This is probably a bit premature, but it's always fun to speculate. :)

If you get the Kobold creation card, what kind of Kobold would you make? Why?

For me, I'd probably make a straight Druid. Start off with a strength of 4  and hope I survive long enough to get Wild Shape to offset the penalty.

I also think it's funny when a 3 ft. tall critter turns into a 15 ft. tall tree-man. :)

It's a little foolish to speculate without knowing what feats and substitution levels will be unlocked with it, if any.

I'm hoping for Kobold Rogue, Dragonblood Sorcerer, and the Dragon Wings feat. I'd be most likely putting together a Spellwarp Sniper.

My bet is on the card opening absolutely nothing other than just plain ol' kobold.

The card references the Mist Kingdom, its called Sojourner from Mist Kingdom, it will be extremely disappointing if its just a regular kobold. Thie Mist Kingdom in Greyhawk is located in the Vohoun Ocean, and not much is written about it(I find hardly a reference, it is described as being in the Vohoun Ocean in Dragon #350).

It is supposedly home to a powerful civilization of reptilian creatures, I certainly hope that isn't just normal kobolds.

The card wont open anything but the Kobold itself. You will either find the Racial substitution levels thru special missions or in mods written.

It might be possible to see the feats from Races of the Dragon opened next LGCS.

But hey I could be wrong. Wont be the 1st time

Retraining ;)

RetrainingThat obviously works for the substitution levels, and while it probably works for feats that "must be taken at first level" there's something that doesn't sit right with me about that. I think for retraining the feat needs to be a legal choice for you both at the time you would have taken it and for your character right now -- and that's just not true for a feat that says it must be taken at first level.

It is supposedly home to a powerful civilization of reptilian creatures, I certainly hope that isn't just normal kobolds. The Mist Kingdom is an archipelago of seven islands, draped in mists, ruled by a family of nine mist dragons. It lies south of the southern edge of the Amedio Jungle by about 150 miles. So it is about a thousand miles or more south of the closest part of the Flanaess.

So, yeah, if folks care about it they should come up with a sensible explanation how they got off the islands and why ended up in their region thousands of miles away and not killed along the way. ;) I'm not expecting much.

Read all about the Mist Kingdom in the 1999 AD&D Scarlet Brotherhood accessory. It takes up about 3 paragraphs in the book, page 66.

so its begun...

So this is a new campaign card that lets u play as a kobold? its not a special race just available for Greyhawk Ruins is it? I'd hate for that plot arc to be ruined by the appearance of the yipping little rat dragons.

I believe that Britt posted in another thread.. that the kobolds was "more than just a race, but he wasnt sure how much info he could blab... " or something like that..

Just a guess.. but I would say the Kobold card will require you to be from this new CORE region, and allow some variant of the standard kobold...

I will probably build a Kobold runs away from home..
(Special Mission) to change regions to the Bandit Kingdoms.. and Joind the local Gnomes.. (= Stoneblessed-Gnome)...

Fighter/Rogue/Sorcerer build.. (with Kobold substitution).. get Mighty Wholop spells... (so the weapons deal damage as if they were 1+ size(s) bigger.. Take BladeBravo Levels.. and all the "Fight the big guy" feats...

Rolling damage at low levels should be easy.. .. weapon = 1d3-4 ... thats 1 point... :(

You may be restricted by the card, just like the snow elf. (In fact I would say there is a darn good chance of that due to precedent) So I wouldn't start planning something that complex.

On another note, a stoneblessed Kobold Gnome is just sooo crazy it scares me.

As for builds, we will have to see if any of the 'kobold' classes become available, if not I will start pestering some of my local mod writers for special missions for PrCs (yay NONC rules).

Dragon wings and dragonblood feats would be cool, especially with a sorcerer type kobold.

Kobold single-class Barbarian...

18 Base Str down to 14...you could be back to 18 while raging!

40' movement speed, raging, small size 'yipping little rat dragon' that starts at 1d8+6 damage with a greatsword!

Bet they won't see that coming...

Something tells me that an AC tank would work better with the small size + natural armor....

Thats the way I roll...

Hap, the ferral halfing outrider on his goat wielding a harpoon. (towing a siege weapon behind him)

Zan, the fey loving death cultist druid sacred fist (moving towards retirment as a blighter)

...coming soon: Cachow the kobold gnome blade bravo who enjoys taking scalps from those he kills. "Properly cooked.. the skull meat is VERY tender and moist."
rutrow424

Obviously depending on the options allowed...

