| Asaris04-24-07, 01:01 PM | I'm working on a knight build, want to go Knight/Paladin/Knight of the Hart. The paladin part is optional. Right now, this is what I have for his first level. I'm planning on taking 3 levels of knight, and then levels of paladin until I can take knight of the hart, but of course, I might change my mind. I'm planning on using a bastard sword and probably taking EWP: Bastard Sword at some point. Clegis S: 15 D: 10 C: 14 I: 10 W: 12 Ch: 14 1. Knight: Mounted Combat, Power Attack Handle Animal: 4 Ride: 4 Know(Nob): 4 Any advice is appreciated. |

| Grantor04-24-07, 01:24 PM | Clegis S: 15 D: 10 C: 14 I: 10 W: 12 Ch: 14 1. Knight: Mounted Combat, Power Attack Knights get Mounted Combat as a free feat at second level. That would free up a 1st level slot so that you can start with EWP:Bastard Sword. |
| Timlagor04-24-07, 02:59 PM | Why do you want to use a Bastard Sword? You can always Retrain the original Mounted Combat away but you (probably) won't be able to afford a mount for at least the first 1/3 of the first level. What book is Knight of the Hart in? Paladin 2 is pretty nice but I don't think there's much point in Pal 3 if you aren't taking Pal4 (which is very good). If you take Pal4, be sure to pick up something nice to do with the Turn Attempts. |
| King Kashue04-24-07, 03:14 PM | What book is Knight of the Hart in? None...It's like the Glaives, it's a Greyhawk specific PrC...Details here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lgpg/20061031a) |
| Asaris04-24-07, 03:42 PM | I figure a bastard sword is a nice weapon to use two-handed when I want and with a shield when I want. I thought about a spiked chain, but that just seemed a bit too cheezy. |
| Arvagor04-24-07, 10:46 PM | What book is Knight of the Hart in?They are actually a tripartite organization. Details on the Knights of the Hart as a whole can be found here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lgpg/20060926a The "sub" organizations (which is what one would actually belong to) are the Knights of Furyondy, the Knights of the High Forest, and the Knights of Veluna. Details for each: Furyondy: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lgpg/20061031a High Forest: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lgpg/20061128a Veluna: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lgpg/20061226a None of the above are Open access (to my knowledge); however, Veluna provides access to the Knights of Veluna PrC through the "Order of the Hart" meta-org. |

You can always Retrain the original Mounted Combat away but you (probably) won't be able to afford a mount for at least the first 1/3 of the first level. I've found its very good to buy a light warhorse with your starting money and skimp on the armour. Usually you throw out the old armour anyway, so why spend more than you have to? With 240gp starting gold: Light warhorse 150gp Riding Saddle 10 gp longsword 15 gp Javelin 1gp Heavy wooden shield 7 gp Leather armor 10 gp backpack worth of stuff/bedroll etc ~20gp Leaves enough money for Medium lifestyle in an Intro or Regional/Metaregional adventure. The warhorse at 1st level is a huge combat boost when you can use it. With 450gp earned in your first adventure, you can upgrade strait to MW weapon or armour and fill out the gaps in your equipment. |
| Timlagor04-25-07, 10:59 AM | A Bastard Sword does 1 point more damage than a Longsword on average. That's unlikely to be worth a Feat for you and it's the only difference (aside from a few gp on the price) ...unless you are going into Exotic Weapon Master. Looks like an interesting PrC ..I remember meeting one (NPC) in an absolutely terrible module now :/ BAB8 requirement makes Pal 4 a definite option. How much time are you planning to spend mounted? -the PrC doesn't seem to advance your mount which is rather a pain. |
| Timlagor04-25-07, 11:01 AM | For some reason I always forget that War Horses come in a Light variety. That's certainly an option but I wouldn't want to find I couldn't ride my horse in the combats after picking it. Leather Armour is going to really hurt your AC too. |
| Asaris04-25-07, 12:04 PM | I think I'd rather start off with something a bit more substantial in terms of armor (chain shirt, maybe), and invest in a heavy warhorse when I can afford it. Knight in full plate gets pretty heavy for a light warhorse. The mount's not really going to be a focus, I think. It depends. I live in St. Louis right now, so play a lot of Dyvers and Verbobonc mods, but in about a year I'm moving up to Michigan, and so I'll be playing more Furyondy mods (thus, the knight). I'd rather not depend on the mount, but then again, I figure as long as I have it, I may as well take the associated feat tree. I am a knight, after all. |
