| fghj17198308-12-07, 08:00 PM | I just got access to Hellreaver from fiendish codex II. I was playing my paladin who I was going toward divine crusader of Al'Akbar. He is currently paladin 2. After looking at the Hellreaver class I really like what I see and was wondering what you guys thought about this. Is this class effective or just cool? Feats are another thing I am trying to figure out for this guy. Human - LG Str 16 Dex 10 Con 14 Int 10 Wis 8 Cha 15 1 Pld - Pwr. Att. , and Wep. Foc. Falchion 2 Pld 3 Pld - Feat? 4 Pld - pump Cha 5 Ftr - Feat? 6 HR - Divine Might 7 HR 8 HR - Pump Cha 9 HR - Divine shield or Imp Crit Falchion? 10 HR 11 HR 12 HR - Feat?, pump Cha 13 HR 14 HR 15 HR - Ability Focus Divine Retribution If you were curious as to what I was playing on before I probly was gonna go something like pld 4/ ftr 2/ Pious Templar 1/ Divine Crusader 8. |
| dkay80708-12-07, 09:02 PM | I think it's both cool and effective. To be honest, it's not optimized - you can certainly do better - but it has some really interesting abilities that give it the cool factor, IMO. I'll be playing a Hellreaver as well for Greyhawk Ruins. Your build seems fine. |
| fghj17198308-12-07, 09:10 PM | Cool thx for the response. Would you mind listing out your build so I could have a comparison to check out? |
| dkay80708-12-07, 09:46 PM | Sure thing. Human Str: 16 Dex: 14 Con: 14 Int: 8 Wis: 10 Cha: 12 1 - Barbarian 1 - Extra Rage, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (greatspear) 2 - Fighter 1 - Combat Reflexes 3 - Fighter 2 - Weapon Focus (greatspear), Power Attack 4 - Fighter 3 5 - Fighter 4 - Weapon Specialization (greatspear) 6-15 - Hellreaver - Short Haft at 6th, Melee Weapon Mastery at 9th, ?? for 12th and 15th I've retired two very powerful and optimized melee PCs, I have another at 15th, one at 13th and a few at lower levels. This PC is not meant to be ultimately optimized - he's more of a style PC that I want to try out a few new things with. It's still a solid build though. What I like most is that the build comes into its own at 6th level and from that point onward, it's just random flair. I won't be waiting for "that cool new ability" every level. I can enjoy him in the now. |
| fghj17198308-13-07, 11:22 AM | As I cannot think of too many early lvl feats that are that amazing for this build I am thinking of going pld 5 instead of pld 4/ ftr 1 getting another smite attack. If I did this I was thinking of taking charging smite since I wont get much milage out of the mount. I hear pld 4 is usually a major break point if your not going mostly pld. Though I can't think of any feats that really stand out to make going ftr1 worth it. Thoughts or suggestions? |
| TWG_Prometheus08-13-07, 11:27 AM | Paladin 6 will bump your saves. I need a REALLY good reason to not take a 6th level in a class once I'm already at 5th level in said class. |
| fghj17198308-13-07, 11:41 AM | Well I really want to go Hellreaver 10 so I am trying to figure out the best 5 lvls into the class from paladin 2. I like paladin 4 to get turning to power divine might. Though I guess paladin 5 can seem kinda meh saves wise since they dont go up at all. Thx for the input need more suggestions. :D |
| Golorious08-13-07, 09:38 PM | Taking a dip in Hellreaver for only one level is completely valid since it makes 1) all your attacks count as good aligned and 2) immunity to fear. Plus a mini smite ability that if you have charisma you can use more than once a day since they refresh every encounter. My character who is marshal 3, fighter 2, paladin 3 will likely take a level or even several of the class after I get to paladin 4 for turning attempts. |
| Archwolf09-04-07, 04:37 PM | I just got access to hellreaver with my 4th level monk, and I'm a bit torn about when to go into it. I definitely agree with the fellow above who suggests a one level dip is valid - good aligned weapons are either expensive or require a spell. Anyway, I've got a human monk 4 that I had planned on taking straight monk at least to 12, but hellreaver is too fun to ignore. the monk is about to level, so i feel like it's a decision point, especially since you can't go back to monk once you leave it. Which is a bummer. My stats run S 16, D 14 C 12 I 8 W 16 (includes level bump) Ch 8 I see a couple of routes. M4/F2/HR 9 - maxes out hellreaver. (F2 for BAB purpose after being corrected below) M6/F1/HR xx Provides the monk bonus feat, plus another 10 ft of movement. The F1 is to get BAB to +5 and the extra feat I need for power attack. then M6/F1/PT 3/ HR 5 - Gets weapon spec, mettle, smite, plus 5 levels of HR - M12/HR 3. hey, monks are fun. If the assembled experts have thoughts on the monk/hellreaver combo, I'd welcome them. |

The nice thing about Hellreaver is that you get something worthwhile at just about every level, so there's good reason to max the class, but also no really bad time to leave either. Don't forget that Hellreaver gets mettle at level 4 also, so that's one less point for Pious Templar. It's kinda cool that a Dwarven Monk 16/Hellreaver 1 with Earth Sense, Earth Fist, and Versatile Unarmed Strike can overcome DR/Magic, Lawful, Good, Cold Iron, Adamantine, and Bludgeoning/Peircing/Slashing..... |

Can you get access to the Holy Strike alternative class feature from Complete Champion (meta-org, perhaps)? That gives you the good-aligned weapons & +1d6 damage (but not the +2 attack bonus). Plus, you can stay a monk if that's what you want. It'll just cost you a retraining, since it's a 4th level feature, but you can take it as soon as you level to 5th, rather than waiting for Hellreaver. |
| Vamroc09-07-07, 04:48 PM | Two key points about the class you must have four ranks in Knowlegde The Planes and + 5 BAB .You have to take a dip in a non fighter class to get the four ranks in planes. This means at sixth level you can get the plus 1 to BAB and then you can take the Hellreaver class at level seven. That is the fastest route I can think of. |
| jstorrie09-07-07, 09:36 PM | A fifth-level character can have 4 ranks in a cross-class skill. You could get in with any of several good foundations, like Pal1/Ftr4, Pal4/Ftr1, Ftr4/Brb1, &c. |
| Archwolf09-08-07, 01:04 AM | plus retraining makes it extra easy. It's just costly. So an M4/F2 can get their without too much pain. |
