This is a two-parter:

1) I don't want to know what mod from what region, but what sort of mod would give access to dinosaur animal companions? Does a certain region have a large population of large reptiles? What should I look for in a mod that may give Dino access. Short of a menagerie running loose I don't know how I would get a Dino in Nyrond.

2) Why are vermin not allowed as animal companions? I want to take the root walker alternate class feature which allows me to interact with vermin like I would with animals, but why can't I have one as a loyal companion? I know, INT 0 and all that, but surely a master of nature could develop a way of establishing a rapport without requiring the creature to be intelligent. Oh, and why are rats considered animals and not vermin? It's kinda hurting my build to have this sort of dungeony/subterranean/sewer druid with a wolf.

Thanks for the posts.

Short answer: I don't think you'll ever be able to find access either dino or vermin companions before LG is over.

[...] Oh, and why are rats considered animals and not vermin? It's kinda hurting my build to have this sort of dungeony/subterranean/sewer druid with a wolf. [...]Probably because rats demonstrate intelligence, and/or because the game designers designated their type as animal. The vermin type, with few exceptions (centipede, scorpion, and spider) are all insectile in nature, lacking what we would typically consider intelligence.

May I recommend the badger or dire rat instead? The former is a burrowing creature, and well suited to underground environments, while the latter is very appropriate for sewer excursions...

Ya those two would fit but they're just so darn weak. I don't want to powergame too much, but part of the fun for me is in succeeding. It's hard for me to choose a weaker creature for roleplaying reasons. I guess that's why most everyone has a wolf or a crocodile.

Anyone think I have a chance of petitioning my Triad for a medium spider?

The oddity is that while you can't have a dinosaur animal companion, the only restriction on it for the Wild Shape ability is "The form chosen must be that of an animal the druid is familiar with".

So if you're an Olman druid from the Amedio Jungle (like my now-retired character was), you can justifiably say you're familiar with dinosaurs.

:D