I always have thought going the tank fighter route (using the Meepo miniature). It will be an early struggle with the low STR and CON, but could be offset by some of the cool options that might open up. Worst case scenario - dragon disciple.

Second choice would be the proto-typical kobold sorcerer.

I wouldn't be surprised if its a jungle kobold out of Races of the Dragon, given the location of the Mist Kingdom in Greyhawk that means a -2 int instead of a -2 con, which is a pretty good tradeoff for a fighter kobold :-)

Except for the part where you're dealing a MAX of 1d6+2 if you spend 16 points on strength. Maybe if you added a bit of sorcerer for bull's strength and took the goad feat...

Build: Kobold Sorc 15

Concentrate stat points in Cha, Con, Dex, maybe a little Int.

Take advantage of your small size and good dex to lob Orb spells and rays.

Feats: (1) Spell Focus (Conjuration), (3) Empower Spell, (6) Metamagic School Focus, (9) Rapid Metamagic (and retrain Empower to Quicken at 10th), (12) Twin Spell, (15) Sculpt Spell

Skills: Concentration

Spells: Guided Shot, Orb spells, Grease, Glitterdust, Melf's Acid Arrow, etc.

Instead of selecting Spell Focus (Conjuration) at 1st and Empower at 3rd, you could select Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot and retrain them later on.

My two plans for kobold PCs asre somewhast simple. I wan to do a fighter/ranger(for skills and rapid shot) build with the crossbow sniper feat worked in with all the sources of extras damage and wierd ranged feats. Obviously rapid reload to be able to fire multiple times per round and things like ranged disarm and pin. I could do this with a halfling, but i have the perfect mini for a kobold doing it.

Of course another idea is the draconic legacy feat chain. It's nice or even celestial sorcerer heritage, but draconic is by and large cooler.

Not to get off topic but can the arrows in races of wild be purchased as bolts?
Sieylianna

I don't want to see a horde of kobolds as PCs, although I would tolerate a handful in the campaign. It appears that some of the triads agree and it will be open season on kobolds as monsters in some regions.

I will be very surprised to see much in the way of support (feats, pclasses, racial substitution) for kobolds outside the original card and core modules. I think the odds of getting a special mission for a kobold from most triads will be slim and none. So I wouldn't count on any special access in your build.

Scout -> Combat Trapsmith

Eventually adding a level or two of ranger in to pick up swift hunter.

Starting on backstory. A master trapsmith/carpetbagger traveling around because 'kobold' traps are known to be in high demand. His sales sign is a picture of his smiling kobold face surrounded by a picture of one of his specialty bear traps, and the sign will clearly indicate 'Genuine Kobold Traps' in common (some mispelling expected in the final version).

The Mist Kingdoms are tropical islands about 1,000 miles from the southernmost part of the Flanaess—through the Scarlet Brotherhood controlled waters by ocean, across the other side of the Amedio Jungle by land—shrouded in mists to prevent sailing ships from ever finding them, or attacked on sight by the mist dragons living there. Just how this little guy know what is "in demand" anywhere, in particular the Flanaess.

That's pretty much the Yeomanry's stance as well. We are a very superstitious people, and add to the fact that we have trouble with kobolds in some of our outlying villages, and yeah, you will be attacked on sight.

Don't feel bad though, Dragon Disciples get the same treatment. (Its a dragon man! Get the crossbows Cleatus).

...That's what's supposed to happen. It shouldn't result in an outright witch hunt, but penalties to social skills should be expected.

Even the common half-orc has an extra -2 to social skills here in Keoland...I'd expect the same for any other species known for being descended from evil.

He is already an astute salesman on the mainland. He couldn't very well sell traps to kobolds in the Mist Kingdoms, they can all make their own and don't need his overpriced contraptions. Once this new huge influx of kobolds to the mainland hits, and everyone wants kobold traps, he'll hear about that.

Usually evil? In the last like 3 or 4 mods I've run that had anything to do with Kobolds in it, the kobolds were like paladins!

(Sometimes I really hate the Triads' Ruin Everyone Else's Fun Ability.)

I plan on making lots of kobolds and see what works. I'm thinking either a Kobold Knight of Heronious for up in the Shield Lands, or maybe something even worse. Kobold Healer....hmmm...

Yeah, Keoland is fun that way. Greyhawk will probably interrogate Kobolds at the gate just like they do to Half Orcs.

