My first gish build.

Str 14, Dex 18, Con 14, Int 14, Wis 8, Cha 6

1 Swashbuckler 1 Power Attack, Weapon Finesse
2 Wizard 1 Scribe Scroll
3 Wizard 2 Craft Wondrous Item
4 Wizard 3 (bump Con)
5 Wizard 4
6 Wizard 5 Smiting Spell (PH2), Craft Magic Arms and Armor
7 Eldritch Knight 1 Improved Toughness
8 Eldritch Knight 2 (bump Con)
9 Eldritch Knight 3 Spectral Skirmisher (PH2)
10 Eldritch Knight 4
11 Eldritch Knight 5
12 Eldritch Knight 6 Quicken Spell (bump Str)
13 Eldritch Knight 7
14 Eldritch Knight 8
15 Eldritch Knight 9 Improved Initiative

I'm planning on using the Master's Touch spell to be proficient in elven courtblade or spiked chain, using both Weapon Finesse and two-handed Power Attack.

At level 9, he'd use Greater Invis for the Spectral Skirmisher feat.

But I have this nagging feeling that there are better "gish" prestige classes than Eldritch Knight.

But I have this nagging feeling that there are better "gish" prestige classes than Eldritch Knight.

Not really. Eldritch Knight is the classic and as far as open classes go, is the best we've got overall. Most builds work in Spellsword, but yours should work fine without it.

A few notes:
You seem to have an inordinate focus on Constitution. You're not even suffering the Con loss penalty from being an Elf, you have Craft Wondrous for quicker progression on your Amulet of Health and you've already got Improved Toughness in the build. Unless you're ditching Necromancy, that's overkill. What you'll find is that your Wizard levels are going to cost you dearly on your attack rolls. You aren't talking about making this guy a tank, so bump Strength or Dexterity, not Constitution.

Get Wizard 6.

This character's Will saves are going to stink. You're starting with a negative modifier and even with Wizard 6, you're only getting +5 Will save out of Wizard before you drop back down to a poor Will save class. That's +4 Will save at level 6 or +6 if you get a +2 Cloak/Vest. Bad Will saves are generally tolerable on a full Fighter or Barbarian because they're a very focused build, but a Gish needs to have more robust defenses in my opinion.

You can't get CWI at level 3 with this build. Your caster level is insufficient. On that note, you'll want Practised Spellcaster.

Improved Initiative will be better for you early on than Power Attack.

The more I look at what you were trying to do, the more I'm thinking that you're shying away at the thought of the lower d6 and d4 HD too much. Especially if you don't close out Necromancy, you have False Life, Ray of Enfeeblement and Vampiric Touch to help you close the gap. You won't have the high HP of a pure fighter build, but you should be able to get by without them.

Check to make sure that Spectral Skirmisher is going to serve you better than Arcane Strike. I'm not familiar with Spectral Skirmisher, but I have a hard time believing it's better than Arcane Strike.

There is at least one Grey Elf gish running around out there who doesn't worry too much about HP. I believe he is currently a Fig1/Wiz5/Spellsword1/EK1 with around 100 HP with an average roll on false life. So there *are* ways to get the HP as TWG_Prometheus has been saying, if that is holding you back.

I'd probably sub out Fighter 1 for Swashbuckler 1, even if you intend to get Weapon Finesse - it makes Spellsword 1 free.

Also, an interesting option is Unseen Seer - it is a bit trickier to get into, but a Rogue 1/Fighter 1/Wizard 4/Unseen Seer 8/Spellsword 1 is also casting 7th level spells, has 1 less BAB, but does +4d6 Sneak Damage, has a lot of skill points, does trapfinding, etc...

If that looks unoptimal, yet still better than the traditional Eldritch Knight builds, there's a reason...

Level 1 is fixed, mostly. I played him in an intro mod. I can restart, if needed, and just blow off the XP and gold from the intro mod. But I like the combo of Power Attack + Weapon Finesse, and Weapon Finesse will help with touch spells later on. And Swashbuckler seems somehow elfier than Fighter.

Wizard 6 is a good call. It increases caster level and BAB, Will saves and (for what it's worth) familiar abilities.

1 Swashbuckler 1 Power Attack, Weapon Finesse
2 Wizard 1 Scribe Scroll
3 Wizard 2 Smiting Spell (PH2)
4 Wizard 3 (bump Dex)
5 Wizard 4
6 Wizard 5 Craft Wondrous Item, Craft Magic Arms and Armor
7 Wizard 6
8 Eldritch Knight 1 Improved Toughness (bump Dex)
9 Eldritch Knight 2 Arcane Strike (PH2)
10 Eldritch Knight 3
11 Eldritch Knight 4
12 Eldritch Knight 5 Quicken Spell (bump Str)
13 Eldritch Knight 6
14 Eldritch Knight 7
15 Eldritch Knight 8 (some feat TBD)

He's off 3 points of BAB from a straight fighter and he's off 2 CL from a wizard. I'd consider changing that Smiting Spell into Practiced Spellcaster, but I don't think that caster level is especially critical for most of the spells I was contemplating for his spellbook.

