| Mithreinmaethor04-29-07, 04:04 PM | OK. I have had to drastically change the direction of my character. Previously an Archer build, I now need to build into using a Bludgeoning weapon (any made from metal). Luckily I am only 2nd level so it wont be hard to build into what I need. My current configuration is: Wood Elf (S:16 D:16 C:12 I:12 W:12 C:8) 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot 2 Scout Here are two ideas that I came up with: **************************************** **************************************** ******* Fighter 4 / Scout 4 / Ranger 1 / Darkwood Stalker 6 (This works well with his home and region) 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot (At 3rd Retrain to Dodge) 2 Scout 3 Fighter - Feat: Mobility, Bonus Feat: Weapon Focus (Heavy Flail) 4 Fighter - Bonus Feat: Power Attack 5 Scout 6 Ranger - Feat: Spring Attack 7 Fighter 8 Scout - Bonus Feat: Swift Hunter 9 Fighter - Weapon Specialization (Heavy Flail), Bonus Feat: Melee Weapon Mastery (Bludgeoning) 10 Darkwood Stalker 11 Darkwood Stalker 12 Darkwood Stalker Feat: Improved Skirmish 13 Darkwood Stalker 14 Darkwood Stalker 15 Darkwood Stalker Feat: Improved Favored Enemies **************************************** **************************************** ******* Fighter 4 / Scout 4 / Ranger 1 / Holy Liberator 6 (mainly for spells but will be cool to have my celestial riding dog with Golden Barding and Spiritual Chariot cast on it at 15th) 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot (3rd Retrain to Dodge) 2 Scout 3 Fighter - Feat: Mobility, Bonus Feat: Weapon Focus (Heavy Flail) 4 Fighter - Bonus Feat: Power Attack 5 Scout 6 Ranger - Feat: Spring Attack (At 9th Retrain to Iron Will) 7 Fighter 8 Scout - Bonus Feat: Swift Hunter 9 Fighter - Feat: Weapon Specialization (Heavy Flail), Bonus Feat: Melee Weapon Mastery (Bludgeoning) 10 Holy Liberator 11 Holy Liberator 12 Holy Liberator - Feat: Spring Attack 13 Holy Liberator 14 Holy Liberator 15 Holy Liberator - Feat: Practiced Spellcaster |
| Mommy was an Orc04-29-07, 05:19 PM | OK. I played a module this weekend that has drastically changed the direction of my character. He was previously going to be an Archer build. I need to build into using a Bludgeoning weapon (any made from metal) from this start: Wood Elf (S:16 D:16 C:12 I:12 W:12 C:8) 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot 2 Scout Currently I have an Elvencraft Composite Longbow (Str+2). I may still take Precise Shot at 3rd to stay in the Archer role until probably around 6th. That must be one heck of a weapon. If you're going to go that route, I don't think it is worth it for Precise Shot. In fact, you're going to want to retrain yourself out of PBS. I really don't think you're the right race or build for this weapon - Dervish requires a slashing weapon, Two Weapon Pounce is expensive and doesn't focus solely on that weapon. No weapons that are Exotic are also qualifying for Pious Templar, a natural with your Wisdom. Master Thrower has similar issues as no throwing one-handed metal bludgeoning weapon or apparent double-weapon qualifies for either Pious Templar or EWM. |
| redgamer04-29-07, 10:04 PM | Not sure you can turn this into an optimal build be I wouldn't worry about it. Try something simple. Add in a bunch of barbarian level and focus on charge feats. Make a con amulet be your primary focus. Be a decent damage meleer with disable device and above average skills. |
| Mithreinmaethor04-29-07, 10:54 PM | Oh I know its not going to be optimal. But the 2 builds above give me some decent enough abilities and will be fun to play. Problem being is that already having 2 levels of Scout (Not a Favored Class for my Race) I have to keep it and any other non fsvored classes within 1 of each other unless I want to eat exps and gold. Here's a great idea why don't you craft an axe/ club/ sword/ or mace with range. Oh it can be done it becomes a +3 weapon with a twenty foot range. You can use all your range combat feats with it or use close combat feats when needed. Twenty feet doesn't sound like a lot. Untill you realize YOUR THROWING A FREAKIN GREAT SWORD and your within thirty feat for POINT BLANK SHOT. Oh yeah and it's a sword so you can POWER ATTACK. Here's something I just realized in theory you could aply RAPID SHOT and potentialy do 2d6+4x2*x2(*x2 on a crit)+2 at at a -2 to your attack and your strenth is high enough. |
