| dkay80706-25-07, 11:15 PM | So I came up with an idea based on a few assumptions and I'm looking for some critique and some suggestions on how to make it work. There are lots of ways to add damage with attacks out there and those feats/abilities are best put to use with a TWF character. I'm curious to see whether or not its possible to build a PC that can use these abilities to his advantage in order to compete with your typical reckless raging two-handed power attacker. Please note that I'm assuming access to a number of things... let's assume I will have access to Battlesmith and the Dwarven Cleric racial substitution levels from RS. Ultimately, I like the idea of stacking Weapon Spec, Hammer Specialist, Melee Weapon Mastery, One With the Hammer (Battlesmith ability that lets you add Wisdom to damage) and potentially Holy Warrior, and then taking as many attacks as possible. Besides, Dual-Weilding Warhammers is really cool! Dwarf worshipper of Moradin Domains: Strength & War All bumps go into Strength Str 15 Dex 15 Con 16 Int 8 Wis 14 Cha 6 1 - Fighter 1 - Two-Weapon Fighting, Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting* 2 - Cleric 1 - Weapon Focus (warhammer)*, Smite Giants (Racial Sub [RS])** 3 - Fighter 2 - Craft Wondrous Item, <bonus feat>* 4 - Cleric 2 5 - Cleric 3 6 - Cleric 4 - Endurance, Hammer Specialist (Racial Sub [RS])** 7 - Fighter 3 8 - Battlesmith 1 - Craft Magic Arms and Armor* 9 - Fighter 4 - Weapon Specialization (warhammer)*, Melee Weapon Mastery (bludgeoning) 10 - Cleric 5 11 - Cleric 6 12 - Cleric 7 - Holy Warrior 13 - Cleric 8 14 - Shining Hammer of Moradin 1 15 - Shining Hammer of Moradin 2 - Crushing Strike * = Bonus Feat ** = Class Ability Yes, I know my skills will suck. This is noted and accepted. It's not a skillful PC. Notes: This assumes I will have access to Holy Warrior from Complete Champion - which is VERY questionable. One MAJOR problem is that I don't have the feat slots to take Improved Two-Weapon Fighting or Greater Two-Weapon Fighting. A simpler option would be the following and solves both issues described above: ... 10 - Fighter 5 11 - Fighter 6 - Improved Two-Weapon Fighting* 12 - Random Class X - Greater Two-Weapon Fighting 13 - Random Class X 14 - Random Class X 15 - Random Class X - Crushing Strike Another option is to branch off into Pious Templar... 1 - Fighter 1 - True Believer, Two-Weapon Fighting* 2 - Cleric 1 - Weapon Focus (warhammer)*, Smite Giants (Racial Sub [RS])** 3 - Fighter 2 - Craft Wondrous Item, Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting* 4 - Cleric 2 5 - Cleric 3 6 - Cleric 4 - Endurance, Hammer Specialist (Racial Sub [RS])** 7 - Fighter 3 8 - Battlesmith 1 - Craft Magic Arms and Armor* 9 - Fighter 4 - Weapon Specialization (warhammer)*, Melee Weapon Mastery (bludgeoning) 10 - Pious Templar 1 11 - Pious Templar 2 12 - Pious Templar 3 - Retrain Weapon Specialization, Weapon Specialization (warhammer)*, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting* 13 - Pious Templar 4 - Greater Two-Weapon Fighting 14 - Shining Hammer of Moradin 1 15 - Shining Hammer of Moradin 2 - Crushing Strike Regardless of the choice made, Craft Wondrous will let me get all the items I'll need pretty quickly, like a Belt of Giant Strength and a Periapt of Wisdom, maybe even a Con Ioun Stone. Also, with Craft Arms and Armor as a bonus feat, I'll be able to lay some nifty enhancements on my gear. Last parting thought... is it worth it to go through all that trouble for the ability to fight with two weapons? Would it make more sense to go: Strength 16 Dex 12 Con 16 Int 8 Wis 15 Cha 6 And just take Power Attack and some other feats and fight with a Warhammer in two hands? Does this make the build more boring? Comments appreciated! |
| _metz_06-25-07, 11:55 PM | In both of your builds, you cannot take Craft wondrous item at 3rd. Not without Practiced Spellcaster at least. I think if you went Gendwar Angrim it would be a better option, as you can then use the Dwarven Waraxe for slightly more damage and can take uncanny blow to increase your damage a bit. (1.5 str each attack) In both builds it seems to work better. Downside is Gendwar doesn't have Strength domain. I don't see dual wielding hammering characters being that effective. you will be a sub par cleric, have an ok AC, and not be able to really damage produce. I think the Two handed version is much more viable. (A Gendwar cleric/fighter with a dip into exotic weapon master with uncanny blow Two handed power attack and Divine Power can be very nasty) Do this: 1 - Fighter 1 - Two-Weapon Fighting, Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting* 2 - Cleric 1 - Weapon Focus (warhammer)*, Smite Giants (Racial Sub [RS])** 3 - Fighter 2 - Craft Wondrous Item, <bonus feat>* Swap to: Cleric 1 - Weapon Focus (warhammer)*, Practiced Spellcaster: Cleric Fighter1: TWF* Fighter2: Oversized TWF* Craft Wondrous item That should allay that problem, and Practiced spell caster will be useful for 4 extra caster levels on all your buffs/etc. |