His spellbook turns out to be mostly Open non-PH spells, with a few PH spells purchased in scroll form or copied from other wizards.

Almost all of his level 1 spells are swift, except for Mage Armor and Shield. In fact, a good percentage of his spells are swift at every level.

I would restart the Character, for the fightery level to be fighter, (Yay Spellsword level!)

But more importantly for the stats.

A snow Elf has no negative Str OR Con. So by going not going Dex 18 you can maximise your points efficiency.

IN your build, you will end up with:

Str 15, Dex 18, Con 16, Int 14, Wis 8, Cha 6

Why Str 15? Why not Wisdom 10 for the saves? Or Int 15 so with a +2 booster you are Int 17 (Can cast lvl 7 spells, or when when denied items can cast 5th level spells)

HOWEVER you only get Con 16 at level 8. Seeing as you are going to be a wizard till about level 9 when Eldritch Knight/Arcane Strike Kicks in, then Con 16 by level 4 may be important. You end up with the same stats but get Con faster than dex. I like the Con option personally. Especially with d4 hit die.

Try Restarting for:

Str: 14 (Power attack is your friend)
Dex: 16
Con: 15 (First bump to this, rest to Dex)
Int: 15
Wis: 8
Cha:6

OR

Str: 14 (Power attack is your friend)
Dex: 16
Con: 15 (First bump to this, rest to Dex)
Int: 14
Wis: 10
Cha:6

OR

Str: 14 (Power attack is your friend)
Dex: 17 (Hope for a +1 book access)
Con: 15 (First bump to this, rest to Dex)
Int: 14
Wis: 8
Cha:6

The fighter level Is REALLY important, as it will Get you that spellsword level. And spellsword is AWESOME.

As for level progression, I would lean towards:

1 Fighter1: Weapon Finesse,
2 Wizard1: Scribe Scroll
3 Wizard2: Practiced Spellcaster
4 Wizard3:
5 Wizard4:
6 Wizard5: Smiting Spell, CWI
7 Wizard6:
8 Spellsword1: +2 Fort AND +2 Will AND +1 BAB AND -10% spell failure (Yay Mithral Chain Shirts)
9 Eldritch Knight1: Arcane Strike, Improved Toughness?
10 Eldritch Knight2:
11 Eldritch Knight3:
12 Eldritch Knight4: Quicken Spell
13 Eldritch Knight5:
14 Eldritch Knight6:
15 Eldritch Knight7: TBD

I don't think you need craft magic arms and Armour, as CWI saves you enough as it is. But thats a personal choice.

BAB is still 3 off, but you are a 15th level caster with 13 levels of actual casting, can wear a Mithral Chain Shirt without penalty, and your saves are: +14,+8,+8 (Going off my first stat choice)

Crafting a good Vest of resistance shouldn't be hard. a +3 one is surprisingly cheap.

Without Stat boosters you have 121 Hitpoints at level 15 as well. Not too Shabby for a 13th level wizard.

And you can use a Mithral Buckler, and a Mithral Chain Shirt, coupled with dex thats decent armour. (Not fantastic)

If your hear is set on Craft Magic Arms and Armour, then dump the Improved toughness imo.

And Swashbuckler seems somehow elfier than Fighter.
From an in-game standpoint there is no 'detect Swashbuckler' ability. You can define him as a swashbuckler anyway, regardless of which class you actually use. If you are looking at Swashbuckler for the skills, well, then Swashbuckler is the class for you. Fighter is better for access to Spellsword though as metz mentioned.

You didn't mention armour, and I'm assuming you're geared up for that; just remember that scrolls are prone to ASF from armour too.

After level 1, I'm thinking it's just Mage Armor, all the time. He has studded leather right now, and I don't see much need to ever buy or craft more armor unless he gets access to something with 0% ASF.

I'm actually with kjenks on this one. The Fighter level + Spellsword works fine and gets some Will save in there, but...for an Elf Wizard-Gish and especially a Gish that will be pushing their Dexterity over the +6 allowed by a Mithril Chain shirt, using Swashbuckler + Mage Armor spells works just fine. Remember that switching from Swashbuckler to Fighter is not without its own cost. Swashbuckler has 4+ skills and *Tumble* as a class skill.

For most Gish I'd recommend the Spellsword level, but for an Elf Gish and especially since the player in question favors the Swashbuckler path, skipping it for earlier Eldritch Knight progression is very reasonable in my mind. I was actually considering a High Elf Ranger/Wizard archer Gish that would be depending on Mage Armor for their defense myself. (If I didn't already have a level 8 Paladin/Sorcerer Spellsword to occupy myself with.)

