So, my will-be-a-Fochycan Lyracist is having some shield trouble. He's been using a Darkwood Bucker, and taking the 5% arcane failure that comes with. However, now that sublime chord is around the corner, i'm not sure that's something I want to be doing. Mithral is out, since it breaks my druid oath. Personally, I think it stinks that I'll be able to wear light metal armor, but still be banned from metal shields.

Anyway, one option would be to sell my darkwood bucker and pick up a gnome battlecape, or whatever that exotic shield is. Of course, i wouldn't get an AC bonus if i didn't take the exotic proficiency. My options seem to include:

1) Take the gnome cape, get no AC but put armor mods on it.
2) EDIT: Can't retrain improved init, since i had 0 BAB at first level.
3) Take the gnome cape, retrain to pick up Master's Touch and cast it each combat.
4) Stick with the +1 Darkwood Shield, and eat the 5% failure chance.

Anything else people can think of. Am I missing an open, nonmetallic shield with no ASF?

I'm not sure if you even can by RAW...but if you get a Wildwood buckler it would have no ASF...and provide no bonus to your AC without enhancement bonuses...overall...any of the gome battle cape options seems best.

The Darkwood Buckler is a light shield anyhow not a true buckler. Kinda silly I know.

I think there's a pretty clear cut intent there. Buckler is a game term just as much as light shield is, and Buckler's in the title. Also, the pricing is wrong.

A Darkwood Light Shield should cost 3+150+50 = 203.
A Darkwood Buckler should cost 15+150+50 = 215.

In any case, it isn't prohibited to make it from Darkwood, you just don't get the special reduction of 2 in penalty, just 1 for it being masterwork. Which is about all you want anyway.
