a few days ago we had 3 new people come to our game night, they didnt have LG PCs but had some written up i didnt have a character to play apl 2 with on me, so i wrote up what i had in my head for a while which was a grey elf necromancer (who ended up beating a sea cat alone after the entire party was on the floor in 2 rounds+ surprize) but ill say this grease+ color spray could disable them (dang DM couldnt fail a save) so i just used the run and shoot and took the 5+ rounds to drop it

heres his current build

sacraficed Trans/enchantment
(necromancer)
6
16
12
20
8
8

1:Necromancer(wiz) (did not pick a feat at all)
2:Necromancer(wiz)
3:Necromancer(wiz) (feat)
4:Necromancer(wiz)
5:Necromancer(wiz) (feat)
6:Necromancer(wiz) (feat)
7:Necromancer(wiz)
8:Fatespinner
9:Fatespinner (quicken)
10:Fatespinner
11:Fatespinner
12:?
the only feats i know i want are metamagic school focus and metamagics
1: metamagic school focus
2: empower metamagic
3: still metamagic (so i can get away from grapples)
4: quicken OR twin which ever is better

im considering takeing metamagic focus for my first level feat (my selection is mostly debuffs and battle field control)

the back story is a necromancer that loves to gamble and drink, but soon found that darker magic is some of the most fun magic and decided that bringing those that deserve, pain, pain was much fun (basicaly he loves to torture people but only if they are evil) his dream is to meet the laughing rogue and learn his ways

skills
know: nature (for monster identification)
know: planes
know: arcane
spellcraft
concentration
prof: gambler
4 unused skill points

spells
grease
ray of enfeb
magic missile
color spray
obscureing mists
orb of lesser electrisity
chill touch

i was also thinking about CWI at 3rd as this character will have TU to burn on the fire (it started with 2 regionals!) and isnt my primary character although it is very fun to RP this character as he tends to hear the word "gold" and then start to act like a crusaider till he gets paid then he bad mouths his employer for being too stingy

"I WILL SAVE YOUR SON! NEVER FEAR FOR NOTHING WILL I ALLOW TO HURT YOUR BEAUTIFUL CHILD!"
(finds him brings him back)
"heres your child"
"thank you so much (hands pay)"
"(walks away) stupid stingy fools i will rule the day some day when i acheive lichdom"

Transmutation is one of the never-drop-me schools; I might have dropped Evocation, instead. You could always retrain, and really, should–you want those Transmutation spells for crafting and buffing. Necromancy is full of both blasts and save-or-dies, so dump a school that is full of those (Evocation and/or Illusion).

Seven levels of Wizard is a wash. Get some prestige class to fill the gap before Fatespinner–Wiz 6 and then Mindbender or Ruathar 1, for example. Or go up to Wizard 8 for your next bonus feat.

The best metamagic feat for a Necromancer is Split Ray. Split Ray, Split Ray, Split Ray. It's twin for only a +2–or +1, with MMSF. Split Enervation is crazy powerful, especially with a Grey Elf wizard's high DCs.

Build something like–
1 Necromancer: Retributive Spell
2 Necromancer (retrain banned schools! Evocation + Enchantment or Illusion)
3 Necromancer: Craft Wondrous
4 Necromancer
5 Necromancer: Metamagic School Focus
6 Necromancer: Split Ray
7 Necromancer
8 Necromancer: Fearsome Necromancy
9 Fatespinner: Alacritous Cogitation
10 Fatespinner
11 Fatespinner
12 Fatespinner: Empower Spell
13 Ruathar
14 Ruathar
15 Ruathar: Greater Spell Focus

You've got a lot of good options for spells of each level as a MMSF/Split Ray necromancer:
1: Ray of Enfeeblement, Grease
2: Blindness, MMSF Split Ray of Enfeeblement, False Life
3: Split Ray of Enfeeblement, Bestow Curse, Retributive Blindness, Halt Undead
4: Enervation, Fear
5: MMSF Split Enervation, Wrack
6: Split Enervation, Eyebite, Retributive Wrack
7: MMSF Split, MMSF Empowered Enervation (essentially 3d4 negative levels, no save!)

Eyebite in particular is one that you may find interesting, if you can get it up at the early stage of a fight–even against high HD foes, you can spend a move action to sicken+shaken them, and that's potetentially -4 to saves. It does eat up an action to turn on, but sometimes you'll have the spare round where you can't target anything and you can Alacritous Cog it in.

as i said retraining= easy ill have TU to burn

ill retrain to illusion and enchantment as banned as i started looking at it and missing out on fly/fly mass is not something i want but i want mirror immage o well

and i like your build but i dont like retributive spell

so maby

1: Improved int retrain at 5th to Empower spell
2: retrain to different schools possibly
3: CWI
4:
5: MMSF retrain to empower
6: (wiz unless a good PrC opens up) split ray
7: (wiz unless a good PrC opens up)
8: fate spinner
9: fate spinner quicken (i know only first level and maby 2nd)
10: fate spinner
11: fate spinner
12+ unknown

I'm not quite sure why I thought there was a bonus feat at Wiz 8, but there isn't. It's at Wiz 10. There is no reason to take Wiz 7, so do take a prestige class.

Improved Init->Empower will work just fine. You might also consider Toughness or Great Fortitude->Empower. Retributive is pretty awesome, though.

Quicken is better as a 12 thing, so you can pop Quickened third-level spells. Quickening 1sts and 2nds is often not worth it.

but what PrC (i dont have ruthgar access) and havent seen any good PrCs or even ones that give marginal benifits for low to no cost (even for a feat that is semi usefull)

also i intend to take melfs acid arrow and false life, then buy scorching ray and mirror immage(which i intend to quicken at higher levels as 1d4+3-4 immages means usualy a 1/6-7 chance i will even be hit) do i need still spell for those annoying grapples? so i can freedom of movement/dim door out and if i get access to sudden still is that or still spell just better?

i figure that at 5th level i will empower a false life, and 2 rays of enfeb
as a side note does 0 str = you cant cast spells with somatic components? since essentialy you cant move

Mage of the Arcane Order isn't a bad 2 level dip if you can get access. It takes a mostly useless feat to get in, but gives one back at 2nd level. In exchange you get Spellpool 1.

Alacritous Cogitation mostly obviates spellpool, though.

Mindbender is a great one-level dip, and access isn't hard to find. Alienist is another one of those feat-to-get-in/feat-got-out prestige classes, too, and is still good for non-summoners.

I'd say plan to take 2-3 prestige class levels after Wiz6, before you start Fatespinner. Figure out exactly what once you hit Wiz5 and retrain accordingly. There are a handful of good, low-requirement spellcaster PrCs but not really much way to tell which you'll get access to ahead of time.

It's only usable once per day though.

Yeah, but you shouldn't be getting into 'oh geez, I need something I didn't prep today' territory more than 1/day, should you?
bitznarf

07-29-07, 02:23 PM
True, but shouldn't you be able to deal with that with scrolls, and spend the feat on something useable more than once/day?

isnt there a card that does the same thing?

also i may just not take CWI and take empower spell at 3rd with MMSF
