this may well be a dumb question, but here's the situation

I have a half-elf rogue, ideally looking at Temple Raider once i get access to it

However, my BAB is still short so i will need to level once more before i meet the prereqs.

I'm currently Rogue 5/Swash 1(so i could not totally fail at fighting)

Instead of Rogue 6, I was considering taking Ranger 1, since my rogues lost in the Gnarley enough without a ranger as it is, and a strong fort/reflex save increase.

However,I'm not quite sure if this would cause me to take an exp hit or not, and exactly how Prestige classes affect multi-classing. If someone could give me advice, it would be most appreciative, thanks.

You're a half elf, so you're favored class is the base class you have the most levels in. In your case, this is Rogue. For the purpose of figuring multiclass penalties, consider your character to not have any Rogue levels at all.

To get an experience penalty after this, your levels in other classes have to be more than one off from each other. You could go Swashbuckler 1/Ranger 2/Rogue 5 and still be fine. Going to Swashbuckler 1/Ranger 3/Rogue 5 would incur a 20% experience and gold (in LG) penalty.

Prestige classes do not impact multiclass penalty calculations unless they are specifically noted as doing so. I've never see them do anything but relieve multiclass burdens, and that only in the case of Fochlucan Lyrists that I can recall. Consider PrCs to be favored classes and the calculations will go correctly.

Rogue 6 will boost your flagging Will save and give you a BAB though. Without looking into it deeply, I'd just stick with Rogue for one more.

As a half-elf, your highest level class is your preferred class. So you're fine. Prestige classes never cause XP penalties.

Prestige classes do not count so ignore any PrC levels when multiclassing.

In addition half elves also get to ignore there highest non PrC as a half elf racial feature. This means you can also ignore the rogue levels and only need to keep the ranger and swashbuckler within 1 level of each other.

I would go the level of ranger, two weapon fighting is good for those with sneak attack, it gives a BaB, and also good saves at first level.

Also the skill points are still pretty good, and a lot of the skills are roguey, like hide etc.

This would incure no penalty, and help you out in the fighting thing.

You do not get the TWF option until 2nd level as a ranger.

Wow, thanks a ton for all the fast replies.

Yeah, my 1 level dip into ranger, gives more HP, 2,2,0 instead of 1,1,1 saves, and allows tracking without a major hit to skill points and still gives me the +1 BAB I need.

I'm primarily built to Pick locks, disable device and search, so with my high search i figure track would be a benefit.

i'm still considering taking the rogue 6, but thanks for all the info.

Track runs on Survival, not Search–Search only gives you a +2 synergy bonus if you have five or more ranks of it.

I'd take swashbuckler 2 and later the feat daring outlaw for the hit dice, the extra sneak attack and the grace if you have any intelligence (your character :D ).
