Hi guys and gals

I'm making a new character , i have a bad feeling my Orc Fighter Paladin wanabe will die soon , and i was wondering is Point blank shot and presise shot worth it ( having acces to Bow and all ) ? I would use lots of range touch spells if i take them but with the reserve feats available ( at least some ) i'm even less sure its worth it . I would loove some feed back on this . I added my stats if that helps .

You would always build towards spellwarp sniper and be a ray specialist.

Not sure about the caster lvl loss . On the other hand , i was thinking War weaver but i dont know if its legal in LG . and we already have a Warmage in our regular party ...

They're pretty useful at low levels but less so at higher levels (when most touch ACs stagnate or sink as your BAB and bonuses rise). Fortunately you can now take them and Retrain.

With that Int I'd concentrate on Save-or-X spells though.
Sleep, Grease and Colour Spray are the triumvirate to rule them all at first level.

PB and Precise are useful but I'd still go with Empower and Sculpt every time.

Are you point totals correct? IIRC, 2+4+6+16+2 = 30.

I'd lower your INT, particularly if you are using ray spells and put at least two more points into Dex.

It's worth noting that since Elves get free martial weapon proficiency (longbow), Point-blank and Precise Shot also allow you to do something after your spell slots are used for the adventure.

Furthermore, they're useful if you build a dedicated ray-casting wizard (a viable option). Such a build might look something like:

Gray Elf wizard
Str 12
Dex 16
Con 12
Int 18
Wis 8
Cha 8

1st - Point-blank; spells: Ray of Enfeeblement, Grease, Color Spray, Grease, Lesser Orb of Acid, Comprehend Languages, etc., etc.

3rd - Precise Shot; spells: Scorching Ray, etc.

5th - Empower; spells: Ray of Exhaustion, etc.

6th - Split Ray

7th - spells: Enervation, Orb of X

If you continue wizard, you could take Spell Focus (necromancy) and Metamagic Focus (necromancy) to cast Split Ray Enervations by 10th level as 5th level spells: 2 ranged touch rolls to do 2d4 negative levels. That's pretty sweet. 2nd level Split Rays of Enfeeblement and 4th level Split Rays of Exhaustion are HUGE at debuffing the bad guys, too.

Precise Shot is more important than you might think, also, since the +4 AC from cover can be a major thorn in the side of an arcanist who gets only 1 BAB/2 levels (or, typically, lower for a wizard who pursues a prestige class).

Additionally, it's worth noting that by 7th level, you could cast a Split Ray Scorching Ray for 12d6 total damage. That compares favorably to the 4th-level orbs.

I'd take them ouf of INT. Either lower it to 19 and raise DEX to 15 or (my preference) lower INT to 18, raise DEX to 16 and STR to 10 for longbow effectiveness.

Mine dropped the Wisdom and Strength in favour of 16/12/20 in the key attributes.

A Mule covers more of your perimeter against ambushes ..and 11 levels in it's just been pointed out that it's got a very solid kick at low levels.

I've got a 6th level grey elf wizard that's doing the same thing. I went ahead and picked up Craft Wondrous Item at 6th so I could craft Boccob's Blessed Book and Pearls of Power. I'll be getting split ray at 9th level.

Here are some feat suggestions. Elven Spell Lore (PHB2) gives you a +2 on caster level checks to dispel and allows you to pick one spell in which you can change the energy type when you prepare it. (i.e. Scorching Ray becomes Freezing Ray)

Coordinated Shot (NONC) lets you ignore soft cover from your allies and you can select it as a bonus 3rd level Spellwarp Sinper feat since you will already have precise shot.

Most of my spell selection doesn't have to worry about spell resistance and rays don't usually have saves. Spellwarping your spells into rays removes reflex saves so a spell like Blast of Flame is a good idea. It's basically a 4th level cone shaped fireball that doesn't have spell resistance with a reflex save for half (which you bypass by making it a ray).

P.S. Remember you do +1 damage if you're within 30 feet.

YES YES YES Point Blank and Precise Shot are worth it, especially at low levels.

It's essentially +4 when firing into melee. (+5 within 30 feet. And +1 damage within 30 feet as well.) That means at second level your attack bonus WITHOUT Point Blank and Precise is -2 (+2 dex, +1 BAB). WITH Point Blank and Precise, that bonus becomes +3 within 30 feet.

They are indispensable, in my opinion, as my ranged touching halfling rogue wizard misses mostly when he fires through cover (He has PBS and PS.) Heck, my Halfling ranged toucher is going to get Improved Precise Shot so he can ignore cover and Ranged Recall to prevent natural one misses.

Just make sure that you take the level 4 orb spells, you'll have the high save DCs to make the secondary effects count.

Oh, and evoker/rogue/spellwarp sniper adds flexibility. Area spells for groups and rays for big bads and crowded rooms/tunnels. Plus, the save for the area spells will be GOOD.

orb of force u hit everything no energy resist, no sr, no passing go ,no collecting 200gp :D
i love it.
so point blank and precise are a must as for the lower level orb spells get a couple of rods of subatution as soon as u can to confound the er.
