Hi all! Noob to LG here and I’m looking for some help. This was my first LG character and the build went ALL over the place. (I play with a small group and often had to change roles to fill in for group shortcomings. I’ve only recently started going to cons.) I’m not too familiar with all the PrCs and Feats available in the splat books so was hoping to get some good ideas.

Wood Elf Fighter 6/Ranger 1
S16 D15 Con10 I14 W10 Cha10
Feats: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Wep Focus (longbow), Wep Focus (longsword), Wep Spec (longsword), Power Attack, Improved Sunder

Right now he’s been acting as a front line damage soak (using a shield and adamantine full plate to make up for his dreadfully low hp). This role has been OK, but I’m trying to get ideas for where he might be more effective in a party.

As an aside, please don’t comment on what I should have done. I’ve made several characters since this one that are much better builds (honest!). But this was my first one and I’ve grown kind of attached to him. Is he salvageable? I’m at a loss. I was looking at taking Combat Expertise at 9th level (something I should have done a while ago with his INT) and he’s got the prereqs for Combat Brute. Maybe another 2 levels of fighter and take that at 9th as well?

Any thoughts and help appreciated!

It depends on your Deity, but you're awfully close to Wildrunner and Pious Templar starting at level 10. Did you start out with a 14 Int? Trying to understand your stats - that levelling of Dex complicates things - with Adamantine Plate, you're not going to really benefit from a higher Dex and it prevents you from easily picking up Rapid Shot from Ranger 2.

*sigh* No, believe it or not, this character build actually started with…
S13 D13 Con12 I16 W10 Cha10
…before wood elf racial mods. I know. I don’t think I could have planned a more suboptimal set of stats for a wood elf. I warned you this was my first character. :) The stat bump went to STR at 4th level.

As for Deity, I honestly don’t think I ever specified one.

I think the character has some big issues looming. I'd probably consider trying to be an archer more so than a frontliner - you just don't have the hit points/damage output for high APL play. DR 3/- might work well at APL 6-8, but at APL 12, that's barely going to slow the damage down.

Something like this:
8: Ranger 2: Rapid Shot: Dex 16
9: Fighter 7: Woodland Archer
10: Fighter 8: WS: Composite Longbow
11: Ranger 3: Endurance
12: Wildrunner 1: Improved Precise Shot
13: Wildrunner 2

Depending on access after that, you could go Fighter 10, Ranger 4/Wildrunner 3(Ioun Stone for Wisdom +2 to cast Ranger spells...), etc...

The interesting thing is that you then become someone who is predominantly an archer by 9th/10th, not a particularly bad one either. You'll want to trade in that Adamantine Plate for a much more Dex/Ranger friendly armor...

The other nice advantage is that this should boost your Spot/Listen/Hide/Move Silently/Survival - with your 14 Int, you'll have the skill points to make up for the relatively low scores you currently have.

I'd move into archery full-time as well.

You have a choice to make. Take Rapid Shot with Ranger 2, and sell your armor, or wait until 9th level, take it as a general or fighter feat, and be a full-plate wearing archer.

I think you'll find that LG rewards specialization. The build you have is versatile, but less effective than either a decidcated archer or dedicated front-liner would be. Versatility is hard to use well.

It sounds like you may have to adjust based on who's at your table, especially if you live in an area with few players.
In that case, I'd keep the full plate and ALSO buy a chain shirt. At the beginning of every mod, you'll have to ask "Am I the archer this mod, or am I the front line?"

nah just get mithral full plate .. best of both worlds and as a ranger you get to sleep in it without being fatigued

Except it isn't actually light armor...

I presume you mean medium.

The DMG says mithral is treated as one category lighter for movement and other limitations.

Endurance feat allows you to sleep in medium armor.

Being fatigued by a certian category of armor seems to be a limitation of the armor and hence counts under "other limitations" and therefore Mithral Full is medium for the endurance feat.

If this has been FAQ-ed or clarified elsewhere I would like to get a reference for futeure use.

No, I mean light - Rapid Shot from Ranger 2 won't work in medium armor.

But the Ranger 2, Rapid Shot would work in a mithril breastplate, right?
I have access to mithril I haven't used... <shrug>

Yes. Mithril Breastplate is light armor, though I'd go with the Mithril Chain Shirt - assuming you get a 22 Dex, there's no real difference. Except Breastplate weighs and costs more.

yeah true .. bit of an anomalie that restriction and then the fatigue aspect endurance only helping with medium armor

I have a ton of mithral access across a lot of different characters and most of the times it was there at all the APLs. Only specific items tended to be only at the higher APLs.

I tend to see mithral access showing up at APL4, and often it'll be in the favours section as well. You can generally assume you'll have it by level six, unless you're in a very mithril-poor region. Adamantine, on the other hand, can sometimes be a bit of a crapshoot.
