| boogahwoof07-15-07, 10:18 PM | Ok heres the deal. I have a 3rd level sorcerer, I was thinking of going the whole energy sub, admixture route. I am rethinking this and opne to ideas. not familiar with sorcerers, but I do know that they get nothing as far as extras as they level up, so what good prestige classes are there for a sorcerer that dont give up casting levels ? currently here are his stats and feats with retraining the feats can be changed if a idea is good enough str 10 dex 14 con 14 wis 10 int 10 cha 16 human 1st sorcerer spell focus evo meta school focus evo 2nd sorcerer 3rd sorcerer empower spell Any ideas would be greatly welcomed. I just want a fun to play maybe off the wall sorcerer with no loss of spellcasting in a prestige class if possible. I already have a higher level warmage, so i am not really looking for a big boom boom caster, hence the fact of abandoning the admixture route if nessasary. thx |

| copper_wyrmling07-15-07, 11:11 PM | metamagic with spont casters= BAAAAAD unless you get the sorc alternate class thing which lets you not up the casting time to a full round No no, metamagic with spont casters = very good :P The extra move action is not that much of a cost when compared to being able to apply metamagic on the fly, and if it really bothers you, the Rapid Metamagic feat is Open and can be taken at L9. Prestige classes for a human sorcerer that don't lose caster level: - Fatespinner (only take first four levels, easy skill requirements) - Elemental Savant (only take first four levels, feat requirement) - Divine Oracle (feat requirement, high Knowledge skill requirement) - Sacred Exorcist (high-level spell requirement, high Knowledge skill requirements) - Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil (three-feat requirement) - Archmage (difficult spell requirements, three-feat requirement) - Unseen Seer (difficult skill requirements, best with rogue / scout level) - Spellwarp Sniper (feat requirement, sneak attack requirement) - Alienist (feat requirement, high Knowledge skill requirement, not Open) - Ruathar (easy skill requirements, not Open) - Wild Mage (feat requirement, moderate skill requirements, not Open) - Mindbender (difficult skill requirements, not Open) - Mage of the Arcane Order (two-feat requirement, not Open) I think those are most of them... by "high Knowledge requirement" I mean it needs enough ranks in a Knowledge skill (other than Arcana) that you need to make it into a class skill somehow, in order to qualify at a reasonable level. The Well Read feat is one way to do that. Given your sorc's relatively low Int and the fact that it's already in play, skill prereqs will be quite tricky to meet, although retraining could help and getting ruathar access would make it much easier. The most common Open PrC is Fatespinner for a reason - as you probably know, feats are very precious for sorcerers and giving some up to enter a PrC is a significant sacrifice. |
| Franco Un-American07-15-07, 11:16 PM | Wrong. Metamagic with spontaneous casters = very, very good. It vastly opens up your spell selection, increasing your versatility and ability to deal with the unexpected. The full-round casting time is negligible, in the majority of cases. Energy Substitution (acid) is quite good for a blaster, but Energy Admixture is too expensive for it's cost. Be sure to grab sculpt spell, it makes battlefield control that much better. As for PrC's, If you can spare the feat, Divine Oracle is always good, as are Ruathar and Mage of the Arcane Order if you can find access. Also, Fatespinner is almost a given, probably topping the list due to great special abilities, no casting loss until the last level, and rediculously easy to meet prerequisites. EDIT: Ninja'd |
| control freak07-15-07, 11:18 PM | full round= very interuptable not good even on the fly its not that good thats why summoning isnt crazy good, its just good as opposed to nearing on broken(as a standard action it basicaly is) |
| bitznarf07-15-07, 11:24 PM | A full round casting time does not mean 1 round casting time. It just takes a full round action. The spell comes into effect *on the turn you start casting*. standard action < full round action < 1 round action |
| control freak07-15-07, 11:52 PM | really now.... (grins evily) thats what i thought, but i was told by 3 people who knew DnD pretty well that it wasnt how it worked but they were wrong i guess that makes my clerics conj ice beast spell great :schemes: time to drop that ice beast dire lion on you that then trys to eat you :D |
| bitznarf07-15-07, 11:59 PM | Conjure ice beast does have a 1 round casting time. So without any feats involved the creature you summon doesn't come into play until the beginning of your next turn, the same as any other summoning spell. |
| control freak07-16-07, 12:22 AM | ah ok, then never mind but still need to make sure they know that full round /= round casting time as a side note i have a question about wands not to derail the thread but if you have 2 wands CLW can you wield them both and just take the -8/-6 to touch attacks to heal your party (because thereticaly you should be able to) as well as for the OP if that is the case then i would recommend sorc :3 CWI sorc :4 sorc :5 sorc :6 empower spell sorc :7 fatespinner? : fatespinner : twin/chain metamagic twining things like ray of enfeablement is just fun, and chaining can be good but with the relization you cant chain rays you may just want twin (which i find better then quicken) emp and CWI can be swaped but its up to you |
| copper_wyrmling07-16-07, 12:44 AM | You need a feat called Dual Wand Wielder, from Complete Arcane, to activate two wands in the same round. Twinned ray of enfeeblement isn't that good, as two rays on the same target won't stack (since the ray causes a strength penalty, rather than dealing strength damage). You can use it to hit two targets at once, but Split Ray may be a better feat if you plan to use ray spells a lot. To the OP: what spells are you taking? You really need to work out your metamagic feats in conjunction with your spell selection. |
| boogahwoof07-16-07, 02:39 AM | Well I stumbled across (got access to) the feat ocular spell, its very interesting and if you have a blaster caster I seem to think it would work well. As it sits next level I'll be able to empower my 1st level spells. I was open to spell opinions as well seeing how the only archanist i have is a high level warmage. So i am not to sure on a good way to build up this sorcerer. |
| Prof. Pacali07-16-07, 09:26 AM | What spells do you know? |
| TWG_Prometheus07-17-07, 12:02 PM | What spells do you know? I agree here. We need to know what spells you already know, and the ones you are planning to select in your next few levels, unless you intend to be flexible. There is no such thing as 'just a Sorcerer'. Spell selections for Sorcerers are more like class features than they are like spells known for a Wizard. Also, what is your Charisma/saving throw DC modifier? |
