| Donald_Cannith07-18-07, 01:22 AM | Let me know if this looks powerful enough/ useful enough for LG. knight protector of ehlonna F Human Flan Str: 16 Dex: 14 Con: 14 the rest 10s 1 knight Improved Buckler Defense, Short haft (retrain at level 3 for weapon focus:glaive) 2 Fighter Power Attack 3 knight cleave 4 Fighter Combat Reflexes 5 Fighter 6Fighter Great Cleave 7 Knight Weapon Specialization: Glaive 8 Knight Protector: 9 Knight protector: 10: Wild Plains Outrider: Melee Weapon mastery 11: WPO 12: WPO: Close Quarters combat 13: Fighter: 14 Fighter: 15 Fighter:Defensive sweep, slashing flurry Basically, I want to have an effective Mounted Fighter without focusing on charging. The best I could come up with was this or maybe strait fighter WPO |
| jstorrie07-18-07, 01:47 AM | A reach weapon is a good place to start, if you're trying to use Knight Protector–the more you can pop that Cleave, the better, and that requires covering a large area. I suspect that Knight 3 / Fighter 4 is probably the best entry to Knight Protector, unless you're trying to do some sort of Fighter/Druid/Knight Protector/Hospitaler/Warshaper mutt to get crazy reach. Keep an eye out for classes that require Iron Will to get in–the only one that comes to my mind is Menacing Brute, but I wouldn't even discount that, given that it can get you Staggering Strike without BAB loss. |
| Donald_Cannith07-18-07, 01:53 AM | Can I hit adjacent and reach opponents while mounted with say a glaive? |
| LachlarlanIII07-18-07, 09:41 AM | Can I hit adjacent and reach opponents while mounted with say a glaive? That's an interesting question. If one can designate one of their squares as the originating point of the attack, I would say yes, but I would also give the target of said attack a cover bonus to their AC. |
| Ira_Dei07-18-07, 11:47 AM | While on a large mount, you are assumed to occupy all four squares, so I'd probably say no. However, I'd have no problem as a DM with a player nominating one space on the mount as theirs, and attacking as normal from that square only. But I'd then not allow them to change to easily (maybe a swift action, or free action like a 5' step? limited by a ride roll?) |
| KShaver07-18-07, 03:33 PM | Can I hit adjacent and reach opponents while mounted with say a glaive? I would say no, you occupy all the squares of the mount and thus anything adjacent to the mount is adjacent to you. Sure you have a larger dead zone while on a horse, but you also have a larger reach area to make up for it. That being said if it were allowed for some strange reason, and if your swing had to cross the mount, then I would insist you count the mount as cover for your opponent. /Wanders off mumbling something about Triad members having NPCs lean back and attack with lances through the horses they are mounted on to hit adjacent targets with no penalty. |
| jstorrie07-18-07, 03:58 PM | You can't hit them with your glaive, but you can with your armor spikes... |
| bitznarf07-18-07, 04:44 PM | If one can designate one of their squares as the originating point of the attack, I would say yes, but I would also give the target of said attack a cover bonus to their AC. This is how I rule on it personally, I also don't mind if a DM rules the way jstorrie does. Either are within the scope of the poorly modeled mounted rules in my opinion. |
| Donald_Cannith07-18-07, 10:55 PM | the armor spikes are a good idea i had not thought of that..any thoughts on how to improve the build itself? |
| Donald_Cannith07-19-07, 02:25 PM | bump |
| bitznarf07-19-07, 03:11 PM | You still need a way to get a decent, durable mount. |
| Donald_Cannith07-19-07, 04:13 PM | well i figure i could just buy them and once the mount went down deal with it. its not like i have aton of feats invested in the mount |
| bitznarf07-19-07, 04:37 PM | You have 3 whole class levels invested in mounted combat. And at higher APLs your mount is going to go down/be incapacitated from the first area of effect attack. You might be able to get by with something like a figurine of wondrous power(ebony fly). And I am fairly sure that you cannot use Supreme Cleave from the back of a mount. However as I don't have the rules text in front of me I can't be sure. You appear to be taking 2 different concepts, ones that clash with each other, and trying to fit them into the same PC. |
| Donald_Cannith07-19-07, 04:56 PM | well then why does the class require mounted combat. If it doesnt work like that then the class sucks or the pre-req is stupid |
| bitznarf07-19-07, 05:09 PM | the class sucks or the pre-req is stupidSounds about right. I could be wrong though, I don't have the rules text in front of me. |
| Mommy was an Orc07-19-07, 05:21 PM | well then why does the class require mounted combat. If it doesnt work like that then the class sucks or the pre-req is stupid As always, particularly if you're taking WPO, Beastmaster 1(or more) is a useful dip for a Horse to ride. |
| mowaca07-23-07, 09:22 PM | You can't hit them with your glaive, but you can with your armor spikes... That makes no sense - with that interpretation you can't use a lance while riding a large mount. |
| jstorrie07-23-07, 09:44 PM | I don't see why you couldn't? |
| Ralis07-23-07, 10:06 PM | From another glaive wielder to another, Don't bother with short haft. You can take a free five step back without provoking an attack of opportunity. It also saves you the annoyance of having to retrain it into weapon focus. I'd also do some research and make sure you can take advantage of improved buckler defense with a two handed weapon. (Some DMs allow it other don't) |
