Hello all,

I have a Rogue2/Conjurer4 who I am going to give the feat Metamagic School Focus at Level 7 (Conjurer 5, the wizard bonus feat.) The great dilemma I have right now, is which Metamagic Feat to choose.

My character is going for Spellwarp Sniper/Unseen Seer/Arcane Trickster, and he's heavily focused on rays, orbs and other such direct damage spells.

If I choose a lesser metamagic feat, with only a +1 bump attached, I can use it on my first level spells, but I'll have to choose between Empower Spell or Split Ray at ninth level. (I'd rather have both, if no other option seems better.) I'm open to recommendations for +1 boost metamagic feats.

If I choose Empower Spell at level 6, I can't use it till level 7, but it will become very effective at level 7.

I've considered other options, but none of them seem as good as taking a metamagic feat/Metamagic School Focus.

And before you recommend Retraining, I WILL NOT retrain anything else this year. I'm already down to 20 TUs and I already retrained from Generalist Wizard to Conjurer.

Thanks in Advance:
Hariman

personally, I'd be tempted to go with craft wonderous if you don't already have it. Half price stat pump item can make you more effective all around...

Pick up a metamagic feat that you can use now, like Empower. Empower is still nice to have in the long run (no reason you can't Empower and Split a spell for even higher damage, right?) but if you find in the very late game that you're not using it, you can always retrain it to Quicken (NEXT year.)

Just to be clear: you're talking about taking a metamagic feat as your L6 feat and metamagic school focus at L7?

If you're a Bright Sands PC, with access to Fiery Spell and Searing Spell, they may be worthwhile. Nonlethal Substitution is also decent. In your position, though, I would probably take Empower Spell at 6th and Split Ray at 9th.

Definitely Empower Spell or CWI (which should really be your 3rd level Feat)

But I don't have an excess of TUs right now. Even spending only one TU to get two different +2 items means that I spent the money on buying scrolls and adding the necessary spells to the spellbook. (Cat's Grace and Fox's Cunning unless I'm mistaken)

Although that is tempting, considering my character's LACK of gold. Stupid Gold stealing AR penalties.

But I only have 4 level of Wizard, so I can't use empower right now. (Hence my dilemma. And Empower/Split Ray are the metamagic feats that I have been considering.

Correct, Metamagic feat = Level 6, Metamagic School Focus = Level 7.

This character isn't a bright sands PC.

Extend is a nice low-level metamagic. I also like Retributive and Smiting.

Are there any metamagic feats that you would apply to your first level spells? I can't think of any personally. I'd take the hit and grab empower. It's only useless for a level. Far better than the people who would grab quicken at first and wait until 9th to use it. (Though I might consider CWI at 9th.)

Hey! I resemble that comment, though my cleric took Quicken at 1st because he took Divine Metamagic at 3rd. Well, 3rd and 4th levels were good to him. 5th level came with the new LGCS. Now?... now, he's just got really awful physical stats.

At least you get a free retrain for DMM, and the option to retrain for Quicken.

On the subject at hand...

Extend Spell is one feat that I did consider. Widen, Enlarge and the other PHB +1 metamagic feats are rather ho-hum to me. (Although enlarge would let me cast orbs at up to 80 feet.)

Smiting Spell is pretty good. But I'd be using it with a bow, or crossbow. And the best spell that I can metamagic with Smiting Spell right now is Shocking Grasp.

Retributive Spell has the limitation of "I shouldn't be in melee in the first place" because 37 HP at level 6 is not a good way to survive melee.

Earthbound Spell... is limited by the fact that the spell must be placed on the ground, and the enemy must then trigger it.

Consecrate Spell has it's uses. I have encountered some enemies with immunities.

But Empower does increase the damage done, and with Split Ray it gets even better. Especially since I'm going into Spellwarp Sniper.

I'm probably going to go with Empower Spell/Split Ray.

Widen would be great as a +1 Metamagic Feat.. but it's actually +4 (+3?)
