| Alpha_Nerd02-16-07, 11:50 AM | I thought up a fun build to take advantage of Sun School mixed with Horizon Walker's ability to Dim Door every 1d4 rounds so I thought I'd post it incase anyone wants to try it out. Human Ranger 1/Fighter 2/Monk 2/Horizon Walker 6/Exotic Weapon master 1/Pious Templar of Tsolandril 3 STR 15 DEX 14 CON 14 INT 14 WIS 10 CHA 8 1 Ranger: Combat Expertise, Improved Trip 2 Fighter: Exotic Weapon Proficiendy: Spiked Chain 3 Fighter: Endurance, Power Attack 4 Monk: Improved Grapple, STR +1 5 Monk: Combat Reflexes 6 Horizon Walker: Desert, Weapon Focus: Spiked Chain 7 Horizon Walker: Underground 8 Horizon Walker: Plains, STR +1 9 Horizon Walker: Hills, Sun School 10 Horizon Walker: Aquatic 11 Horizon Walker: Shifting (Planar) 12 Exotic Weapon Master: Flurry of Strikes, True Believer, STR +1 13 Pious Templar 14 Pious Templar 15 Pious Templar: Melee Weapon Mastery (Piercing) Ranger 1 is for Knowledge Geography as a class skill. You'll be wearing light armor, most likely a Mithral Breastplate. Saves aren't bad. Very good at killing casters. AC will be about the same as any other light armored fighter, but Expertise will help a bit. |

| Efekjek02-16-07, 02:57 PM | that looks like a fun build, alpha nerd. do you think i'd enjoy it? |
| Alpha_Nerd02-16-07, 03:03 PM | I definitely think you would enjoy it. Until 11th you're still an Improved Trip + Power Attack Spiked Chain beatdown, but later on you get a nice trick. Dimension Door allows for some weird tactics to be used against higher level casters. Example: If you are fighting a higher level wizard, there is a good chance he has a contigent Dimension Door incase someone tries to grapple him. You tell one of your allies to go grapple him, and you ready to Dimension Door next to him after his contingency goes off. Buddy goes up, grapples, wins, contingency goes off, your ready goes off, appear next to him, grapple him, combat over. Also, this is something I was thinking would be a good tactic, as he has a 14 INT and is most likely smart enough to pull this off. First round, move up to the caster so that he is 10 ft from you and ready to Dimension Door next to him if he casts a spell. Caster notices me get ready for something, but is unaware of what I can do, and 5 foots back to get out of reach, thinking he's beat me. He starts casting 15ft away from me, I DDoor next to him and whomp him in the face/grapple him. I was thinking about burning a boat ton of cross-class skill points into spellcraft so I can identify the spells being cast to make myself more effective in these situations aswell. For instance, if his contingency goes off and I notice he's under the affects of freedom of movement, when I pop next to him instead of grappling I'm just going to whomp the crap out of him. |
| Efekjek02-16-07, 03:10 PM | i don't think i'll do it though; it takes a long time to get to 11, and before then, it'll be way too similar to my fighter monk. speaking of which, do you think my fighter monk is covering enough bases? |
| Alpha_Nerd02-16-07, 03:14 PM | I don't know your fighter/monk's build. Sorry if I know you outside the forums, I don't recognize your screen name. |
| Efekjek02-16-07, 03:25 PM | of course i know you, you nerd! maybe it's my fault, but i assumed you would recognize my post's purposeful lack of build information, and therefore extrapolate that you already know it. you would then think of anyone who had thrown a fighter monk build at you before on the board, but realize you had never seen my screen name online. at this point, i thought it would be obvious to you that you know me in real life, and think of anyone you know in real life who plays a fighter monk, and then cross-reference that list with the people you know who have time to post during a weekday. now you know who i am? jesus |
| Alpha_Nerd02-16-07, 03:32 PM | Timmy? |
| Efekjek02-16-07, 03:39 PM | yes. hahahaha |
