Just do a google search for it and you'll find plenty of places offering a free DL of the program.

Just to be precise, It's not a program, it's a spreadsheet...

And you don't specifically need Excel to run it, just a spreadsheet program capable of using the excel format (Open Office, for instance).

04-07-07, 10:03 PM It doesn't work with Open Office in my experience. The macros that Heroforge requires just simply don't function. I don't know what programs it does work with, other than Microsoft Excel, but it doesn't work with Open Office.

It allows you to save characters and updates them, its an excellent resource, particularly in ensuring your characters are legal.

King Kashue, what operating system are you using, and which versions of HeroForge and OpenOffice? My experience does not match yours at all, so I wonder if we're talking about the same thing. :-)

The FAQ which comes with HeroForge says it requires Windows and will only work with Excel. It specifically mentions OpenOffice as a program which will not work.

I tried HeroForge 5.0.8 with OpenOffice 2.0.4 under Linux, despite the almost certain knowledge that it wouldn't work. After waiting over a minute for the sheet to load (OpenOffice itself takes only three seconds, and I have never seen a spreadsheet that didn't load within another few seconds) I declared HeroForge useless to me. That load time is unacceptable. Still, I was curious to see if it was nonetheless as good as people say.

After ten minutes of load time, my curiosity vanished. Maybe it works perfectly once it loads, but I no longer care.

I know you're being facetious, but just to cram a sock in it: I repeated the attempt on Windows XP with the same versions of OpenOffice and HeroForge. The outcome was the same. So, it appears that my use of a substandard operating system instead of an incompetent one is not a factor.

I have Office 2000 (P3 500 with 1 gig RAM) and am using the most recent version of Heroforge. It takes me about 5 seconds to open it. Thats including the 2 seconds it takes me to remember to click Enable Macros. I save all of my characters from the options screen. Saves them as nice little .hf files.

Is it just the base document that takes so long to load. Or did you have a character that you might have saved not as I did above but as an executable ?

Opens fine for me. WinXP SP2, Open Office 2.0.3, HF 4.0.4.

I did use PCGen a lot because you could create special/unique items inside the program (HeroForge before ItemForge only let you approximate such things). AND I could edit the files to make custom feats, items or abilities. This was great for simulating favors and special effects given on ARs. Plus, there was a time that CodeMonkeyPublishing was allowed to creat the data files for WoTC books and kept mostly up to date. Now they've lost that contract and so no new WoTC books unless you code them yourself. I've done one or two. It's time consuming to say the least. Of course, my first attempt was with Epic Handbook, so I'm a bit biased against all that work.
