, retrain UMD focus for Battle Caster. It's a bit complex, but you wouldn't be losing too much if you simplified it to Marshal 3-4, Bard 3-9. I actually have no experience with Marshal 4 and the ability to grant a move action, but I see it as pretty powerful. So this is pretty much a straight up buffer. Not much in the way of personal power, but he'll pump you up. |
| LachlarlanIII03-21-07, 09:58 AM | Just make sure you name him Sancho. |
| kenobi6503-21-07, 12:26 PM | Str 15 Dex 8 Con 13 Int 14 Wis 10 Cha 15 I'm guessing the "Str 15" is meant to be "Str 12"... |
| ithardin03-21-07, 05:25 PM | I was just thinking that a Knight's cohort would be a PC that also didn't use tactics a Knight would consider "dishonorable," so that might influence your decisions. I mean who would stick around with a cohort who you always had to chide for being dishonorable, and what cohort would put up with that constant degrading? |
| ithardin03-21-07, 05:27 PM | Perhaps the cohort is a would-be chronicler of the great and mighty deeds of the Knight, kind of his PR department and herald. That might be tremendous fun. Just imagine your cohort as the Chaucer character from "A Knight's Tale" introducing his Knight in each new town they went to, etc. |
| cycloptic_squirrel03-21-07, 09:37 PM | I'm guessing the "Str 15" is meant to be "Str 12"... Oops. Good catch. I copied the template from another thread and forgot to change everything except Charisma, which is the important one. Everything else can be switched to taste, but I'd probably go with Str 10 Dex 13 Con 14 Int 12 Wis 8 Cha 15 |
| Shieldhart9103-21-07, 11:03 PM | I can't take Spirited Charge or Ride-By Attack for a while. I am... Ftr4/Pal1/KnP1 Str 16, Dex 12, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 14 HP: 52 AC: 20 (+1 Full-Plate, +1 Dex) Fort +8, Ref +2, Will +3 Melee: +9/+4 Ranged: +7/+2 Leadership, Mounted Combat, Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave, Weapon Focus and Weapon Spec (Greatsword) That Bard/Marshall idea doesn't sound bad. I might go with that. I often try to get as many buffs before charging in, power attacking for full with 2d6+17 without buffs, although Bulls' Strength gives me a 2d6+21, and Enlarged + Bulls = 2d6+23, and more with other buffs. Those are just the common ones. I have the hit points to stand up (most of the time). Might I ask what the negative dex is for? I think str/wis shouldn't as important as Dex. |
| cycloptic_squirrel03-22-07, 06:57 AM | A straight up cleric with flame of faith and enlarge (strength domain) might be up your alley. I think he'd give you a lot more versitility, but not as much raw damage; at least until recitation/rightous wrath of the faithful kick in. If you're sticking with the bard/marshal, I might consider switching Over the Top for Master of Tactics, as you can usually flank more often than you can charge. By level six or so, he can probably start to grab a scroll of haste to use once a mod. If you're good at multitasking and are clever with your spells, I'd go the cleric. If you want a cohort who's actions are pretty simple, yet adds a lot to your power, I'd take the bard/marshal. |
| Shieldhart9103-22-07, 05:32 PM | This is what I have so far... Sancho Shieldhart: Male Human (Suel) Ex-Bard 2/Msh2; CR 4; Medium Humanoid (Human); HD 2d6+2d8+4; hp 24; Init +1; Spd 20 ft/x4 AC 17 (+6 armor, +1 Dex), touch 11, flat-footed 16 Base Atk/Grapple +2/+2; Full Atk +3 One-handed (1d3;20/x2, masterwork whip), +3 Two-handed (1d8;20/x2, Longbow); SQ: Can cast bard spells while wearing medium armor without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance, Bardic Knowledge (Ex), Bardic Music (Countersong, Fascinate, Inspire Courage, Auras) AL LG; SV Fort +4, Ref +4, Will +5 Str 10, Dex 12, Con 13, Int 14, Wis 8, Cha 16 Skills: Decipher Script +7, Diplomacy +13, Knowledge (arcana) +4, Knowledge (history) +4, Knowledge (nobility) +6, Knowledge (religion) +9, Perform (Sing) +10, Perform (Drums) +10, Spellcraft +6, Use Magic Device +13 Feats: Skill Focus (Diplomacy, UMD), Battle Caster, Extra Music Comments? |
| cycloptic_squirrel03-22-07, 06:23 PM | Looks solid. What are you going with for your auras? |
| Shieldhart9103-22-07, 07:13 PM | Master of Tactics and Motivate Attack. Allows more room for power attacking, and I often find myself in the company of a rogue: he'll love me forever. Heh. If not Master of Tactics, I could use Over the Top. I do charge quite often. |
