I was thinking of making a healer (as they added some spells to the Healer list)... and then I thought that a Mystic Theurge with Healer/Sorcerer Combo wouldn't be bad.

Healer 3/Sorcerer 4/Mystic Theurge 8 gives you 6th level spells in both arcane and divine.

Decent feats would be Practiced Spellcaster for both sides and Augment Healing.

Can you guys take this, make it better... stronger... faster... do you have the technology? :-D

An almost MANDATORY feat for anyone silly enough to take the Healer class is Spontaneous Healer, so that way they don't have to waste as many slots preparing cure spells. Augment Healing is good as well. Practiced Spellcaster is almost worthless for most healer spells, as most of them are not dependant on caster level. Overall, the Healer is a pretty worthless class in LG because it lacks any strong offensive capability, which is necessarry to be effective in LG...

While I don't think it would be too great if it was your PC, I think it would make an excellent cohort.

I wouldn't even go that far. Honestly, a Cleric does everything a healer can and more, without having to prepare cure spells. Though it is at least a viable cohort, being that it would then only be a 5th or 6th character at a table, and not a 4th where it would be endangering the party...

I will probably be taking a Healer cohort with one of my characters. Yes, a cleric is better at first, but everything changes when the Healer gets to level 8. Two cohorts for the price of one! :D

A Large g. invising, dim dooring, pouncing, raking, flying, fire breathing 7th level cleric with a permanent magic circle against evil! Another 2 for the price of 1!

Indeed, Healers do get some love. There are ways to be useful in combat as a healer too. Keeping people alive is obviously one of them.

Maybe do an archer/healer? People seem to give them a lot of room to just pink at things. Not everyone is a wizard/cleric/druid after all.

Maybe Healer/Bard with a little Aristocrat mixed in for good messure..

The thurge could work. I never trusted them in general myself. Understand that usually a cleric's going to be better with domains and turning and armor. If I were to do a healer, I'd go halfling tallfellow 6/16/14/12/14/14 and work on being the party face. Diplomacy, Sense Motive - definetly. I'd also prep for Seeker of Misty Isle in case you ever got access. Grabbing that travel domain would be really useful, even if it did delay the unicorn for a level. I'd also see about the chances of Contemplative, for the extra domain. Feats Imight consider are track, one of the dew diplomacy ones from PHBII if I thought I could be creative, maybe mounted combat and take a dog everywhere. I'd grab a longspear to aid and flank, grab disposables for when you have to do damage. If you're on a dog, he can keep a few tanglefoot bags on him.

Overall I'd get the unicorn then go the rest of the way in Seeker, max out spot/listen. Not the clearest plan, but those are some things to consider.

Just a thought, but what about doing a healer/combat medic? Beef up those healing spells even more.

Just a thought.

Now you're talking. :)

I have tried to bundle Cleric, Church Inquisitor, Seeker of the Misty Isle and Contemplative into the one build, but I floundered on the 'must be a member of a Lawful Good church or organisation..' requirement for the Church Inquisitor PrC. I still not satisfied that there isn't some meta-org somewhere that is classified as Lawful Good which a Neutral Good Elf or Half-Elf Cleric of Corellon Larethian could join and use as the prerequisite.

Imagine having the Celerity, Inquisition, Magic and Travel domains..

I'm calling my lawyer.

Aren't most healing spells touch range?

Isn't there a feat that can change that?

Divine Ward lets you spend a turn attempt to cast a touch spell at close range, but it's only on one person.

You can also add more people at the cost of one turning attempt per person and it lasts 24 hours (IIRC). The only problem is that you'd need to take a level of cleric along with the healer to get the turning attempts. :(

Doesn't it say in the first sentence of the feat "Once per day you can spend 10 minutes" yadda yadda yadda, meaning you can only get 1 person?

I don't have my book handy, but doesn't it also go further than that in the mechanics of the feat (further down) of being able to extend the benefits to more than 1 person?

No clue, I'm at work so I don't have the book either.

Also, IIRC healers get the unicorn mount at 7th. How viable would a Healer 7/Hospitaler 8 build be?

Well, looks do-able...gives martial proficiency and armor proficiency...still can't wear metal armor though...

Dragonhide/Wildwood :)

Human
feats: 1 Mounted Combat, Ride-By Attack
3 Power Attack
6 Spirited Charge
8 Hospitaler bonus feat: Improved Bullrush
9 Shock Trooper
12 Whatever
15 Whatever

Adds an offensive aspect to the rather defensive class.