| bitznarf04-29-07, 11:25 PM | You can't power attack when you are throwing a weapon. Power attack only applies to melee attacks, power throw applies to ranged attacks. |
| Mithreinmaethor04-30-07, 12:04 AM | Thanks for making that clarification for him. After I read his post the 2nd time I realized that. But am more interested in the 2 builds offered up. Just needing some input there. Thanks |
| bitznarf04-30-07, 01:24 AM | Thanks for making that clarification for him. After I read his post the 2nd time I realized that. But am more interested in the 2 builds offered up. Just needing some input there. Thanks The only experience I have with a spring attacking build is 2nd hand from a player who has a PC that uses a spiked chain, trips, disarms, staggering strikes, power attacks, and whirlwind attacks. Oh and rages. What he has said is that the spring attack part of the build doesn't seem to do enough damage for him. However, he doesn't have extra damage dice from skirmish. If I were you I would take a good long look at Staggering Strike in your Darkwood Stalker build, make that one hit as strong as you can get it. Note that if you hit a spontaneous caster they can no longer cast metamagic. That BDF/grapple monster/thing with lots of attacks? Only one attack from it. Then again, this advice is coming from a 'staggering strike junkie,' I just love the feat. Every build I've designed that has even a single sneak attack die has the feat in there. And tumbles around in combat. One more note, I don't know if you looked at it or not, but I don't think Improved Favored Enemies works with Ancient Foe. The ability may be similar to the Favoured Enemy ability of the ranger, but they named it something else for a reason. |
| Mithreinmaethor04-30-07, 03:15 AM | I am not sure how its handled for sure either. But this sentence from the PRC description makes me wonder how the 2 would interact. "This bonus stacks with a favored enemy bonus (if any) acquired through Ranger levels" The only experience I have with a spring attacking build is 2nd hand from a player who has a PC that uses a spiked chain, trips, disarms, staggering strikes, power attacks, and whirlwind attacks. | haferka04-30-07, 11:39 AM | Can your "weapon" be a large shield... it deals bludgeoning damage.. (just dont add a shield spike). Then you could become a Captain America wanabee.. |
| Mithreinmaethor04-30-07, 12:30 PM | Unfortunately no it can not be a shield. Can your "weapon" be a large shield... it deals bludgeoning damage.. (just dont add a shield spike). Then you could become a Captain America wanabee.. |
| bitznarf04-30-07, 12:33 PM | Why do you need those fighter levels? Can you get Weapon Spec from Pious Templar instead and still avoid a multiclass penalty? |
| Mithreinmaethor04-30-07, 01:33 PM | Yes I could go that route also. Unfortunately the vast majority of the Gods that favor Bludgeoning weapons belong to Dwarves and Gnomes and Monsters. Why do you need those fighter levels? Can you get Weapon Spec from Pious Templar instead and still avoid a multiclass penalty? |
| Mommy was an Orc04-30-07, 01:57 PM | Hmm...still not sure I really like any of the options here. A possible suggestion is the Rangerish PrC that hunts targets for her church from Complete Divine. Begins with a C. Something like Scout 4/Fighter 4/Exotic Weapon Master 1/That PrC 6. Use a Maul for Uncanny Blow. Unless the weapon does something specific with Skirmish, I'd forget you ever had that ability. You'll do an occasional extra d6 and that's great - it just isn't worth 2 feats to do an extra +3d6 of damage once per combat. |
| Mithreinmaethor04-30-07, 02:18 PM | Yeah its fun having your build blownup this early :) Of course I guess I could have been 12th level or something and had it done. Its just trying to figure out where to go with what I started with, and where it needs to go. Also where is a good resource found for the Alignments so I could figure out the steps from one alignment to the next. Hmm...still not sure I really like any of the options here. | haferka04-30-07, 04:11 PM | Complete Warrior has some cool exotic weapons.. double hammer, maul (2-h as a martial weapon)... or mancatcher.. (if you want something NOBODY else will ever use...) 2-h Exotic 20gp Dmg(M)=1d4(subdual) x2 8lb. Bludgeoning, Reach Weapon You can grapple from a distance against targets= weapon size or 1 size smaller. Which does NOT provoke. and they are NOT allowed to attack you damage you or pin you(unless they somehow have a reach weapon while inside a pin... Weapon Enhancements & Weapon Feats(Weapon Focus) add to the grapple check. I'm not sure about the actual build.. but In combat.. Initiate a grapple.. then move around the target in a circle to maintain your Scout movement bonuses |
