Gnome Niightmare Spinner Shadowcraft mage fatespinner Illusionist aint bad... Or just a Grey elf with maxed int and school specialisation with metamagic shool focus. (heighten spell is cool too) |

Metz beat me to it.... :) I think that the most popular would be: Grey Elf Specialist Wizard (Enchantment or Conjuration or Illusion) Str 6, Dex 14, Con 12, Int 20, Wis 10, Cha 10 1 Wizard, Spell Focus (Enchantment or Conjuration or Illusion) 2 Wiz 3 Wiz, Spell Focus( One of the above not picked at 1st) or Greater SF 4 Wiz, +1 Int (by this time you should have the money saved up to buy a Headband of Int) 5 Wiz, Highten Spell 6 Wizard or Arcane Prc, Spell Focus or Greater Spell Focus or Craft WI 7 Wizard or Arcane Prc 8-11, Fatespinner, +1 Int, Spell Focus or Greater Spell Focus 12 Wizard or Arcane Prc 13 Wizard or Arcane Prc 14 Wizard or Arcane Prc 15 Wizard or Arcane Prc Another option is to go Gnome, almost the same as above and add in a couple of Shadow Craft Mage prc levels. This is the option I took my character. |

If you run into things with high Will saves, suddenly Spell Focus (Enchantment) isn't a good idea, when instead you could cast more appropriate non-Enchantment spells. In my experience, it's more about matching up the right save-or-die to the right opponent than about maxing out your DCs. Something else to kick around is taking debuff spells to indirectly boost your DCs. For example, if you entangle your opponent, that's -4 to Dex, which is -2 to a followup Reflex save. Fatigue and exhaustion lower Fortitude. Shaken, that's a -2 to all saves. You get the picture. Also in purely my opinion, because metamagic rods exist, Metamagic School Focus is overrated. Oh, and take Craft Wondrous at 3rd. Elf Wizard1 and Elf Wizard3 are very strong, though. -Matt |

Good Knowledge skills help a lot here (as does memorizing the good and bad saves for each monster type). Also in purely my opinion, because metamagic rods exist, Metamagic School Focus is overrated. Metamagic rods aren't Open access, so this depends on how generous your region is with access and/or how much you travel. Back when I was picking a L9 feat for my sorcerer, I decided not to take Energy Substitution (although she wanted the effect) because the metamagic rods were cheap, and my cleric had found a few of them already... I finally found one with my sorcerer at an out-of-region battle interactive at L14. The same PC didn't find lesser rods of extend until 14th level. My currently-L8 sorcerer would buy multiple copies of a lesser rod of sculpting given the chance, but has never found access (she's the one who got access to lesser rods of extend in three consecutive modules ;) ). |
| Hariman12-19-07, 01:05 AM | To truly max your DCs I recommend a: Grey Elf Specialist Wizard, starting intelligence 19 or 20, with Spell Focus and Greater Spell Focus in at least your specialty school. Also, heed the advice of varying your spell selection. If all your SoD spells are Fort saves, then any enemy with a good fort save will laugh at you. Plus, some enemies have absurd saves in all three saves. So you'll still need some No Save Spells for them. |
| bitznarf12-19-07, 10:03 AM | Overall, of the monsters in the MM1, Fort is their strongest save. Alot of the save or die spells target fort. Next strongest is will. The second most save or suck/die spells there. Then ref is the lowest, but most of those are not 'save or die.' It's like they tried to balance things... |
| SpacePope12-19-07, 06:39 PM | Well I was looking through the feats and saw Unneurving Enchantment, it basically says that if I cast a spell in which you have to save on you then you get a -2 to AC, attack rolls and something else even if they save. The only problem I saw with this is that its Mind Effecting and not all things can be effected by those. What do yall think about it? |
| Mattastrophic12-19-07, 07:38 PM | Unsettling Enchantment; I like it in that you can use it with Distract Assailant for a swift-action debuff. But you have to specialize in Enchantment or take Spell Focus (Enchantment). Yuck. Enchantment is probably the worst school you can specialize in, due to all the save-or-lose spells being single-target or Will negates (instead of Will partial) or they only work on certain types of targets. Like I said before, just being a generalist is the way to go, doubly so if you can get Elf Wizard. There are useful spells in all the schools, and having a variety of spells is the Wizard's strength. -Matt |
