I'm writing a special mission for an Arcane Heirophant who wants a 'cool' companion familiar. Any suggestions?

Definitely a dropbear. Barring that, a haggis.

Or a Gazebo.

Yeah, a gazebo works too!

Damn your witticisms!

Gah, where's Oscar Wilde when you need a comeback? :P

I so want to see a dropbear in a PER mod now. Vampiric Dropbear. Oh yeah, Drelnza's pet!

You know that's like waving a red rag at a bull don't you? Even worse, I'll get Patrick onto it!
Britt

Did you know bulls are colorblind? The red doesn't do anything; it's just the motion. Random trivia :p

I would so approve a vampiric dropbear. There's got to be a monster with stats that could be adapted, then just add the Drop (Ex) attack to it, where it does double damage on a drop attack. Give it really good hide, or bluff, so it looks all cute and cuddly. Then Bam!

And wouldn't Patrick rather do the Haggis? I need someone to do that. If Patrick won't, I need to talk to Creighton.

I think Iuz better stop playing around in Acheron, his metaregion is about to get a wee bit more weird than even he could handle... :D

More info on the character please: Race, Sex, climate where he lives...

..not sure if its allowed.. but planar handbook has a "wood elemental" template that would make an AWSOME companion creature out of any typical creature.. since now the companion could have "spike" spells cast on its natural weapons...

No, no, that's just a joke. Dropbears are REAL!

Read Terry Pratchett's "The Last Continent" for the dropbear legend, and the best defence against them... and yeah, I wouldn't expect many non-Aussies to get this joke ;)

(For the bewildered: dropbears are basically dire koalas that attack people by falling out of trees onto them. They are mythical Australian beasties that we frighten foreigners with - or at least, that's what they want you to think ;) )

A drop bear, come on. I have been trying to get a squirrel for my animal companion for 2 years.

I would consider a heavily-reinforced, pointy, wizard's hat to be standard gear if I were hiking in the wilds of Australia.

Well the female player wanted her female arcane heirophant from Perrenland to get access to a unicorn companion familiar. Since that isn't allowable, I'm looking for potential alternatives. I believe the unicorn was sought because of the 'coolness' factor, not for use as a mount...

there was an LG mod that under special circumstances allowed a unicorn as a special mount or animal companian .. cannot say more as the mod may still be current (about to expire if it is)

nevertheless there is some precedent for unicorns

I believe companion familiars have to be an animal (not magical beast) before adding the extra stuff. Different from the cohort access I think you may be talking about...

The only exception to the animal companions have to be animals, that I know of, is the elvish hound in RoW. I'm not that familiar with Arcane Heirophant, though, so it might allow it.

I'm not sure, but i believe that magical beasts are potential animal companions.. provided their Int falls within the animal range(1-2).

Brixashulty (Races of the Wild) Add the Warbeast template(MM2)... and.. if you can get away with it.. add Wood Elemental Template (Manual of the planes).

Brixashulty
2d8+6 HD (16hp) +3 Init, 40' move, AC 16 (+3 dex, +3 natural), +1 BA/+2 Grapple, Gore +2 melee (1d6+1), SA: Knockback, SQ: low light vision, scent, Fort +7, Ref +7, Will +2, stats (13, 17, 16, 2, 13, 4) Balance +5, Jump +10, Listen +5, Spot +3, Feats: Endurance...

Warbeast
HD+1, +10' move, Combative Mount (armor proficiencies, +2 ride checks), str+3, Con+3, Wis+2, -1 listen/spot

Wood Elemental
+2 Nat armor, 1/2 ground speed, spikes(120' range, 4/rd 1d6+str HD/day max), Elemental, Darkvision, Plant, Woodscense(locate anything incontact with vegitation in 60'), *Now you can cast Spikes on the creatures natural weapons :)

Other good choices:

Chordevoc (Races of the Wild) is prob a great choice for a companion.. Tiny bird with blindsense.. and fly by attack...

Corollax (mm2) is kinda cool, color spray, DR, Darkvision, SR

Phase Wasp (mm2) Magic missile & see invisible

Moonrat (mm2) is interesting (bonus Str/Int based on moons phase).

Gravorg (mm2) reverse gravity...

MM2 has some scary animals.. Blood Ape, Legendary animals, Rampager, Razor Boar

you may be right .. our party didnt get the access so I never looked closely into it

i have seen pc's riding about on unicorns though .. most likely cohorts as you point out :)

Hopefully those with the unicorn Cohort, Cohort/Paladin mount, dont bring it to tables of 6 pcs....

They better be human or elven female maidens...

on a side not: never play leapfrog with a unicorn.

There is a feat in Book of Exalted Deeds that lets you take various magical beasts for animal companions, and unicorn is on there. You could possibly grant access to that feat instead. That or look for animals that already have a listed druid level to take as animal companions. Like in the enviromental books, MM3, etc.

Hmm, that's the best idea I've heard in a while.

Good one...