| Mithreinmaethor04-30-07, 04:32 PM | Heh. I like your thinking. I have modified the above to builds. Just to give people something to laugh at again :) I will post them shortly. P.S Were you at Aggiecon ? Saw you were from College Station Complete Warrior has some cool exotic weapons.. double hammer, maul (2-h as a martial weapon)... or mancatcher.. Saw you were from College Station oh yeah.. Played "Zan Lee" during the interactive.. Dru5/Mnk1 "Death Cultist" Metaorg.. I was the one Casey called "BLIGHTER"... Also played a few mods with Hap.. Halfing Bbn1/Drd1/Ftr2/Rgr1/Beastmaster1 "Fellreev Druid" Metaorg.. he likes harpooning people then dragging them past all his buddies for AOs. :) |
| Mithreinmaethor04-30-07, 05:13 PM | Ok after some reconsideration here is what I have modified my previous 2 builds to. And dont laugh to hard at the 2nd one :) ****************************** Ranger 2 / Scout 4 / Darkwood Stalker 6 / Pious Templar 3 (Still works well for his home region) 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot (9th Retrain to Weapon Focus - Warhammer) 2 Scout 3 Ranger - Feat: Precise Shot (8th Retrain to Power Attack) 4 Ranger - Combat Style (Archery - Rapid Shot) 5 Scout 6 Scout - Feat: Dodge, Bonus Feat: Swift Hunter 7 Darkwood Stalker 8 Darkwood Stalker 9 Darkwood Stalker - Feat: True Believer 10 Pious Templar 11 Pious Templar 12 Pious Templar - Feat: Melee Weapon Mastery (Bludgeoning), Bonus Feat: Weapon Specialization (Warhammer) 13Darkwood Stalker 14 Darkwood Stalker 15 Darkwood Stalker - Feat: Improved Favored Enemies ****************************** Ranger 2 / Scout 4 / Holy Liberator 6 / Pious Templar 3 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot (9th Retrain to Weapon Focus - Warhammer) 2 Scout 3 Ranger - Feat: Precise Shot (8th Retrain to Power Attack) 4 Ranger - Combat Style (Archery - Rapid Shot) 5 Scout 6 Scout - Feat: Iron Will, Bonus Feat: Swift Hunter 7 Holy Liberator 8 Holy Liberator 9 Holy Liberator Feat: True Believer 10 Pious Templar 11 Pious Templar 12 Pious Templar - Feat: Melee Weapon Mastery (Bludgeoning), Bonus Feat: Weapon Specialization (Warhammer) 13 Holy Liberator 14 Holy Liberator 15 Holy Liberator Feat: Practiced Spellcaster |
| opa04-30-07, 08:39 PM | Well this is what I think I would do, but since my highest tank is only 9th level Im only going to build out to 10th for you... itll leave some room for others to pitch in.... Wood Elf (S:16 D:16 C:12 I:12 W:12 C:8) 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot, 1d6 skirmish, trapfinding 2 Scout Battle fortitude(lost when you get your mithral full plate), uncanny dodge 3 Barbarian 1 fast move, rage,Power attack (retrain point blank shot to weapon focus hv mace) 4 Barbarian 2 IMPROVED uncanny dodge 5 Fighter 1 cleave 6 Fighter 2 true believer Charmalaine, improved bullrush 7 Pious templar 1 mettle 8 Pious templar 2 smite 9 Pious templar 3 dr/1 weapon specialization Heavy mace) , three mountains 10 Pious Templar 4 (shock trooper) This build loses 1 BAB from the initial scout level but gets improved uncanny dodge and 1d6 skirmish from the dip, plus you could very well use retraining every couple levels to be the party traphandler in my opinion it is still a very capable front line build specializing in a metal weapon... |
| redgamer04-30-07, 10:05 PM | I like this one. I would put the third level of scout in there at some time. Whenever you feel your skill lagging or lvl 11 if you can wait that long. After this take ranger (favored class) and pick up the feat that lets you scirmish your favored enemy or melee weapon mastery. Is there a way to use money at high levels to get skirmish on a full attack and/or improve skirmish? If not get melee weapon mastery. 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot, 1d6 skirmish, trapfinding 2 Scout Battle fortitude(lost when you get your mithral full plate), uncanny dodge 3 Barbarian 1 fast move, rage,Power attack (retrain point blank shot to weapon focus hv mace) 4 Barbarian 2 IMPROVED uncanny dodge 5 Fighter 1 cleave 6 Fighter 2 true believer Charmalaine, improved bullrush 7 Pious templar 1 mettle 8 Pious templar 2 smite 9 Pious templar 3 dr/1 weapon specialization Heavy mace) , three mountains 10 Pious Templar 4 (shock trooper) |