Now I've got access to my books. :D The Divine Ward thing will be a problem since it does have being able to turn/rebuke undead as a pre-req. You can also extend it to more than one person as long as you expend one turning attempt and the 10 minutes for each additional link.

The build you're looking at will have to be tweaked to Healer8/Hospitaler7 since you get the unicorn companion at 8th and not 7th.

Does Healer 8 get me anything else? Also how many caster levels does Hospitaler 7 lose?
Jay_Ibero_911

02-13-07, 04:51 PM
Just to give the Healer ANYTHING to do in combat besides patch people up, here's a list of all reserve feats a healer can use:

Magic Disruption (3rd level Abjurations)
Magic Sensitive (3rd level Divinations)
Mystic Backlash (5th level Abjuration)
Sickening Grasp (3rd level Necromancy)

They may also benefit from the Fey or Fiendish Heritage feats for a little more versatility...or put it a level of sorc for draconic or infernal heritage and draconic breath or infernal howl...let you actually deal some damage with your spell slots....

Healer 8 gives you the unicorn, +1 bab, +1 fort, and +1 will besides the d8 hd and +1 spellcasting. If you do Healer8/Hospitaler7, you'll be behind 2 spellcasting levels just like a Healer7/Hospitaler8. Overall, almost identical in build and you get an additional +1 will save with healer 8. About the only thing you'll be missing from not taking hospitaler 8 is some lay on hands advancement, but thats negligible.

I'm not entirely convinced the Healer is worth taking but if it is worthwhile then it is either as a 'dip' or a straight class (with full spell progression to take full advantage of the spells coming early).
I certainly wouldn't Theurge it.

Ok, based on the suggestions here... and some talking to our local people:

Healer 1-8/Combat Medic 9-13/Healer 14-15 (Yes, I know Combat Medic isn't open access... Ulek takes care of it's military :) )

Feats:
1- Dodge, Augment Healing
3- Reach Spell
6- Combat Casting
9- Empower Spell
12- Elusive Target
15- Quicken Spell

I decided against Spontaneous Healer as you can only use it a number of times per day equal to your Wis mod.

Yeah, but you should end up with at least a 24 WIS at 12th level, so you can convert 7 times per day....as opposed to being stuck with only what cures you prepare, and being screwed after that....

Healer 8/Hospitaler 7 doesn't work because you need a +5 BAB. You would need to do Healer 10/ Hospitaler 5.

Healer's are wizard BAB? Lame
Timlagor

02-16-07, 08:48 AM
You'd need Mobility before Elusive Target which makes is rather an expensive proposition (though a Healer is one of the few for whom Mobility would probably be quite useful).

I would definitely take Spontaneous Healer.

It is a bit simpler to go:
Healer 8/Fighter 1/Hospitaler 6 - the Fighter bonus feat is all Hospitaler 7 gets you anyway. Might as well get the Fort Save.

I'd go something like this:
1: Healer Mounted Combat, Ride-By-Attack
2: Fighter 1: Spirited Charge
3: Healer 2: Power Attack
6: Healer 5: Spontaneous Healer
9: Healer 8: Improved Bullrush
10: Hospitaler 1: Shock Trooper
12: Hospitaler 3: Improved Sunder
13: Hospitaler 4: Combat Brute

Zen Archery?
Magic of the Land, Races of the Wild open access another +2\spell level?
Monk level for Wis AC?
Marshall with high Cha adds damage for flank or extra AC?
Bard song for extra damage\ attack?
Cleric level for healing domain?
Spontaneous Healer isn't that necessary as all your spells are healing anway.
you could just stay crap at melee up your AC, Tumble and Aid Another
Are Close Wounds and Panacea still NONC?

Close Wounds and Panacea are indeed Unlisted.

Taking a Cleric level gives nice benefits but begs the question of why you aren't just playing a Cleric -the only significant advantage to playing a Healer is getting those spells earlier than anyone else: you can't afford to give it away by multiclassing.

The reason for Spontaneous Healer is that you are going to want to prepare a lot of the non-healing spells on the list and they may not come up. (some of them you can just have on scrolls but judging the amount of Healing you need is going to be a tricky business and SH gives you leeway that I consider necesary ... from my complete lack of experience playing one ;))

I don't see Healers are significant contributors offensively myself.