| Alpha_Nerd02-16-07, 03:48 PM | You should stick with your sorcerer for your second character. You don't pay attention or plan ahead enough to do any kind of prepping when you play, so it fits perfectly. DM: "Roll Initiative" Efekjek: "Wait, what's going on?" |
| Efekjek02-16-07, 03:55 PM | hahaha i guess that's true, but dude! with my sorcerer, i'm gonna need to start preparing spells. arrrrrrrgh! just some quickened spells, right? i'm thinkin of gettin empower and quicken so far. i don't know how good those are, any other feats you think he should pick up? |
| Alpha_Nerd02-16-07, 03:57 PM | When is he taking CWI? |
| Efekjek02-16-07, 04:03 PM | i don't know. i suppose that's a pretty good feat for someone who can cast so much, eh? |
| Efekjek02-16-07, 04:53 PM | i feel bad for derailing this topic, so i will add this: the dim door ability for horizon walkers is a spell-like ability, with only a verbal component. think about that. |
| Alpha_Nerd02-16-07, 04:54 PM | It lets you GTFO of Grapples :), and with a +1 caster level Ioun Stone I could take Quickened Spell-Like ability at 15th so I could 1. Make a Full attack. 2. Quicken Dimension Door to the same spot. 3. Get my Sun School attack That is unless a +1 ioun stone doesn't let me qualify for quicken spell-like ability on a 4th level spell, which is usually a caster level 16 requirement (I'll be CL 15 for this spell-like ability) |
| Efekjek02-16-07, 05:07 PM | do spell-like abilities provoke? |
| Alpha_Nerd02-16-07, 05:11 PM | Normally yeah, but not quickened ones. Also, spell-like abilities have no verbal or somatic components. |
| Efekjek02-16-07, 05:15 PM | so you can't use the ability to get out of situations where you're surrounded by eight guys with falchions? |
| Jay_Ibero_91102-16-07, 05:36 PM | so you can't use the ability to get out of situations where you're surrounded by eight guys with falchions? You can always cast defensively... |
| Japangirl02-16-07, 05:45 PM | You stole our idea! Well, you stole Chad's (the druid of grapple/AC doom) idea anyways, he was going to put it with an AMF wiz/cleric to do stupid things to NPCs. |
| clik_ml02-16-07, 10:18 PM | I wonder if Pious Templar is really necessary to cap this build. You could just take 2 more fighter levels and not have to take True Believer, getting you more feats and earlier feats. It also has the benefit of having room for 1 more level in something, perhaps another EWM level for +2 to trip or heck, a barbarian level with Extra Rages wouldn't hurt. [edit: If you want to take it even further, you can even get rid of the spiked chain and pick up a martial reach weapon (presumably a guisarme for tripping)- saving a feat in the process. It loses the chance to flurry from Exotic Weapon Master, but that's one more free level to fiddle around with if people wanted to try and take this concept and make it personal.] |

| Jay_Ibero_91102-18-07, 02:11 AM | In a similar vein, Mountebank PrC can also be used in this way, albeit far less often. For instance: Race:Human Alignment: STR-15 (6) DEX-14 (6) CON-14 (6) INT-10 (4) WIS-14 (6) CHA-8 (0) Lv1(Monk)Stunning Fist, Ability Focus, Decietful Lv2(Monk)Fiery Fist Lv3(Rogue)Ascetic Rogue Lv4(Rogue)+1 STR Lv5(Rogue) Lv6(Mountebank)Extra Stunning Lv7(Mountebank) Lv8(Mountebank)+1 STR Lv9(Mountebank)Sun School Lv10(Mountebank) Lv11(Mountebank) Lv12(Mountebank)Throat Punch, +1 STR Lv13(Mountebank) Lv14(Mountebank) Lv15(Mountebank)Feat The only main drawback of this build is the lack of extra attacks unless you go armorless. Can do a mean DC on a sneak attack stunning fist however. And throat punch could be annoying for casters. The benefit of Mountebank vs. Horizon Walker is that Mountebank's sideslip is an immediate action. And Throat Punch is more or less there for fun. Eldritch Erosion may also be worthwhile, depending on how often you encounter SR. |
