| Sieylianna12-31-07, 10:11 AM | It's a waste of time. It's just not as much of a waste of time as before. And even though TU for adventures have gone away, you still can not play adventures once you hit zero TU. Ed |
| bitznarf12-31-07, 03:00 PM | Hitting 0 TUs does not cause a problem. Going negative is what causes the problem. Note that things like retraining don't cause you to go negative. They cause you to borrow TUs from the next year. AFAIK, only TU *penalties* can cause a PC to become unplayable due to a TU issue. |

Right, but using up all your spare TUs for maybe 50 gold a mod can put you into a situation where the penalties suddenly do have an effect. Who wants to miss the final mod because they played with a really bad party the mod prior? You know, someone goes at a convention, "Hey, I've got 2 characters near retirement - I'll do something crazy stupid in the mod before the final one as I can't play him again anyway." - but he does it slowly enough that the rest of the party tries to save him and then everyone gets arrested by the Greyhawk constables... |
| bitznarf12-31-07, 03:32 PM | True. Though IIRC you can get out of that penalty at least by paying some gold. I never said that I would recommend spending your TUs in this fashion. Simply that being at 0 TUs doesn't stop you from playing. |
| Churcher12-31-07, 10:00 PM | Well, I'll admit it...I used to do this. I did it with my Scout in his early levels. After spending 6 TUs over the period I made 96 GP. Not bad, mainly for the fact that I had enough of a Tumble to do so. That's after I failed 2 attempts to do so. So, for new characters? Not a problem really, since they get 52 TU's to do whatever with. Save at least 12 TU's for Retrains, 10 for Misc. uses, and the rest to do whatever. So, for the older characters? It's not enough to warrent the attempt. Yet, the extra 100 gp near the beginning is worth it, IMHO. |
| copperwyrmling12-31-07, 10:26 PM | Eh, I'll probably do this at least a bit with my dervish, using Tumble - TU penalties are pretty rare, and if I don't spend the TUs on something, he's going to end the campaign with 40+ left. Getting a few thousand gold out of those TUs (if I somehow spent them all) is better than nothing. |

The point of using your profession was to offset the cost of upkeep at the end of the adventure and earn a little something extra. A lot of PC's have acquired titles thus becoming minor nobles and never pay for upkeep beyond standard. A few get free rich upkeep if they own land and can make more off of that than their actual profession. |
