Hey Everyone,

It's that time of year when I have to start a yet again new character and it seems like it's going to have to be totally new as I've run out of old characters to rebuild.

I'm having a bit of trouble however coming up with the divine half of our little halfling caravan idea here in the Shield Lands. I'm going to be bringing the divine magic and the healing but I'm not sure which would be best to be.

Cleric? Favoured Soul? Arcane Disiplined Beguiler or Bard?

If I did go with say a Cleric, are there good archer builds out there for them that don't hurt the old caster level or spell progression? Is a halfling Favoured Soul with a Longsword much of a threat without taking 3-6 rounds to buff? Does Arcane Disipline suck?

I'm looking for some assistance with all this, let's see where we can go.

I'm going to be doing a Tallfellow halfling, so I'll already fill the "Elf" role in the party too. A Cleric could enjoy a very decent spot/listen without any ranks?

I assume you mean a Longbow archer.

A cleric of Phaulkon will give you war domain "weapon focus" and Pious Templar "Weapon Specialisation" longbow. Halflings can worship Phaulkon its a human deity.

If you pump your 1 and 3 feats into Point Blank and Precise that gives the basis of an OK archer.

Well an archer whose just good at slaying things from a good distance away and all. Could us a hand crossbow for all I'd honestly worry about. :)

More interested in the magic side of things though, what with all these new feats. Tips and suggestions welcome please!

i have some good fun with my halfling druid, a halfling archer PLUS divine spellcasting is way to stat points and feat consuming, to do reliable damage with a bow a character needs strength bows, at least +2 to start with.

a druid can just throw "produce flame" fire spheres that hit with enough accuracy and do medium damage and good damage for low levels. and most DMs will grant you a +1 to hit for thrown weapons with it, combined with your size and dex bonus you can even go without "precise shot"

a halfling stormlord might be another option, ok, you reach the necessary feats one level later than a human build but you will get a very unique character, again making some use of the halfling racial boni.

If your region offers the Far Horizons initiate feat from Races of Destiny, you could make a cleric of fharlangn who has overland flight, and take improved flight from complete adventurer to have good maneuverability flight all day. Be a little hummingbird cleric.

Honestly, and I'm not joking, a good cleric archer build is cleric 15, with the archery feats to back it up.

1: Point blank
3: Precise
6: Rapid Shot
9: Craft arms and armor

The two kinds of spells that will help the most are party buffs, like bless, and prayer, that help everyone hit better; and archer-type buff spells, that help you hit harder and better (align weapon, greater magic weapon, invis purge).

That said, this build is primarily a cleric. You will have NO trouble lining up the few ray spells you do have access to (searing light).

If you're looking to be a double-threat, I would take two levels of ranger. Good for saves, gives track and a bunch of skill points (push the wis skills, it's better to be great at a few things), and delivers your character concept at 3rd level, where you have all the archery feats and 1st level cleric spells.

You'll always be a spell-level behind. I'm okay with that, but you might not be. You'll also have a 20% Xp penalty, which is a drag, especially if you're playing as part of a group. If you're hoping to always be with this caravan, then don't do it.

Alternately, take point blank and precise at 1 and 3, and follow with craft wand. By 6th level, you'll be a wand-wielding damage dealer, and that MW longbow can be dropped into your Hewards and forgotten about, until the constructs come around. That's probably a better move, all around.

Hmmm, so archer does seem to be the best thing for a halfling cleric to take up. I lvoe the stormlord idea but it does eat up a few feats...hmmm. I'll have to see what Living Greyhawk allows for gods to do that.

I wouldn't say that archer is the best thing.

You asked for ways to make a cleric archer. I gave you some, and there were other good ideas too. That doesn't mean that archer/thrower is the best way to go with a halfling cleric.

Also consider:

Item crafter
Super healer
Spellcaster (metamagic/more domains)
Undead destroyer
Party Face
Fount of Knowledge

AND

Who else is in this party?
What can the group already do?
What does the group need?

Well, there is a temple to Procan in the Shield Lands, and he allows Stormlords. He has the luck and travel domains as well. You could even use Weapon Focus (trident) to qualify.

but a trident is a martial weapon, consuming another feat, of an already feat consuming build, therefore avoid it for a straight cleric/stormlord ;)

Well I like the idea of Procan, not too sure he's all in favor of halflings and caravans and things. A wagon is just cheaper then a ship. :)

Though it'd be interesting to fight with a trident. Maybe do Cleric/Fighter and so forth...

No, no, I should stick with the straight divine idea or go with the bard.... Do you guys think a Bard plus a Paladin miight even out to make a cleric?

yes, it is a pity that none of the LG deities combines war domain, wields a stormlord weapon and grants the stormlord prestige class.

i hope the soon upcomming (yes i am an optimist) LG deities document 3.0 makes a tiny addition (see, i am a real optimist).

on the other hand, even a halfling cleric 6/stormlord X with the current rules set can be a survivable character.

Alright, looks like I'll be going beguiler then since one of the other people is going to do favored soul.

So we'll have a beguiler, a bright lands necromancer, a paladin, a marshal and a favored soul! Awesomeness.

With the exception of the necromancer, that's a hell of a charismatic party you got there. Oh the beautiful people...

Yeah we are. Not sure about the beguiler yet. Might want to do bard. Beguilder lets me go 10/16/14/16/10/8 for stats though, where my bard wants to go 10/16/12/14/10/15, statisticlaly speaking. Which is better then my cleric. 14/10/12/12/14/10. Bleh.

I too am working on a Shield Lands Halfling Cleric for my next character. I've looked at the Combat Medic route with Brandobis (SP?) as the halfling god. Taking Celerity and Trickery for domains. 30' of speed for a halfling and invisibility as a domain spell at 5th level. Add that to the Combat Medic PrC and you can run around the battle field casting divine buffers and healing. I haven't quite cleaned up the build yet, but that is my starting point. I'm willing to take suggestions on this. I guess if you already have an entire party figured out that's different, but I am building this one as a stand alone character to step into any party.

Also, you might want to consider a spear as a weapon. It will do 1d6 damage as a halfling and you get your +1 for throwing. It also works with all the archery feats (especially Rapid Shot).

Just some thoughts. :D

There are some meta-orgs which allow you to worship a pantheon, rather than a specific deity. Such as the Old Kerk of Perrenland. I'm not absolutely certain, but I think you can choose any two Domains of any of the deities in the pantheon.

What church meta-orgs do you have in your region?

Also, check if any clans or other meta-orgs grant you proficiency with a ranged weapon.

If you were a Cleric of Phaulkon, it would give you a head start on qualifying for the Order of the Bow Initiate(CW) at CL 6.

I think Improved Flight was reprinted in a later book, Races of the Wild, and that version no longer applies to flight other than natural flight.

Well I just realised that as the party stands, we've got no one who'll be able to do anything with traps, so Beguiler it is!

I'll make sure to pump my UMD for healing.
