Hey all,
I'm working on a Halfling Skiprock thrower build. The goal is to get as many attacks as possible in as rapid a time as possible. Here's what I'm thinking right now:

Halfling 14/18/12/12/8/8
All skills in Ride, Handle Animal, and Sleight of Hand (character lives in Ket; mount skills are for roleplaying reasons)
Ftr1: TWF, EWP: Skiprock (metaorg grants me access to skiprocks right away)
Ftr2: Point Blank
Ftr3: Rapid Shot
Ftr4: WFocus: Skiprock
Ftr5
Ftr6: WSpec: Skiprock, Precise Shot
MT1-9: Not sure what feats yet, may go for Mounted Archery stuff
Tricks: Palm Throw, 2 with 1 Blow, Deadeye Shot

This character would also carry various alchemical throwing things, a +1 Composite Longbow with various metal arrows for monsters with DR, and a scimitar and shortsword for when he gets trapped in melee combat, and saps (because he lives in Ket).

Does anyone have any further/contrary ideas regarding this character? Thanks.

I would drop Deadeye Shot for Weak Spot...With Weak Spot, you'll never miss anything ever except in the cases of a natural one, concealment, or ridiculously powerful Monks.

OK

Given you want to fight with Skiprocks as often as possible, how about you rearrange you feats to maximise the number of hits

Ftr1: Point Blank, Precise Shot, EWP: Skiprock (metaorg grants me access to skiprocks right away)
Ftr2: Rapid Shot
Ftr3: WFocus: Skiprock
Ftr4: WSpec: Skiprock
Ftr5
Ftr6: , TWF (is this for MT?)
MT1-5: Not sure what feats yet, may go for Mounted Archery stuff
Tricks: Palm Throw, 2 with 1 Blow, Deadeye Shot

Assuming MT means Master Thrower, MT only goes to 5th level
so you could give some thought Rogue or Ranger levels.

As for Mounted Archery, unless it qualifies the PC for a PrC or you have a pressing need to be able to do effective ranged combat from a running mount (the penalty of missle combat from a running mount -4 wi Mounted Archery as opposed to -8 normaly)

Not sure how you're figuring three feats at 1st level... this is a halfling build.

Ftr6: , TWF (is this for MT?)

You can TWF with any light weapons, including thrown weapons like Skiprocks. That's why I had TWF at 1st level - so I could get two attacks a round right out of the gate.

I'd consider 4ftr/2rng instead of 6ftr; you're taking 2wf anyway, so you might as well take it from the ranger side and pick up the skills and track. Your main problem is going to be that your to-hit bonus is going to rock, but your damage bonus will suck. For later feats, if you're after stacking up the damage, go for improved 2wf (and possibly even greater 2wf). If you want to pick up on the penalties that are incurred by too many attacks, improved rapid shot may help. Another feat to consider might be ranged disarm (if it works for skiprocks) - if you try enough times, you should be able to disarm anybody whose attack bonus isn't +30, especially if they power attack.

Edit: You might like to also consider Exotic Weapon Master. You've already got the prereqs, and ranger will give you the skillpoints easily. Two tricks of interest are close-quaters ranged combat and ranged disarm, freeing up another feat.

with thrown weapons, you WANT to have "power throw", the downside is, that it needs "power attack" and "brutal throw" as prerequisites, making it hard for a halfling to qualify. i would even take only strenght 12, and put the level 4 stat bump into it to qualify for power attack.

ps: the skiprocks are ammunition, aren't they, so they are destroyed on a hit, so you have to carry along a BIG bag of them, or having a riding dog with some ammunition.

Maybe I should focus on getting the damage bonus right away and get the flurry of attacks later? It would certainly help out with my DR issue...

an ammunition thrower (shuriken, skip rocks) relies on the party buffers to enchant the ammunition in stacks of 50 with greater magic weapon and flaming arrow.

a (light) weapon thrower or a ammunition thrower who doesn't get the buffs, needs some additional means of increasing the damage output, that's what "power throw" is for.

otherwise you are stuck with some meager 1d2 to 1d4 dice for the base damage, add your strength bonus (+2 to +4 for a halfling with strength buff) and a +1 for point blank, and that is it, even with cartloads of attacks, it will not become impressive. not to mention critters with damage reduction.

even the ranged stunts from exotic weapon master or master thrower, are not too good for a halfling thrower, as ranged trip and ranged disarm take character size modifier and weapon size modifier in account.

if the skiprocks are your only trick, you are endagered from the "one-trick-pony" desaster in a lot of modules.

thrower type characters are especcially hard to build, while they are a fantasy and martial arts movie archetypes, they are hard to get off, especcially in LG.

ps: aren't skiprocks expensive?? i would be carefull with expensive ammunition, a typical thrower gets through 3 to 10 pieces of ammunition per round, so it can become a costly hobby.

EWP: Warsling if you have access will increase your range and damage from d6 to d8. Having all your enhancements on the Warsling would get around having magic weapons.
Not sure how to rapid load a sling though.

There was a discussion on infinitemonkeys yahoo group on the costing for skiprocks(can't remember the answer) I was confused so I asked the question but I decided to go a different way with my scout.

Unfortunately, I know of no way to rapidly reload a sling. The Rapid Reload feat only works with crossbows :(.

If you were to use shuriken instead of Skiprocks, you might consider the following build:

Halfling

1st Monk

Two-Weapon Fighting

2nd Fighter

Point Blank Shot

3rd Fighter

Precise Shot
Rapid Shot

Rest Rogue for the extra sneak attack damage, or fighter for extra attacks.

This would allow you to flurry, two-weapon fight and rapid shot with shuriken granting four attacks at level 3. Of course, halfling shuriken do 1 damage each, so you'd be rolling four d20's and then just multiplying your base damage by your number of hits. :D

Ranged rogues are very difficult to pull off, because the person is likely only flat footed for one round, if that. Additionally, many "box text" encounters allow no surprise round at all. So those 4d20s are each rolled for 1 damage each, hardly threatening to most monsters.

To throw more than one shuriken with each hand (ie more than two), you need to have Quick Draw so you can pull two, throw them, pull two more as a free action, and throw them as well. Shuriken aren't worth enchanting, because of how often they'll be left behind in a monster that runs off or makes you run away, which means DR/magic becomes impervious.

Overall, I don't think a shuriken rogue is a good idea. I don't happen to like most range rogue builds in general, shuriken rogues especially don't work.

to what martin said. i really think power throw is worth a look. its one of the few ways to really get some damage out of little thrown weapons.

Shuriken are treated like ammunition for drawing them and what happens after they are used. So, you don't need quickdraw to to use them with a full attack. Also, some spells will work with 50 of them at a time. Buying magic versions isn't worthwhile and depending upon others to enchant them in the mod might also be a problem.

the problem is, it is best with a medium sized monk, with an decent strength, as you need "brutal throw" anyway, you can substitute your str modifier for your dex modifier on thrown weapons.

what a pity this wasn't core when my half ork monk underwent the last conversion.

then take the master thrower ranged trip or exotic weapon master ranged disarm (i am not sure which has which, no books around here :)), and throw from 6 to 12 shuriken per round. and get a lot of trip or disarm versus foes. they tend to roll crappy once in a while.

Looks like you forgot to get Quick Draw, so you'll be limited to 1 thrown attack per round unless you do get it. It takes a move action to draw a weapon unless you grab that feat.

Skiprocks count as ammunition for the purpose of drawing them - no move action necessary.

That's the one. It's also the most recent source for the elven weapons from Complete Warrior.