| opa04-30-07, 10:53 PM | Wood Elf (S:16 D:16 C:12 I:12 W:12 C:8) 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot, 1d6 skirmish, trapfinding 2 Scout Battle fortitude(lost when you get your mithral full plate), uncanny dodge 3 Barbarian 1 fast move, rage,Power attack (retrain point blank shot to weapon focus hv mace) 4 Barbarian 2 IMPROVED uncanny dodge 5 Fighter 1 cleave 6 Fighter 2 true believer Charmalaine, improved bullrush 7 Pious templar 1 mettle 8 Pious templar 2 smite 9 Pious templar 3 dr/1 weapon specialization Heavy mace) , three mountains 10 Pious Templar 4 (shock trooper) 11 scout 3 fast move, skirmish +1 ac, trackless step 12 scout 4 extra rage, melee weapon mastery 13 scout 5 evasion, skirmish 2d6 +1 ac 14 fighter 3 15 fighter 4 improved sunder , combat brute my 9th level 16 dex mithral plate wearing pious templar would have traded 1 BAB, and a few hp for evasion in a heartbeat during RHOD, so losing 2 BAB, for improved uncanny dodge evasion and 2d6 skirmish is a good trade... good enough build noone could guess you changed your mind... all that pure tankiness and a maxxed out trapfinder would be cool plus you'd have Bul's strength or shield other protection from evil and cure light wounds or bless weapon |
| Mithreinmaethor05-01-07, 07:01 AM | Sorry guys I have sent you through this without a bit of information. There is a need for me to have the 2 favored enemies also (especially the Construct one). Also I am not sure on this yet but if its possible I will be getting the weapon as a Large weapon instead of Medium. But if I cant get it large, I will be weilding Warhammer and Shield. Plus the above builds allow me to function as an Archer until 8th level. Maybe 9th if I want to push it without precise shot. Wanna get some use from my Elvencraft Composite Longbow (Str+2) before I sell it if I ever even do sell it. Might get a +4 Str one to carry as a backup ranged/melee weapon. |
| Southernskies05-01-07, 08:07 AM | If you can post the guts of the favour without spoilers, it would make this a lot easier. |
| Mithreinmaethor05-01-07, 08:30 AM | Basically I have to craft a Bludgeoning Adamantine weapon. And it has to be used as my primary weapon (unless another weapon would be better to overcome DR etc) I cant say much more about why I need the Favored Enemy etc without giving too much away. But here is what I have settled upon: (Armor: Mithral Breastplate - This way I keep all my Scout abilities) (Shield: Buckler - So I can 2 hand the Warhammer if needed) (Weapon: My Warhammer with a Longsword as backup) (Favored Enemies - Undead ? +2 skills (+5 dmg), Constructs +4 skills (+7 dmg) (Still need an idea for a Fighter Bonus Feat at 15th level, but I do get to take advantage of Evasion and Mettle with this build) 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot (At 7th Retrain to Weapon Focus (Longsword)) 2 Scout 3 Ranger - Feat: Precise Shot (6th Retrain to Power Attack) 4 Ranger - Combat Style (Archery - Rapid Shot) 5 Scout 6 Scout - Feat: True Believer, Bonus Feat: Swift Hunter 7 Scout 8 Pious Templar 9 Pious Templar - Feat: Improved Skirmish 10 Pious Templar - Bonus Feat: Weapon Specialization (Longsword) 11 Pious Templar - Bonus Feat: Melee Weapon Mastery (Slashing) 12 Pious Templar - Feat: Improved Favored Enemy 13 Pious Templar 14 Pious Templar 15 Pious Templar - Feat: Acrobatic Strike, Bonus Feat: (Improved Critical - Longsword) If you can post the guts of the favour without spoilers, it would make this a lot easier. |
| bitznarf05-01-07, 10:46 AM | I'm still confused about why you are taking Improved Favored Enemy. It just really doesn't seem like a very good feat. I mean +3 damage vs. some stuff? Thats hardly better than Weapon Spec when we are talking a 2 handed weapon. And Weapon Spec applies to all attacks and is marginal as it is before MWM kicks in. Basically I have to craft a Bludgeoning Adamantine weapon. | Mithreinmaethor05-01-07, 04:25 PM | I have no means to take Weapon Specialization for the Warhammer. And with no means to gain Weapon Specialization I can therefore not gain Melee Weapon Mastery (Bludgeoning) either. So the +3 damage I gain against my favored enemies is replacing this for the special purpose of the weapon. I am not concerned about it not counting towards "other" stuff it is there for a specific purpose. And for roleplaying purposes I am stuck with Longsword as my weapon needed for Pious Templar. I'm still confused about why you are taking Improved Favored Enemy. It just really doesn't seem like a very good feat. I mean +3 damage vs. some stuff? Thats hardly better than Weapon Spec when we are talking a 2 handed weapon. And Weapon Spec applies to all attacks and is marginal as it is before MWM kicks in. |
