Why is everyone so gung-ho to have their druids take the Craft Wondrous Item feat at 3rd level?

If I'm not mistaken, only the following items are eligible to be crafted at that level:
bag of tricks, gray
dust of tracelessness
horn of fog
elixir of swimming
pipes of the sewers
unguent of timelessness

You'd need access to create the following items:
armbands of might (CAd)
blessed bandage (HB)
cloak of elemental protection (MH)
collar of obedience (CAd)
drums of marching (HB)
everfull sails (Sto)
lamp of stars (Sa)
magic sleeping bag (MH)
replenishing skin (Sa)
scarf of warmth (CAd)
spellsight spectacles (CAd)
stylus of the masterful hand (CAd)
tunic of steady spellcasting (CAd)

Now, that's certainly not a short list, but there's not a whole lot there that screams "Druids must have me or perish at their foolishness!"

Personally I have no idea. My druid does not have it and given that he is level twelve, is unlikely to ever get it. As you said, apart from a few particular items like periapts and maybe cloaks, what does a druid need items for. Ok, so pearls are handy, but you can get buy without them, or save for them.

Because at 6th level they take natural spell.

And the list between 6th level and 9th level is a lot more compelling.

Yes, but considering once you take natural spell, you spend most of your time in animal form for the hit points, when are you going to use the Wonderous Items you make?

Sure, you can't make much at 3rd level, but as soon as you make 5th level, you can craft a cloak of resistance +1 and four pearls of power, 1st level, for 1 TU, 200 XP, and 2500 GP. That's an investment well worth making

Well, My druid took it at 6th, because he took heavy armor proficiency at 3rd cause he got access to dragonhide full plate. At 9th he took Stone Form from races of stone. He is loaded with wondrous items at this point. At 12th he will take forge ring to save 10k on a ring of freedom of movement. Late he will probably use it crafting each of the energy resist rings, cause it never hurts to have unlimited energy protection of any given type...He'll also be crafting a cube of frost resistance just because he can, and I think it's a neat item to have. And loads of pearls of power. And upgrading his periapt of wisdom. And making whatever else I feel like because I can and I like the idea of being a toy shop. My druid stands to lose to much by wildshaping really. Maybe if I ever got wild armor access I would use it more, but I like my AC and my toys.

just saving a meager 10k??? not enough to burn 4 TUs on it :), unless you want to get rid of some xp as well, 4 TUs can earn you some 2500 to 5000 gp at APL 12, so the actuall save isn't as big and gets even less when playing APL 14. of course when it is a second or third character you tend to have unused TUs anyway.

Am I correct in my understanding that, even if an item costs less than 2500 gp, if it is not from the DMG, then I must have access to craft it? I.e., it must appear in the Items Found section...

Anyone know of any good tools that will let you input a class and caster level, then get back a list of craftable items?