And Morgen, don't go Kobold Healer, go with Cleric or Druid! That way, you'll be able to dish out healing AND damage.

You choose the cards for your character at the beginning of the game. You can then use them on your cohort as well, AFAIK. This would have Table variation I imagine. I have however never seen any precedent allowing cohorts to have cards.

Got a new one similar to the last one only using Trapsmith instead of Combat Trapsmith, i.e. utilizing the GR build options.

1. Kobold Rogue Racial Sub
2. Bard
3. Rogue
4. Bard
5. Kobold Rogue Racial Sub
6-10. Trapsmith
11+ Sublime Cord

Trapsmith has an excellent spell list, but you've maxed it out by 5th level. Because of the Sublime Cord's unusual spell progression it meshes perfectly with trapsmith. Some cross-classing of skills and/or retraining is definately going to be required, but I think its doable.

Because of the skewed spell levels on the trapsmith spell list this character could even make some crazy cheap wands off decent spells (Knock as a 1st level wand, wall of stone as a 3rd level wand). Scribe scroll could also be well used from their spell list.

The character would also benefit hugely from low level momento magicas, like getting your haste back with a 1st level momento.

Other ideas on how to make good use of their spell list would be appreciated. The next best idea I had was to use Dragon Disciple to dramatically expand the castings per day the trapsmith gets (which would mean removing bard from 2nd and 4th level and replacing with rogue, swashbuckler, fighter or other meaningfull combat class).

I was thinking of making either:

A high-AC kobold rogue, dipping sorcerer to get reduce person (the stealthiest little rogue EVER!) who would then tumble into enemy squares for a sneak attack fiesta...

A kobold cavalry druid-knight-beastmaster...

07-25-07, 02:06 PM
Trapsmith looks good, but caster level is going to be really low without practiced spellcaster which I think is necessary for most builds looking to take trapsmith level (caster lvl 1 haste kind of underwhelming yes?)

I was originally thinking of doing something like this
Kobold 10,16,12,16,8,8
1 Rogue Racial Sub Dragonwought (max disguise and keep it maxed)
2 Fighter Racial Sub
3 Rogue Dragonwings (just can't pass up the 'cool' factor..might be able to pass on by but...)
4 fighter racial sub
5 rog
6+ trapsmith (it's not completely clear how what trapsmith's caster level is determined or if they have no spell failure in lt armor, but I have to guess so as it's 'bard-like')

and I have no idea past that, but dragon disciple is a good idea....
rutrow424

07-25-07, 03:05 PM
I'm still trying to make a fighter build work:

S:12 D:16 C:12 I:10 W:12 CH:8

I would take the 2nd and 4th fighter racial sub levels and use stat bumps for STR; the other possibilities include, but are not limited to

1) dragonwrought, wings, and imp wings for the dragon flying goodness, then hover/fly-by attack to go with WF/WS/MWM

2) wings, imp wings, and hover (w/ dragonwrought if the feats work) to go the archery route; probably not use both the sub levels to save feats to get PB/Precise/Rapid/WF/WS/RWM

3) dragon tail to go w/ other defensive options to make a cork build (imp nat armor, dodge, shield/armor specialization, shield ward), still trying to get WF/WS/MWM to present some threat

4) some easy way to get to dragon disciple while piling on the fighter levels to get MWM and +4 STR by level 9; I think this may only be possible if Rite of Passage applies (it doesn't), otherwise you delay one of them until 12.

Obviously, the biggest challenge to a kobold fighter is making them an offensive threat - the triple whammy of small size and double STR penalty needs to be offset through a combo of PrC, tactical tricks/feats, and other options. In the end I'll probably be a sorcerer when I realize the fighter plan won't really work.

Exactly, I was expecting to pick up practised spellcaster at 6th, then craft wand at 9th.

1 Rogue Racial Sub Dragonwrought (max disguise and keep it maxed)

If you plan on taking Dragon Disciple later you have to drop dragonwrought (or retrain it) to be able to get into the class, no dragons allowed.

2 Fighter Racial Sub

I thought about it, but the character will probbaly be finessing his weapons, which doesn't make spear focus very usefull. I'd rather go regular fighter or swashbuckler to pick up finesse.

6+ trapsmith (it's not completely clear how what trapsmith's caster level is determined or if they have no spell failure in lt armor, but I have to guess so as it's 'bard-like')

Yeah I would assume same restrictions as bard, light armor and must have vocal component.

and I have no idea past that, but dragon disciple is a good idea....