| opa05-01-07, 04:39 PM | Well I have several issues with your thinking but its your character, why you would screw a build to get use out of an item as minor as that bow.. I have no idea... but to each your own... I humbly suggest if you want to be a melee fighter be a melee fighter, and if you want to be an archer be an archer.. dont try to do both well... About weapon specialization you could do F4 or PT 3...Also if you are dead set on your build Bleredd would give you pious templar warhammer weapon specialization unless I am not remembering correctly.. |
| Mithreinmaethor05-01-07, 04:56 PM | No no the bow is what I have presently, since I was building an Archer. I have now had to change the whole focus of the character because of a Favor for lack of a better term. This favor requires me to create a bludgeoning melee weapon and use it as my primary weapon. This weapon also has a special purpose which relates to my need for the extra damage vs constructs. Since this weapon I must create is rather expensive and I am such a low level, I was trying to continue down my archer path until I had the need and the means by which to purchase the item. And yes I could just as easily change my god to one that has Warhammer as a favored weapon. But for roleplaying purposes this is not feasible. Does it gimp my use of the Warhammer by not having WF, WS & MWM, sure but it is within the spirit of the character. |
| bitznarf05-01-07, 05:28 PM | I am not concerned about it not counting towards "other" stuff it is there for a specific purpose. And for roleplaying purposes I am stuck with Longsword as my weapon needed for Pious Templar. At this point color me confused. You're roleplaying a Pious Templar of X god, and as such you are taking the longsword. Okay, fine and dandy. Then why are you using a warhammer as your primary? That must be one heck of a weapon from both a role-play and a roll-play standpoint to give up 2 feats and forsake your gods favored weapon. To be honest I'm having a hard time understanding what could possibly be worth 2 feats and a marginal 3rd. And still be within the budget of a LG character. I may try to work out a build using Fighter4 and Darkwood Stalker with MWM(bludg) and Staggering Strike later today when I have my books. That XP/GP hit is going to be annoying to deal with though. But if the weapon is worth 2-3 feats, surely its worth an XP/GP hit after 5th or 6th level? Can you send me a PM with enough of the mechanics of the weapon so that I know what I am dealing with; without giving me spoilers? |
| Mithreinmaethor05-02-07, 08:29 AM | Hey thanks for all the help guys & gals. Sorry for all the confusion also. But after looking thru the books again and reading what you have all said I have this incarnation of my mess: (Armor: Mithral Breastplate - This way I keep all my Scout abilities) (Shield: Buckler - So I can 2 hand the Maul as needed) (Weapon: Maul with a Longsword as backup) (Favored Enemies - Undead ? +2 skills (+5 dmg), Constructs +4 skills (+7 dmg) 1 Scout - Feat: Point Blank Shot (At 6th retrain to Power Attack) 2 Scout 3 Scout - Feat: Precise Shot (at 5th retrain to Weapon Focus - Longsword) 4 Fighter - Bonus Feat: Exotic Weapon Proficiency - Maul 5 Fighter - Bonus Feat: Weapon Focus - Maul 6 Fgihter - Feat: True Believer 7 Fighter - Bonus Feat: Weapon Specialization - Maul 8 Exotic Weapons Master - Uncanny Blow 9 Ranger - Feat: Melee Weapon Mastery Bludgeoning 10 Scout - Bonus Feat: Swift Hunter 11 Scout 12 Ranger - Feat: Improved Favored Enemy, Combat Style - Two Weapon Combat 13 Pious Templar 14 Pious Templar 15 Pious Templar - Feat: Extra Smiting, Bonus Feat: Weapon Specialization - Longsword |
| Mommy was an Orc05-02-07, 11:34 AM | You can't take EWP: Maul with your 1st level feat... I'd really not go for Pious Templar with your build unless the WF feat for getting in is your weapon. |