| GorTeX06-26-07, 01:16 AM | BattleSmith only adds your Wisdom mod to damage if you are weilding a Warhammer that you have 'made' (in LG, using Craft Arms and Armor on the warhammer counts). So, if he is set on Battlesmith, then using anything other than a warhammer is not an option. Also, the hammer specialist requires you to use a Warhammer (and worship Moradin) 1d8 is not that much worse than 1d10.. damge mod is: 1st level +2/+1 (15 str) 4th level +3/+2 (16 str)..say +1 more for a magic weapon, so +4 6th level +6/+4 (+3 str, +1 Magic, +2 Hammer specialist) 9th level +9/+7 (+3 str, +2 magic, +2 hammer spec, +2 battlesmith) 10th level +13/+11 (+3 str, +2 magic, +2 hamer spec, +2 battlesmith, +2 W.Spec (warhammer), +2 MWM) Probably somewhere in there you can add damage by making a strength belt (pushes it to +15/+13 at 10th with a +4 belt) at 12th, you've probably got a +6 belt by now, so +17/+15 (+7 str with belt, +2 magic, +2 hamer spec, +2 battlesmith, +2 W.Spec (warhammer), +2 MWM) (Plus whatever Holy Warrior does for you--I don't have CChamp and haven't seen the feat/ability) not horrible..takes a while to ramp up the damage tho. Could get a periapt of Wisdom instead of an amulet of health to add even more damage as your wisdom goes up :) |

Obviously there's a reason I'm not using Dwarven Waraxes ;) Metz - Good call about Practiced Spellcaster. I guess that's where that other feat will go. WRT not being a good cleric... I don't want to be. I'm only taking cleric levels for the free "weapon spec", the free weapon focus, and some other various abilities such as enlarge person and if Holy Warrior is attainable, the ability to use that. My cleric spells will be spent on random get-out-of-jail free spells such as lesser restoration and remove paralysis for my party. Yeah, by 12th level, I expect to be doing 1d8+20 with my main hand and 1d8+16 with my off-hand. This assumes +6 belt and +4 wisdom amulet, and a GMW +3 from someone else. If Holy Warrior were an option, then by 12th level, add another 4 damage (it's a reserve feat that adds the level of your highest war domain spell to damage). What I'd like to know is whether it's worth it to just use one warhammer in two hands. |
| Banor06-26-07, 07:58 AM | I swear the gods this night that i had a similar build coming up in my head. Was planning to try to build this today ! Battlesmith class is a very iconic Dwarven class, it's all about stout dwarf, warhammer and battle cleric. Which is why i love it :) |

Seeing as we are assuming that much, we'll agree that the hammer is a better option. If you do go the two handed hammer option, Brutal Strike is one such idea. |

Definitely a good idea but I'm not willing to take the XP hit. Also, I see Dwarves as typically Lawful.. I'm going for something a bit more iconic. |
| GorTeX06-26-07, 09:53 PM | True. You don't see many Dual Hammer Weilding PC's...go with that...could be fun. |