I'll reiterate the Practised Spellcaster again though, kjenks. Even for only two caster levels, I can almost guarantee you'll want it when the time comes. Fortunately, you have five levels to make that decision for yourself.

I note that you're also including Improved Toughness as a Fighter bonus feat, but I'll assume that you're aware of the potential for table variation on that.

Basically its a consequence of the 'most recent book' rule. Improved Toughness originally appeared in Complete Warrior with a note that its a Fighter Bonus Feat. It then appeared in Libris Mortis without that note.

I'll check out the spells I'm considering in detail to see if any of them really depend on caster level. Most of the swift spells do not.

If the Swift spells or even the spells you'd normally have in your spells memorized were the primary issue, I wouldn't be as firm on my recommendation for Practised Spellcaster. However, as a Wizard, you'll have other considerations. Some days, you'll BE the arcane guy, and the caster level check on your Dispel Magic will be important. Other days, you'll be out dragon hunting, and having a caster level 6 Resist Energy 10 instead of a caster level 8 Resist Energy 20 is going to be un-fun.

Since you're depending on Mage Armor/Greater Mage Armor for your defense, you also have to be consider what happens when you're hit with a targeted Dispel Magic. If the caster is your level +2 and you're down 2 caster levels, you can more or less kiss every buff you've got goodbye.

If you were making a Sorcerer or a Bard and had a set-in-stone spell list, I'd feel more comfortable with someone just checking their spells known to see if they needed Practised Spellcaster. If all you've got, for instance, is Critical Strike, Blades of Flame, Swift Fly, Swift Expeditious Retreat, and Bladeweave going for you...who cares what your caster level is? A Wizard, I think, can't afford to limit themselves in such a manner. Some days you'll just want something different than what you initially planned out.

As I said before, though, you'll have ~5-6 levels to figure out how YOUR Gish works as opposed to anyone else's. That will be the real deciding factor. I know my Paladin/Sorcerer Gish has changed their plan for what spells to choose as spells known several times over my play experience, and I expect they'll continue to do so as my needs evolve.

My 12th level Gish has 102 hit points naked and can easily clear 140. This is no accident. For those of you scoring at home - a traditional Ftr 1/Wiz 6/SS 1/EK 4 build tops out at around 73 HP with natural Con 14 at level 12. Improved Toughness and a +4 Amulet of Health would bring it up to 109. Empowered False Life adds around 22 for a total of around 130. Not sure where the last 10 come from.

Snow Elf Swashbuckler Gish has a lot of flavor, but here are some comments:

Gish PrC's don't get any better than a level of Spellsword (optional, Mithril Chain is the only reason) followed by Eldritch Knight. Rage Mage would rock if the BAB and spell progression didn't suck. Maybe the new campaign cards will open up Duskblade...

Most Gish should fill the light infantry slot and are no substitute for having a full progression Wizard/Sorcerer along.

Being down spell progression, specialist wizard is the best choice. Transmuter is probably the best and Evoker, Conjurer and Necromancer are reasonable. For example, the Gish can do just fine without the Enchantment school. Abjuration is the next best choice to dump - the only real loss is Dispel Magic, and that will be at reduced level without Practiced Spellcaster.

Mage Armor is only 1 hour/level and the bookkeeping is a bit of a pain at lower levels. Recommend Chain Shirt and non-Somatic spells until caster level 4 or so. The decsion point on armor comes after Wiz 5: either Wiz 6 -> Spellsword 1 and Mithril Chain Shirt, or straight to EK 1.

The Gish is typically feat starved - dropping a feat on Weapon Finesse is questionable. On the plus side, high Dex helps with ray spells and AC.

Relying on Master's Touch for your primary melee weapon is a bit risky. Get locked in melee before it goes up, or have it dispelled and the Snow Elf is in a pickle. Many of the non-Somatic spells are also likely to be cast in harms way - Bladeweave, True Strike, Vampiric Touch, etc.

Given the number of close-in spells, have you considered Combat Casting? Now most wizards are better off with Spell Focus(Concentration) but I think the Gish is just as well with CC.

If you go with Combat Casting, consider Retributive Spell (CM) over Smiting Spell (PH2). Retributive Spell potentially saves an action in combat and is not limited to touch spells.

After some thought, I am not sure that the Power Attack / True Strke combo is worth burning a feat. With low BAB, the optimal Power Attack w/o TS is likely to be only 1-2 anyway. On the other hand, the action spent on a single True Strike might be better used on a buff like Enlarge Person, Fist of Stone, Bull's Strength, Blink, Haste or Trollshape.

One more thing - have you considered Spring Attack? With a reach weapon there is good synergy with Gish spells.

