Does anybody know if there is a way to play a Shadowcaster?

Some people received access as a special reward from playing the LG special at GenCon and/or GenCon SoCal, and at least one person on the boards (_m_) gained access that way (at least I think that's how she got it). Whether access is granted in the future remains to be seen, although the shadows have certainly not left Oerth (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/lgdc/20061212a)...

well _m_ gained more than shadowcaster access there was an entire template involved and it was at an aussie con Spring Revel ... but i can say no more as apparently there is possibility this core special will become a mod and there are probably too many spoilers out there already .. people should limit discusion on this one till that is clarified

Britt can, of course, correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it, the expanded premiere of the GenCon special ends at GenCon SoCal, which is why the critical events article was posted (at the link I gave) -- Spring Revel Down Under happened to be one of the expanded premiere venues this year. The Circle has stated previously that the GenCon special is for GenCon and its expanded premieres only, and only the Origins special (if there is one) is ever considered for home-play release...

Yep, Dread Spiral is retired; the GC Special is for GC, GC SoCal, GC Europe, and the Expanded Premieres.

yes, i play a shadowcaster with a dark template. he's got a fair chunk of other levels too :D

i dont know if there are any more of us.

but this shadow plane rift (IM HOME!) in ye olde vale looks interesting.

i know a few others got access, but as far as i can tell, noone else was able to take advantage of it.

And my rogue rec'd the dark template as well -- yay! for +13 to my Hide checks with 0 ranks in the skill :incog: -- I may have to actually start taking ranks! ;)

FWIW, I thought I had seen a recent ruling that you cannot, in fact, take 20 on Hide checks, but I can't seem to find anything in the FAQ (perhaps it was a Dragon Sage Advice entry that hasn't made its way into the FAQ yet)...

(And how, pray tell, do you have a +83 on your Hide checks??? I understand +40 from being invisible, if you're not moving, but where does the other +43 come from?)

cloak of elven kind: 5
dark template: 12 or 8, cant recall
metaorg thingy gives me 6 i think, including something for being a gnome
5 from a shadow spell

Was this access one of the special items one person at the table recieved? I played Dread spiral at gen con Indy and I don't have anything that gives me access to shadowcaster or dark template.

assuming this mod is now dead and we are not worried about spoilers .. the dark template was from physically touching the pool .. i cannot recall if it was a one person effect I suspect it may have been anybody that touched it

from memory at Spring Revel in Sydney we all got the some sort of shadow access by default it was a seperate cert .. but that may have changed by the time of gencon or may memory may just be fuzzy

I can kind of clarify, and perhaps add to the shadowcasting shadows around here. ^.^

My Wiz 3 played it touched the portal. Anyone that touches it is allowed to get the cert. The cert gave you a choice of getting a +1 on one of your Fundemental's for the Shadowcaster class OR you can take the shadow template that gave you a +10 move, 10 cold resistance, +8 to Hide and +6 to move silently. However, it does suck up a level (sigh).

The second thing you have to do, to actually get access to Shadowcaster and crafting the shadowcaster equivalent of pearls of power is by reading the book of some deranged lady inside the place. Once you do, BANG, you can now immerse yourself in the darkness of Tharizdun. Congrajamalations. I seem to have done that too. *giggles*

And, to top it all off, you get access to Shadowsilk. It's a suit of leather armor that adds even more bonuses to hide and move silently. And the best part? If you're in shadows, you get NO arcane spell failure.

So now, my Grey-elf wizard Hrug Talibana Blue, IS THE DARKNESS! O.O *ducks for the magic missles* God, I'm gonna love him. He's going Nocturmancer now...duel it up with Illusion spell focus and shadow magic. You will NOT be finding him any time soon. Hehe...

indeed, alvin is nocturnmancering it up as well. you may want to look at a 1 dip into master of shadow. it eats a casting level, but damn the pet is cool :D

Ah, I figured that was it. When Nessie approached the pool (she was given the bottle to poor out), the DM asked if she touched the pool.
She may be insane but she is not stupid... besides she was tasked to poor out the liquid, not play with the pool.
She summoned a shadow though (speaking Tharzidun's name). That was an intersting effect, especially with a PC that actually has no fear at all to speak that name (or that of Vecna or personal enemy Iuz) aloud.
She did get access to shadowcaster, but is unsure if she should go for a level (don't know enough of the class).
