As a druid 2 ranger 2 would I have an animal companion of a 3rd or 2nd level druid? I know it says ranger levels stack but do they stack even though I haven't hit 4th level in ranger?

i dont think so no, otherwise a ranger 4+ at any level could simply take 1 druid, and up his pet level by 3 (which incidentaly, beastmaster does). i could be wrong though, but id say no.

In this particular instance, you cannot count the ranger levels, because a 2nd level ranger does not have the "Animal Companion" class feature. Once your druid/ranger combo reaches at least 4 levels of ranger, then you may start adding 1/2 your ranger levels to your druid levels to get an effective druid level for determining your animal companion.

Elaborating on this, the FAQ has an example (page 18, 10/18/06 version):How does a multiclassed druid/ranger determine the
statistics for her animal companion?

Use the sum of the character's "effective druid level" for the purpose of determining animal companion statistics. A druid's effective level is her class level, while a ranger's is equal to one-half his class level.

A 5th-level druid/6th-level ranger, for example, would have an animal companion as if she were an 8th-level druid (5 plus one-half of 6).

But you can always take a beastmaster level or Natural Bond feat and go 5 druid and then fighter and go nuts riding you cheetah into battle.

Charge Range 500ft. Look on your DM's face, priceless.

Hee hee, no they won't, not if the rider has ride by attack. A sprinting cheetah has a jump check of +191, which is enough to clear any obstructions possible, and end up far, far away from your opponents after the charge. :D

Good thing 3.5 D&D doesn't have any rules for velocity damage, otherwise a lance and cheetah combo could one-hit anyone.

Of course even I (certified mounted cheese player with tunnel riding and everything) would freely smack anyone trying that. I don't mind jumping over people with horses, since a trained horse can jump almost that high anyway, and whatever they do with spells on them is because of the spells. But by the rules you could do a ride by attack with a cheetah on a guy standing on top of a 45 foot tower.

Just FYI, Natural Bond is a Limited feat, so you'd need access before you could take

Just bring enough Ride to make the DC20 check each round. :)

Hee hee, no they won't, not if the rider has ride by attack. A sprinting cheetah has a jump check of +191, which is enough to clear any obstructions possible, and end up far, far away from your opponents after the charge. :DI'm not sure where +191 comes from... Luckily, DMs encounter cheese on a regular basis, and think about such things. ;) Sprint (Ex)

Once per hour, a cheetah can move ten times its normal speed (500 feet) when it makes a charge. The cheetah can move a great distance, but by the RAW, his speed is not increased beyond 50 ft. His jump check is +11 (+4 per 10ft. increment beyond 30 ft., STr bonus of +3, and no ranks in Jump.) Therefore, his maximum vertical jump height is approximately 11 feet -- 4 feet for being treated as a Small creature, +7 feet for making a DC 28 jump check (barring circumstance bonuses, he can't make the DC 32 for the 8 foot jump). If he's a custom-built cheetah (i.e., an animal companion), then add 1 foot to the vertical height for every 4 ranks of Jump.

Ride-By Attack also places a limit on how far you can move -- double the mount's speed. So you can either move no more than 100 feet and do a Ride-By Attack, or you can charge 500 feet, ending your movement next to the bad guy -- take your pick.
