Ok, here is a question. you can take the dark companion option instead of the familiar now, if you come from core greyhawk.

Ok, could I suposidly:

At third level take practiced spellcaster (to jack up my caster level once I hit 5th)

and then at 5th pick the dark companion option.

then, take my sixth level in sorcerer and get a familiar that way

and use my sixth level feat to take augmented familiar

Effectivly having both a dark companion and a blink dog?!

(I'm not sure how usefull it would be, but holy crap would that be cool...you could have a real dog and a shadow dog!)

Practiced Spellcaster DOES NOT let you up your caster level for prerequisites.

I think you would need to take 5 levels in Sorcerer and have BAB +5 to get both a blink dog familiar and a Dark Companion. Really, a Blink Dog is just as good as a Dark Companion, because it can flank and attack, to make up for the fact that it can't impose the Dark Companion penalties.

One alternative is to level in druid after four levels in Hexblade. Then, once you can meet the requirements, take a level in Beastmaster (Complete Adventurer) and get an animal companion at your character's level -1!

It's far better to gain an animal companion than a familiar. Even an improved familiar costs XP if it dies.

If you are in an area that has a metaorg that grants access to "Natural Bond", you can take a couple levels in a class other than druid or beastmaster.

Another question that came up. What is the movement rate of the Dark Companion? PHB2 states it must remain within line-of-sight and 120 feet of the Hexblade. Nothing about movment rate. I ask because the Dark Companion apparently can stay by your side. So it has 30 feet movement? What if you (the Hexblade) becomes hasted? Does it then get 60 feet movement? What if you're a Halfling Hexblade? Does your Dark Companion only move at 20 feet since it only has to keep up with you?

"Your companion's speed is equal to yours (including all modes of movement you possess) and it acts on your turn each round."

Second paragraph, in the "Benefit" section of the Dark Companion description, page 47, PHB2.

It moves as fast as the hexblade who created it. So it can keep up with a hexblade who moves in to attack.