Feat Progression:
1 Fighter 1 Dodge, Mobility, Combat Casting (or EWP)
2 Wizard 1 Scribe Scroll
3 Wizard 2 Practiced Spellcaster or Smiting Spell or Retributive Spell
4 Wizard 3
5 Wizard 4
6 Wizard 5 Improved Toughness, Craft Wondrous Item
7 Eldritch Knight 1 Spring Attack
8 Eldritch Knight 2
9 Eldritch Knight 3 Arcane Strike (PH2)

You can also pull off Spring Attack with a Swashbuckler by dropping one of the optional feats.

In general, the CL is just the typical CL of the item found.

That's provided the item itself doesn't specify a caster level - such as Cloak of Resistance which is CL 5th(doesn't mean anything), but also says "creator’s caster level must be at least three times the cloak’s bonus"

So if you want to craft a Cloak of Resistance +2, you need to be caster level 6.

Two more potential paths...

If I can get access to Ruathar...

1 Swashbuckler 1 Power Attack, Weapon Finesse
2 Wizard 1 Scribe Scroll
3 Ruathar 1 Smiting Spell (PH2)
4 Ruathar 2
5 Unseen Seer 1
6 Unseen Seer 2 Practiced Spellcaster
7 Eldritch Knight 1 Improved Initiative
8 Eldritch Knight 2
9 Eldritch Knight 3 Spectral Skirmisher (PH2)
10 Eldritch Knight 4
11 Eldritch Knight 5
12 Eldritch Knight 6 Quicken Spell
13 Eldritch Knight 7
14 Eldritch Knight 8
15 Eldritch Knight 9

Or this one, with two dice of sneak attack:

1 Swashbuckler 1 Power Attack, Weapon Finesse
2 Wizard 1 Scribe Scroll
3 Wizard 2 Smiting Spell (PH2)
4 Wizard 3
5 Rogue 1
6 Unseen Seer 1 Practiced Spellcaster
7 Unseen Seer 2
8 Eldritch Knight 1 Improved Initiative
9 Eldritch Knight 2 (some feat TBD)
10 Eldritch Knight 3
11 Eldritch Knight 4
12 Eldritch Knight 5 Quicken Spell
13 Eldritch Knight 6
14 Eldritch Knight 7
15 Eldritch Knight 8 (some feat TBD)

Hey Ken,
I would love to get your take on the plusses and minuses of Smiting Spell vs Retributive Spell.

In my book it is a very close call, with the edge to Retributive Spell. Here's how it breaks down:

Smiting Spell Advantages:
1) Does not require a concentration check to cast.
2) Is effective against non-melee oponents - for example, spellcasters or ranged attackers.
3) In some cases you may have enough time to cast Smiting Spell on two weapons, or twice on the same weapon (assuming this works).

Smiting Spell Disadvantages:
1) Duration is only 1 minute, so this is effectively a pre-combat or in-combat buff. Significant opportunity cost as a different buff could have been cast in its place.
2) Only affects touch spells:
Shocking Grasp - excellent at low levels but tops out at 5d6.
Ghoul Touch - many classes of creatures are immune to paralysis, Gish DCs are not maxed out.
Vampiric Touch - the key touch spell, but without Metamagic School Focus is not available until level 8-9.
3) Spell fizzles if you miss the melee attack.
4) If the mod does not allow time for casting, the Smiting Spell slots may be wasted. (Question: can you cast a spell memorized as Smiting as a normal touch attack? For example, memorize Shocking Grasp in a 2nd level slot - can it also be cast as a standard Shocking Grasp?)

Retributive Spell Advantages:
1) Cast in advance - does not take an action.
2) Can be used with non-touch spells such as Ray of Enfeeblement and Fireburst.

Retritibite Spell Disadvantages:
<corrected>
1) Character must be hit in melee to activate Retributive Spell.
2) Normally select Retributive Spell well in advance - typically at the beginning of the day.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Smiting Spell (PH2)
Alter a spell with a range of touch to transfer its energy from your hand to a weapon that you hold. The next time you strike an opponent with that weapon, the spell discharges. The target takes the normal damage and effects of a successful attack in addition to the spell's effect. Duration: 1 minute. Cost: +1 spell level.

Retributive Spell (CM)
When you cast a spell modified by this metamagic feat, the spell has no immediate effect. Any time you are dealt damage by a melee attack during the next 24 hours (or until you next prepare or ready your spells), you can choose to cast the spell on that attacker as an immediate action. Once activated, a retributive spell disappears (it can only affect one attacker). You can apply this feat only to a spell that targets a creature. A retributive spell can target only the attacker that triggered it, even if the spell would normally allow you to target multiple creatures. You can have only one retributive spell cast at a time. Cost: +1 level.
