| rockondon03-29-08, 12:41 AM | And if it slows my spell progression, I don't want it. Mostly because I have the quicken spell feat, and I want every 7th/8th lvl slot I can get to quicken 3rd and 4th lvl spells. So far I'm a 13th (if I step on a kobold I'll level to 14th) level cleric of Kelanen. It seems like prestige classes are always the way to go in higher levels, yet I've never found one that seemed better than a simple straight cleric. I have ruathar access but it doesn't excite me. |

Aside from contemplative, not really. Contemplative is useless for Kelanen anyways, only got two domains. Straight Cleric is the way to go. |
| rockondon03-29-08, 01:26 AM | plus any advice on gear would be great. So far I got: boots of speed belt of battle mithral full plate (death ward, nimbleness (making it +4 dex) a few other minor upgrades) animated shield (death ward) adamantite greatsword (flaming shocking frost) gloves of dex +4 periapt wisdom +6 strand of prayer beads ring of anticipation - lets me roll twice for initiative + other benefits no second ring (saving up for ring of freedom of movement. Everything grapples - grrr) (I don't have a ring of protection since I cast shield of faith beforehand or as a quickened spell so it'd be redundant) cloak of elemental protection (saving up for cloak of thorns for +2 natural armor) helm of glorious recovery ioun stone +1 ac sacred scabbard vest of resistance +5 ioun stone - gives me alertness - which allows me to use "not this time" card armbands of might (lame, looking to upgrade these. +2 dmg is kinda meh) When I can afford it I'll be crafting the two 30000gp ioun stones, giving me +1 caster level and +1 to hit, saves, skills, checks. When I hit 15th lvl I'll be casting my magic vestment, greater magic weapon spells as a 20th lvl caster (thanks to the karma prayer bead) making my armor/shield/sword +5 for 20 hours/day (and very difficult to dispel woot woot) |

What about a good weapon? A decent Adamantine weapon with a few good upgrades goes a long way. As for Rings, a Ring of Counterspells that you whack a greater Dispel Magic in will help you with all those buffs. Another one I have found good personally is the ring of sustenence on a cleric. Means I can stay up and do all the watches! Other items to buy: - Lesser Extend Rods (good for Healthful Rest, Magic Vestment, Divine Protection, Shield of Faith, Magic Circle versus evil etc) - Lesser Empower rods - GREAT for Insignias of healing, with Augment healing thats a nice average of 30 HPS as a heal spread out to the whole party as a 3rd level slot (easy to pearl back after the fight) Good for Battle Clerics who haven't gone the cheaseweasal approach. - Normal Extend rod: for 11,000GP this is a great way to have Heroes feast last all day, as well as extend those FoMs to last the whole dungeon... PEARLS OF POWER! My Cleric has 6 PoP 1s, 3 PoPs 2, 3 PoPs 3 and 3 PoPs 4. This is considered by many high level clerics to be much less than what a lot of otehr prepared casters have. Pearls of Power are MOST useful for those elusive level 4 slots and dispensing many magic vestments out to yourself and the party. |

A decent Adamantine weapon with a few good upgrades goes a long way. I think I mentioned my adamantine frosty, flaming, shocking greatsword up there. As for Rings, a Ring of Counterspells that you whack a greater Dispel Magic in will help you with all those buffs. I've thought about that. I find a ring of freedom of movement absolutely essential, as for the other ring slot I have a tough time deciding. Another one I have found good personally is the ring of sustenence on a cleric. Means I can stay up and do all the watches! meh. I have the 'restful armor' upgrade on my armor btw. Lets me sleep in my armor without hindrance, and I can even make listen checks while asleep and decide whether or not i want to wake up or not. - Lesser Extend Rods (good for Healthful Rest, Magic Vestment, Divine Protection, Shield of Faith, Magic Circle versus evil etc) I have a neat excel sheet that keeps track of all my attacks, spells, buffs, durations of those buffs, etc. I find that the minutes spells usually last throughout the entire dungeon/castle/whatever, unless we spend a lot of time searching. Divine protection is a nice spell - wish I had access to it. After about 80 mods, I've never gotten access to a single cleric spell worth using. One mod had access to close wounds that you don't get unless you do something ridiculously stupid. Hurt bad when I lost access to that one. I'd craft a bunch of 2nd lvl pop's for that one. - Lesser Empower rods - GREAT for Insignias of healing, with Augment healing thats a nice average of 30 HPS as a heal spread out to the whole party as a 3rd level slot (easy to pearl back after the fight) Good for Battle Clerics who haven't gone the cheaseweasal approach. Was thinking of this and wasn't sure how it works. One GM rules that only the variable dice are empowered, another rules that the total is empowered. So let me ask another stupid question. Lets say a 3rd lvl warmage with +5 edge casts scorching ray and a 3rd level cleric casts cure moderate wounds. Does that mean they empower the 4d6 and the 2d8, adding the edge and CL after - or do they roll 4d6+5 and 1d8+3 and empower the totals? It would be sweet to use a 7th lvl spell slot to cast a quickened empowered insignia of healing that healed for (1d8+10)*1.5 I'm also told that I have to hold a rod to use it. Does that mean I tie it to my belt and grasp it to use it? Normal Extend rod: for 11,000GP this is a great way to have Heroes feast last all day, as well as extend those FoMs to last the whole dungeon... yeah...maybe. PEARLS OF POWER! I want to craft these, but I have tons of other stuff I wanna get before I can afford these. |

The empower rules cover this in their example using magic missile. The total should be what is empowered. Just a note - you'd need a greater rod of empower to empower that quickened insignia of healing. It's memorized in a 7th level slot so you need the highest level rod. |

It seems like prestige classes are always the way to go in higher levels, yet I've never found one that seemed better than a simple straight cleric. I have ruathar access but it doesn't excite me. Pure Cleric isn't bad, but Ruathar 3 is a nice addition to a Cleric 12 of Kelanen - namely, you end up losing 3 hp and some mostly useless turning for a nice bump to saves(+2 Ref/Will compared to straight cleric), huge adjustment to skill points, and some other useful things. That adjustment to skill points is the really key thing - it isn't hard, especially with retraining, to max out Spot in those 3 levels. Possibly even Listen, too. Toss on low-light and the special pluses, it is a great deal. That will easily over time save you those 3 hp... |
