For reference, the footbow is an exotic weapon designed to be used from the air using your feet to brace against. Damage is 1d8 (20/x3) and if you use both hands, you add up to 1-1/2 your strength. It has a strength rating system like the composite longbow. If you use it on the ground, you must be prone and take -4 to hit. (Thanks to jstorrie, whose build from the bone bow discussion was my base.) Wood Elf Str 17 Dex 18 Con 12 Int 6 Wis 10 Cha 10 pip Strength at 4, 8, and 12 1: Ranger 1 - Point Blank, Track, favored enemy 2: Ranger 2 - Rapid Shot 3: Barbarian 1 - Precise Shot, Fast Movement, Rage 4: Fighter 1 - Weapon Proficiency: Footbow 5: Fighter 2 - Weapon Focus: Footbow 6: Ranger 3 - Endurance, Extra Rage 7: Exotic Weapon Master - Close Quarters Ranged Combat 8: Fighter 3 9: Fighter 4 - Weapon Specialization: Footbow, Ranged Weapon Mastery 10: Wildrunner 1 - Fast Movement 11: Wildrunner 2 - Primal Scream 12: Fighter 5 - Plunging Strike 13: Fighter 6 - Manyshot 14: Fighter 7 15: Fighter 8 - Woodland Archer, Reckless Rage Strength at the end is 17(start) +3(pips) +6(rage) +6(belt) +2(scream) = 34 Early on you're pretty much running around, falling down, and unloading a quiver or two. Your mid-level attacks aren't as good compared to a standard archer, but extra damage helps negate this. Make friends with the wizard. Beg a levitate or a fly. Potions of Levitate are actually pretty decent here, as the -1 to -5 and high is better than the -4 and vulnerable on the ground. Carry a shield for when you need the AC; the footbow can be used one handed if needed (but it only grants 1x strength bonus). If you time your Str belt upgrades right, you'll only have to upgrade the Strength rating on your primary bow three times, around levels 4 (+6 Str and +8 Str for when you get a bull's strength or an early belt), 12 (+10 Str), and 15 (+12 Str). I wanted to fit evasion in, but couldn't; keep an eye out for a ring; with around +21 Reflex, it'd be worth it. The will save is abysmal. Make friends with the cleric and keep a circle of protection up. Domination's never good, but it's even worse if the cleric has to get 40 ft up to cast resurgence on you. It'd probably be best if you carried a few extra potions of fly for the party, just in case. With an average of only 3-4 damage above a greatbow, I'd question whether it's worth the trouble of it all. Every combat you're either prone, begging the wizard for a spell, or burning a fortune in potions. I'm amused by the whole concept though. |
