So I'm kicking around the idea of playing a half-orc wizard and have a couple of builds in mind.

First the stats:
Build A: 13/14/14/15/8/6
Build B: 16/14/14/14/8/6

Build B is defiantly the more interesting wizard. Note that I’m not planning to multiclass in a barbarian. Or anything else that costs me spell progression.

The quandary is how terrible it’ll be with only 14 int. In build A I have 16 int at level 4 (18 as soon as I can make a +2 headband of int). While with 14 int… things are must less interesting at levels 4-7.

Now about magic. I’m planning to be a transmuter and spend a lot of effort buffing up the party – bringing spells like Enlarge Person at low levels. The banned schools look like Evocation and Enchantment (mostly do to the saving throw dependency of those schools). Necromancy might be another valid choice as Evocation does have Magic missile and the orb spells that don’t have saving throws. Build B would push me into the dangerous realm of touch spells, which might prove interesting and let me make some use out of necromancy.

Opinions and thoughts appreciated.

I'd go with B. You'll end with less int, but if you're already avoiding save vs. spells, the difference won't be much. A 16 in strength makes melee a more valid option, which could make things interesting.

I'd keep necromancy. Then again, I love my false life. Ray of enfeeblement is also pretty good.

I agree. Keep the Necromancy. False Life is way too valuable. Especially if you plan on entering melee. My sorcerer enters melee with a 14 ST and White Dragon Fang Longspear frequently (though less now that he has gotten to 7th level and is missing his left hand). Falselife is a must for him and has saved his life on numerous occasions. Of course, Falselife for a sorcerer is kind of like a pre-emptive cure light wounds. Every time you get hit you just cast it again. But once you get a handfull of 2nd-level pearls of power, a wizard should be able to do this fine, as well.
