I submitted my thread on my sorcerer i was going into energy sub and admix with, well recently i got access to the occular spell meta magic feat out of the lords of madness. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with it and if its worth it?

Ocular spell (pg 181 of Lords of Madness) basically lets you cast a spell into each of your eyes. They are then stored there until you use a full-round action to fire them as beams from your eye(s).

It changes the spells to ray spells with a range of 60' I think they can only be stored for up to 8 hours and there are restrictions on which spells can be stored/cast as ocular spells.

The example in the book is casting/storing two scorching ray spells in your eyes, storing them until you wish to cast them as a full-round action from your eyes.

I think it's a cool Feat and good too if you can land Rays but I don't think it's terribly overpowered. It's probably better for a Sorceror than for a Wizard because Quicken is so much harder for Sorcs and they have fewer spells to choose from anyway so picking 'the right 2' for the eyes in advance isn't such a limitation ...and they have more slots to burn on Metamagic.

I would take it if it's a serious option but I haven't used or even seen it in action so my opinion is entirely theoretical.

It might be interesting for a fighter/wizard type to have a couple of back-up spells stored in the ole eyeballs. I bet the spellswords out there could think of some sneaky things to do with it. And firing them from your eyes leaves your hands free.

Is there a situation where using this could help a wizard who is grappled? Let's hear from the brain trust!

Yeah, like whenever you are grappled.

Remember, you've pretty much cast the spell. So no need to get out components, concentrate, or win a grapple check. Just let it rip.

I have access to it on my sorcerer. I'm retraining my 6th level feat into twin post RHOD. I'll be taking Ocular Spell at 12th. I'll just toss a couple of twinned Scorching Rays into my eyes, and let them go whenever I feel the need. Sure, it'll burn half of my 6th level spells for the day, but I sort of think that 12 rays @ 4d6 damage each as a full round action would be kind of neat.

Not sure that this will work - remember Twinned bumps up the level by four, and Occular spell bumps up the level by 2, so a twinned ocular spell scorching ray would take an 8th level spell slot...

Yeah - when my sorc / wild mage gets it, at L15 (I can't retrain into it because I didn't have the Knowledge (Dungeoneering) prereq when I took any of my earlier feats) she might do something like storing two empowered scorching rays and casting a quickened scorching ray. It'll be cooler at L16 when she can add split ray to the mix (two split empowered ocular rays + quickened empowered ray), or do ocular split ray enervations + quickened enervation, but I guess I'll just have to wait for the high-level campaign ;) I was delighted when I got access to the feat with that character - she's a ray-specialist so it's quite powerful for her mechanically, and from a flavor perspective, being able to shoot rays out of her eyes is just very cool :) I probably would NOT take it with my wannabe-shadowcraft-mage sorceress, as she doesn't have enough spells to which the feat is applicable.

Does it bump it by 2?

Man, I must be reading that description too fast.

EDIT: Oh, sheesh, it's on the second column on the page, and I never looked over because it appeared to be complete. I don't think I'll be picking this one up anymore.

I would require at least a concentration check to release them in a grapple (if I allowed it at all) since it's a full round action and you could probably only target others in the grapple.

I could maybe understand why you would only let them target the person in the grapple, but the spells have already been cast. What's your justification for a concentration check?

o man thats friggin awesome!

Yeah, I don't see why a concentration check would be needed (unless it would have something to do with damage you receive while in the grapple). You just look at the fella/thing/bear warrior/etc and BLAST EM!

It's a full round action to release the spells (..or I may be going loopy but I'm pretty sure it is) so it's clearly not a quick and easy thing to do.
