Question regarding Races and Ability Scores [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-29-06, 05:03 AM Do you add or subtract the Racial Bonus to the Ability Scores of a character created using point buy systems, before or after you allocate the points?

For example, if i create an Elf and want that character to have 14 CON, do i need to spend the extra points to get 16 CON in order to compensate for the -2 racial penalty, or can I just assume that the +2 to DEX cancels that out and go about allocating points normally.

Also, at 1st lvl, does the -2 CON penalty mean I can only have a maximum CON of 16?

11-29-06, 05:17 AM After buying is when you apply the racial mods. So if you bought an 18 con on a high elf with 16 build points, that turns into a 16 con.

The system is explained in the DMG and the LGCS. One of my preferred ways to search the LGCS is online, since the Theocracy of the Pale has it in convenient webpage format.