Aside from Dragon Disciple and Sublime Cord there are a lot of rogue and spellcasting classes that a Trapsmith can get into, but I can't think of too many others that compliment their spellcasting as well.

Well it's to do with catering for all types of players.

Personally I am well aware my Terry Pratchett style anarchronist approach to D&D really annoys some people but thats just how I am and how I write. Whilst I was a little put off to have a half finished mod featuring a gnomish ski resort knocked back by local triad (and I was planning some really good James Bond style encounters slogging it out with flying badguys high up on top of a cable car suspended several 1000' over the valley), and I also know someone else that had a fully completed Mod featuring a Paladin beholder rejected, I can fully understand the reasoning behind it. Many players like there D&D to be more conservative and "historically correct".

My opinion is that these types of adventures are perfectly appropriate for D&D, but not for Greyhawk. Greyhawk is a world of intrigue, intricate plots, betrayal, politics, and subterfuge; you never know who is really good or bad or right or wrong, or those designations are less important than in other settings. Anachronisms and campy flair are just not right for LG, IMO. They are great for some other settings, though.

Which is precisely why I am not actually complaining. I can see the reason that triads need to take that line.

But by the same token it's also the way I write .. I have always found traditional Sword and Board "High" fantasy stifling and boring .. I would literally agonise for week's to produce even a page of "High Fantasy" versus an encounter in an hour or too of a more wacky style I relate to.

In the end, I will continue to write wacky stuff and triad will let through what they find acceptable and knock back the other 80% :) Its great fun to write any way even if it gets knocked back eventually.

But does a warmage get any language dependent spells?

On a different note:

I would enjoy some more lighthearted and possibly campy mods. It wouldn't have to be many, maybe two or three cores a year. I know it would take the edge off of the more serious mods.

Heck, Clipping Wings was a lot of fun because it was so quirky. Not to mention that I'd like to see better humor in a mod than bad puns and twelve different synonyms for "Fat". (Rotund, stout, pudgy, hefty, etc.)

The Mist Kingdom is more or less directly south of the eastern tip of the Amedio Peninsula. The Pirate Isles lie to the east, while the Isles of Axuxal lie to the west. There is an island to the north, and a large island to the south that is unidentified.

Here is my fair use quote from the Scarlet Brotherhood (really becoming more and more important in LG; you really should consider buying it - there are electronic copies for sale on the web):

The Mist Kingdom

Leader: Fundamental Thought (mist dragon matriarch)
Population: 9 (mist dragons)
Demihuman: none
Humanoids: Beastmen (200)
Alignment: N
Resources: rare woods, platinum

The seven islands known as the Mist Kingdom are nearly always shrouded in fog, rendering them invisible beyond one mile. The most powerful inhabitants of the islands - an old family of mist dragons - prefer it this way, avoiding contact with other creatures; only a few tribes of beastmen are allowed on the island, for all other intelligent creatures have been driven away or slain by the dragons. Neither the dragons nor the beastmen produce or harvest an excess of goods, so the kingdom does not export any resources.

The first two mist dragons came to this islands over 700 years ago. A century after their arrival, Fundamental Thought and Sincere Assertion raised a clutch of two, one of whom left the islands to wander the former home of its parents. The three dragons were joined by Vehement Debate in 102 CY, who fathered a clutch of two with Fundamental Thought. Since then, the dragons have hatched three more young, and now each of the nine dragons claims a part of the seven islands.

This family of mist dragons is somewhat more social than others of their type; although they do not go out of their way to see each other, they encounter one or more of their relatives at least once or twice a year. The youngest sometimes visit the mainland to sample the different flavors of mist available, bu the elders are content to breath the fog of their home island and contemplate philosophy. Every few decades, one or more attacks the pirates who try to establish camps in the Mist Kingdom; a few pirates are always left to carry the tale back to their fellows. The dragons seem content with their current numbers, not yet wishing to to expand outward from their secluded home.

Mist dragons are written up here on the Wizards site:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mm/20031226a

So a few questions. Why are Kobolds not mentioned here? Does this mean they only came to the islands in very recent times?

Also, sojourner == a temporary resident. Does this mean a temp. resident of the Mist Kingdom, or of the Flaeness?
Eric Anondson

Why are Kobolds not mentioned here?Because they didn't exist in canon until these cards. Now I'm guessing it's been retconned that the kobolds have always been there.
